What did Baxter and Wisner get paid last season, when it was still up in the air as to which guy would emerge as RB1?

This was Lane Kiffin during the Texas Bowl interview like 2 days ago. His GM is Billy Glasscock.

What Lane Kiffin was watching for with Blake Baker's defense in Texas Bowl

"I didn't have as much time as you think. I saw the opening kickoff with Barion (Brown) and then I had to get on the phone. Had some people calling; some agents. You know, the world we live in now.

He didn't go out there bitching about having no expectations set for players, he's a new coach at a new job bringing his GM with him setting entirely new expectations for the players starting literally when he landed with a recruit in his office.

There's a difference between doing deals, and bitching about deals and getting numbers thrown at you that are crazy.

The beautiful thing about watching someone subject themselves to the open market of a competitive workforce is that we're all going to find out there actual worth. If he gets $1M from someone, cool, hope it was all worth it for him torching his relationship with Texas on the way out. You can dispute that, but he'll be persona non grata to the alumni base and likely the AD, and he made that choice because he listened to the wrong people, set unrealistic expectations, and got his feelings hurt. Not showing up or telling the staff of his plans and then announcing he was out was a super smart move.

You keep alluding to the human side of all of this, but that is some of the fan calculus that has changed, as it should. The illusion that these guys play for a school because of some love for it's story and tradition and to get a proper education, whatever vestiges of that still existed before pay for play, it's all now gone. Little kids, non-obsessive fans, and idealists like you will still get wrapped up in the whole "but he's a great person too!" side of it, but no one should expect to find it on a fan site.

This dude is a man. Not a kid. A man in his 20's, making more money than damned near any other man his age on the fucking planet. No one gives a shit about his wittle feels getting hurt. He can go rub his numerous rope chains and then weigh them on his jewelry scale to make himself feel better. And then he can go be average somewhere else, likely disappointing any program idiotic enough to pay him RB1 P4 money. He had a great offer at Texas and he could have been a key part in a big year.

Can't agree more with the bolded. Part of this is being the messenger from knowing what actually happened and it being misinterpreted as my opinion, part of this is I have always been a bit idealistic, which you have always known. I am under no illusion that these guys give a single fuck about the program anymore (or even a lot of them in the past), there are very few guys that bleed orange before their time here or during their time here.

This is all correct. I was saying he wasn't wrong for asking for $1M as RB1, getting his feelings hurt and the breakdown after is what actually happened. Then the bolded should have/could have happened, but instead he's gonna go somewhere else and do whatever.

I shifted NIL away from Football for this reason entirely - I don't care about the TE feelings either, I care about them not doing their fucking contract and showing no interest in continuing a great thing they had going.

I agree that we should move on from the idea that current players are all great guys that love the school like we do.

However, even if you are getting paid, there is still the matter of how good of a teammate you are. Are you pushing yourself in the weight room in the offseason? Are you a locker room cancer? You have mentioned before specifically about Baxter and his issues with "injuries", from what I can tell Wisner was willing to give it his all on the field, even though he wasn't the biggest guy. I don't know what is reality, but he seemed like a good teammate.

Bottom line it is a business and production/value matter, I'm just saying I think it is understandable if a guy looks around at other players (and coaches!) who are underperforming, and says WTF I deserve more.

Just now, Gut Wagon said:

Baxter totaled over 7 figs during his total time at texas, Wisner is probably pretty close or exceeds that as well. You can do your own math on that.

We heard narratives like this for years in the cheating era. Not directly from the Texas coach but 995ers, insiders etc. That those greedy (street) agents are running a scam and poor little Texas doesn't want to participate. Make us OK with missing our top targets, because at least our money isn't going to greedy hangers on. It's because of those dishonest agent types that all the elite talent went to LSU, Alabama, Georgia or Ohio State. The guys Texas gets are much more desirable because they aren't greedy so they'll be program guys.

I'm not talking about Wisner. Im talking about preemptively making excuses for ending up with a cart full of bread.

Or we could wait to see joe it all plays out. Pretty sure it’s going to be really good, but hey, maybe it’s a shit Sandwhich to go with all the bread we are going to collect.

Singleton or Johnson, to me, would make a ton more sense than Cam Coleman (or Dallas Wilson) from both a $$ standpoint and to keep the rest of the WR room from freaking out. Bringing in a guy that has a dollar amount that signals he is here to compete and let the best man win is better for retention, much like last year with Mosely, than a huge dollar amount guy that is going to be the de facto WR1a to Wingo's 1b.

Spend the difference between these guys on an additional SEC median equivalent IOL and/or a 2nd string RB. I wouldn't even be opposed to giving the difference to Endries to keep him around to have two receiving TE threats next year.

If Arch progresses as we hope, we should need fewer truly amazing dominant WRs than an OL to give him time.

Would I like all the best players from the portal and a $50M, fuck it why not. Its not my money. Does that make any sense, not really...

Teammate talk is all coach speak. Love each other/play for each other etc. These guys hardly even know each other off the field sometimes even in the same position group.

I'm convinced texags doesn't hate UT football as much as some posters here.

Every year, when it becomes clear that our shot at a title has passed - whether that's when the clock hits 00:00 during a playoff game, or a mid-season loss to Florida - I take some solace and satisfaction in knowing how upset and miserable some of you are going to be. I don't know how some of you haven't managed to swallow a bullet yet with your incessant need to find something to be upset about in literally every conversation, quote, event, act, or breath. You people live with other humans? And they tolerate this?

That's not at all what he was doing. He apparently has no issue dealing with legit agents. It's the zero competence or perspective morons that pop into the process the he has a problem with (according to those statements).

