To be fair late flips to Auburn and other bag schools were a thing long before NIL.

Are you really bitching about NIL in a day and age where we are greatly benefiting from it?

Lighten up Francis. Everybody knows we are elite in the NIL game. Apparently it isn’t helping our OL and DL HS recruiting. It would be nice to recruit well at those positions and just backfill portal guys when necessary. One DL this year (is Carlton an edge or DL?) when we had 4-5 at one point is an issue.

We signed an elite DL class just last year.

He played this year like he had zero desire to be playing football. He had somewhere around 100 carries and I don’t think he broke one tackle.

He played like his body has failed him, which it has. He played like he was still hurt, and I'm sure he was. But, and I like the dude a lot, it's just the way it is now. If he's still on the roster come next season, let's hope his body has finally healed. Anyone expecting him to be the older Baxter needs to recalibrate their thinking. He's at best a good blocker and pass catcher, but like @RGBIII said, and it's weird that I can now understand what he does look like while running, is he looks like he's running in jeans. In a swamp. Wearing concrete for shoes. While carrying Mo'Nique on his back.

It really sucks that an injury robbed him of a year and then this year wasn't good enough for him to pursue his dream even if it was a low rated draft pick. I don't know if he's wasting his time, obviously he's not gonna go from Texas to another CFP team - if he goes to G5 then has a good season maybe he'll get drafted?

Sucks all around cuz he's a great dude who got freak injured.

He either lost his athleticism or his willingness to move his legs like he did as a freshman. He wasn’t dynamic as a freshman, but you could see the potential once he bulked up a bit and learned to run through contact.

Hoping he gets right and makes it to the league.

I bet some P4 team is going to be willing to bring him in on the hope that another year removed from his injury gets him closer to his pre-injury potential.

Not a blue blood program, but I can see him ending up at a Big12 or ACC school before having to resort to Florida Atlantic.

It's not often you see a player come back from a knee ligament injury and operate at 100% pre-injury speed immediately. I'm hoping one more offseason gets Baxter back to near 100% and he can improve his draft stock, even if that means it happens in a jersey color other than burnt orange.

Re: Baxter, I’m curious whether we see him take his name out of the portal if the market isn’t there.

There are worse options than coming back to Texas and getting 100-150 carries as a rotational back in a “show-me” year, with the potential for more, if he’s healthy.  I just don’t see anyone paying him based on his high school ranking in 2026.

He got 54 carries this year. In what world would he come back and get 2 or 3x that amount?

IT posted some more portal/NFL notes this morning:

-Expect Tre Wisner back at this time. Simon and Clark are expected to return but not a 100% lock.

-Most likely Jaime Ffrench will be back. Aaron Butler is likely gone. "We’re interested to see how DeAndre Moore’s agent plays his hand."

-Would be surprised if Will Randle returned

-Expecting Trevor Goosby back at this time

-"Very likely" Hero Kanu will return. Watching Melvin Hills for a potential exit.

-At corner, they are watching Wardell Mack, Kobe Black, Santana Wilson and Caleb Chester

-"We believe it’s increasingly likely Jelani McDonald will return"

- Derek Williams and Johnson-Rubell are the two safeties they are monitoring

that all sounds like best case scenario thus far

Getting Goosby and McDonald back would be huge for next year. I’d like to see Kobe Black come back as well.

I’m a little surprised about Ffrench. I assumed he was the guy who folks have alluded to being out the door.

I wonder if his agent put some feelers out, got a whole lot of nothing, and decided to try to make it work.

that’s really not bad.
Black is the only one I think I’d like to see back that’s on the block. He showed something in that A&M game,

DBs will be interesting. Most guys would probably want to stay to see if the new coach gives them “a fair shake”. In the end though it will come down to money.

One in which he’s able to replicate his freshman year performance or better.  Someone is getting those carries and it’s going to be a tough sale to convince two portal backs to come to Texas in a featured role.

I’m also presuming Wisner is gone, regardless of whatever IT deigns to rumor, because I think 130 carries is about what he can expect playing for UT next year and I don’t see how that improves his draft stock.

There are some trades I would make there potentially (RBs for some of those DBs) but overall good news.

outside of the crypitc wording at CB and safety, this all sounds like great news.

You think there’s more to it than he wants more money than we’re willing to commit to him?  I think 99% of the time we’re going to see portaling being about a) NIL commitments and b) playing time.

Has not played since 10/25 but finished the year with 15 total TDs and 3 Ints. Will likely be the top portal QB barring a huge name dropping after Christmas bowls are done.

We never saw the full Baxter. He got injured very early on, then seriously injured. RB’s take two years to come back from serious knee injuries. I would not be surprised if he performs very well next year somewhere else, but Texas just can’t roll the dice again next year on him. It would be a waste of money.

He was pretty much the same as last year, which is a good college QB. He didn't really make any progress as a passer, and he's pretty limited when it comes to reading the field and making plays from the pocket. He's elite at avoiding sacks and extending plays, but his limits as a passer means he takes a lot of hits and he's pretty small.

He's not elite, but some school is going to pay him a stupid amount of money, similar to Carson Beck last year, because he's a big upgrade over what a lot of schools have. If Hugh Freeze and Auburn had been able to poach him last year, Hugh Freeze would still have a job. Other coaches will be thinking the same thing this year.

Wow, I must have misread the tealeaves on Ffrench. For some reason I was thinking that he was the one that ctj was implying that we just flat out missed on an eval last cycle.

I was not surprised by the Baxter news. He's never been the same after numerous injuries. He seemed hesitant and slow in 2025, Wisner had moments where he shined like the OSU, OU and A&M games. Baxter was all around ineffective. Wishing him the best of luck at his next stop.

I think Wisner is back and Baxter entering the portal is an indication that those carries you are talking about wont be there because Wisner is going to be eating them up.

Maybe Ffrench and Wisner actually got some decent advice. Or IT is just making shit up as they go. Can never be sure.

I don't expect Clark back, so we'll see on that one. Same for Deandre Moore.

I view Hills and Santana Wilson as locks for the portal, same as with Clark.

JJR will get more in the market than Texas prefers to pay, but they'd keep him if they could. That's the same story with Wisner.

I'll be surprised if Black isn't back.

I've seen you and others apply this logic of "well, if we're not paying much, having player X on the roster doesn't hurt anything" and that's simply false in various situations, including Baxter's. The guy wants to play. If you're playing him, you're benching someone else. The odds are highly likely at this point that the guy getting benched is better.

It's like having a mediocre employee in a critical position that everyone likes. It's easier to let that person continue to put a low ceiling on his/her area's output because shedding him/her might upset some folks and, well, maybe that person actually gets better. Nope, once you know, you know. Fire that person and go get the best candidate to replace them that you can recruit. And don't wait to have that candidate before making the seat empty, because you just might not ever actually make that seat empty.

Baxter is a year 4 player with a busted knee and a shaken confidence. If he goes to West Virginia or South Florida and has a rebirth on the field, awesome. Texas doesn't have room at the inn for rehab projects in this cycle. Up or out.