  1. I would have expected that a decent amount of tampering has been going on for the last year culminating in these transfer portal shenanigans. I mean two years in a row we've seen people enter portal, sign with another team when it officially opens, and not visit a single school. So I would hope that we locked up 2-3 need players/positions and have done a good job of tampering them to Texas already.

  2. I would think with the expanded SEC rosters that Texas would take a collection of roster fill-in types that are just looking for a new opportunity as opposed to seeking maximum salary.

I don't see it that way. Players see what other guys are getting and they see that the squeaky wheel gets the grease so they aren't waiting patiently for fair offers. They get an agent to explore their worth and feel that if worst comes to worst that they can go back to their original team. This is happening everywhere and most teams are flush with money from the revenue sharing. And so we have the majority of starters renegotiating and many entering the portal.

Tre is exploring his options and if he gets an offer for $750K then he should probably take it. If not, I would be willing to bet that Texas despite its policy on its players entering the portal would be willing to take him back at $500K and I'ld also bet that this would hurt Tre's feelings and he would rather end up somewhere else for that same amount. After all he was already offered $750K from Texas recently. Either way, he won't be back at Texas and there will be hard feelings from Tre's end. And personally, I don't give a shit. He would be making more than NFL starters were making back in 1990 as a below average SEC back.

I’m amazed at all of the hot sports opinions in this thread. Surly - $1m is too much! How the fuck would any of you know? You don’t know the value of the players. Surly - Sark is failing in the negotiations! How the fuck would you know? We have no idea what value Texas has placed on various players. Surly - Texas is cheaping out on NIL! How the fuck would you know without understanding the whole financial picture.

The entire NIL and portal process is a business. Hard decisions have to be made. Evaluations must be made. You roll the dice based upon this and try to construct the best roster you can. Will Sark blow it again like he did with the OL? We will find out next fall. It isn’t clear yet whether major mistakes are being made in portal management or NIL this cycle.

Look, I get you’re funnin’ about and I’m not knocking you for it, but given the way some of this board has posted about him in the past I feel obligated to say it: Andre is a good young man, and one of the hardest working you’ll ever meet. He may not be a first round pick in the nfl, but it won’t be for lack of effort. The young man has incredible people in his corner, and a good head on his shoulders. On the list of things to worry about, he’s not one of them.

Now, back to the regularly scheduled rubbing of the gash.

That's great to hear, but did they remove the muscle in his left leg or not? We need answers here! I'm fine if we have Andre "Oscar Pistorious" Cojoe and he has a blade for a leg. Hell, he can even swap it out for a Bushmaster Carbine fitted with a Cobray 37mm grenade launcher, while we're at it. We'll be unstoppable!

It looks good here —

The fact that you used "when" instead of "if" here should probably tell you something.

Whether or not Tre Wisner is worth $1m to Texas is really one of life's great mysteries, up there with the identity of DB Cooper and Jack the Ripper, and what happened to Jimmy Hoffa. I guess my question for the people who are in the know on the business side of this is what is the amount of transparency that exists for players, agents, coaches, collectives, etc as to the market value of players? Is it widely known what other RB’s around the country are getting paid, such that the parties can make informed decisions about setting prices? Or is everyone just flying blind on this stuff, with only anecdotal evidence of what one or two RB’s are getting at other places? Obviously, even with a comprehensive database to establish pricing guidelines a player can overestimate his worth or a school can have a different evaluation of the player, but at least there is some basis for setting prices.

We should have a $1m player at almost every position. Sure throw out special teams but I don’t see why that’s not the standard for us so I hope it is. I don’t know the behind the scenes number but a $30m (starters)+$$10-15m (reserves) roster isn’t feasible?

Also, i don’t really get the hate for the WR room. Watched plenty of football this year and saw plenty of stars making bad plays. Do we need to be better? Yes. But unless the rankings were way off Wingo, Mosley, Lockett, mcc, ffrench, bishop, livingstone,..I’m taking that over Georgia’s crazy slow room and bama with the Ryan Williams drop. Yes they have to get better but you have to think one of those guys is going to start to win one on ones/jumpballs and we’re off and running. Otherwise, what is shipley or quan doing?

I do not want to get into this, but I do love the cognitive dissonance. Trey wants NFL money from Texas but knows he cannot get that money from the NFL by entering the draft. It is a simple valuation for a player eligible for the draft, especially at a position that most future NFL RBs are in a rush to apply for the draft. That said he may get his number from the dumbest bidder.

I think the math on first contracts is different since it's a multi year (4 years iirc?). They may be able to boost his stock enough to get into significantly more money over 4 years.

I don't think that this was a good call from him or his team. Being RB2 at Texas is better than being RB1 at pretty much anywhere else. He's not gonna be RB1 in the NFL ever and if someone tells him he's an every down guy in the NFL they are smoking crack.

Did you proof read this before posting?

Sark being critical of the agent and portal process is a good thing. There are no guardrails and it's a fucking mess. We hear these complaints from HCs of the "have not" programs, but it generally falls on deaf ears. Having the HC of Texas speak out amplifies the issue. The current situation is terrible for the sport and needs to be improved upon.

It doesn't mean he won't maximize portal additions with our inherent advantages, because unlike many people on this thread, Sark understands two things can be true at once.

1mm per is basically a 5th round contract. I do not believe he projects to a 5th round or better. I think he over-played his hand. Making the mistake that every RB1 at Texas has a minimum value. I am on team Sark on this one. I saw Hardy, Lacy, and Washington all finish in the top 5 in rushing in the SEC as transfers and I would be willing to bet none of them got 1million. RB is a position that has been devalued, and it is also a plentiful one in the portal. That does not mean Texas cannot fuck this up, but decision not to pay 1 million for Wisner does seem to be a rational one.
