Or they were just taking inflation out on the party in power.

In all seriousness, this is a great point and it really does come down to this.

Because Democrats they have detached themselves from the politics of class they were still operating under the old model that if you had full employment, the economy was good, or at least it would feel OK to most people.

But because the operating political model of the Republican Party is built on exploiting income inequality, they understood correctly that most employed people were feeling a lot of pain from inflation, that middle class people would be the most acutely aware of the problem, and they messaged their campaign accordingly.

Biden’s team realized what was happening eventually, but by the time they reacted, it was too late.

Which is indicative of how women just can’t get a fair break. Trump is unmoored to principles or a political philosophy.  He just talks out of his ass and is never held accountable for doing so.

Well, he has been impeached twice, convicted on 34 separate charges for fasifying business documents, lost a civil trial resulting in $83m in damages, lost an election as an incumbent, his family name is toxic by at least 50% of the country, etc.

I think there’s been ample accountability, rather; he had one very narrow way out of bankruptcy and possible jail time and somehow managed through it despite very, very clear character flaws.  We’ll probably all acknowledge how remarkable it was if we live through it.

Lmao at considering Trump, who is currently robbing the country as President, as having faced accountability

If he were held accountable, he wouldn't be president and might be in jail. He's paid a fine that isn't particularly hefty considering his graft income. In a largely morally bankrupt country, a massive majority of the population chose him or acquiesced by not voting at all.

The things you name do represent being held to account, but where is the other side of that notion? Consequences.

Add in that he is an enemy of the republic he seeks to destroy, and such a person should be shackled then hurled out into a cold sea via trebuchet.

As far as 2020 Dem candidates, I was so impressed with the field when I watched the early debates. Warren was my favorite, but I also loved the crew-cut guy from the Pacific NW. Booker was impressive. Tulsi was an attractive Trojan horse and, I believe, there was a well-meaning flake; they were the only ones I felt opposition to.

I was foolish to think any of them would carry a general election except for maybe Crewcut. He was manly and white and you sensed that beneath his gentle demeanor he could kick some asses. Biden proved to be what the experts around here said he could be. Even turned out to be a terrific president.

Now? The best chance would be someone who can exceed Trump in bombast.

"While you were out raping women, I was serving in Afghanistan."

"You've done many unique things, Donald. You managed to bankrupt a casino. Everybody said that couldn't be done. Did you at least grab a lot unsuspecting women by the pussy?"

"That plane the Saudis bribed you, oops, gave you is great. I'll love using it How does it compare with your close friend Jeff Epstein's? Hot and cold running teenagers?"

"We all admire your subservience to Vlad Putin. What does his dick taste like? Is it a big one?"

"Alive or dead: Harriet Tubman? Maybe the bravest American ever?"

"Do you miss Ivanka's lapdances? Touching her hips while looking at her breasts? Don't deny it, Donnie. There are pictures. Keep your eye on the TV, you'll see them."

"You're the most brazen liar that I've ever seen. Amazing, really."

Al Franken. Maybe John Stewart. David Chappelle (he'd surely lose, but the show would be spectacular), Jon Hamm might work.

Better, smarter bombast than the idiot-in-chief.

I'm sure you and other are correct and I have mixed feelings about her.

But the reality of your statement saddens me.  In that the accepted perception of 'far left' (which is also a joke in the US as always) is somehow awful and unwinnable.  As our country collapses under far right oligarchic despotic rule.

Not saying you're wrong. It is just depressing that the terms of the debate were ceded long ago, imo.

Here's gonna be my disconnect with the people who just want a "straight white male" to be the candidate. Yes, maybe it's an easier way to win the Presidency back and get Trump out of office. Maybe. But then what? The MAGA disease has already spread to every organ at this point in our country. A boring, safe, paint by numbers Presidency is not the cure. We tried that with Biden, it didn't work. We are going to need a reinvigorated Presidential administration that is extremely proactive with big and bold policies that they can push through ASAP.

Basically, go big or go home.

1980-Jimmy Carter

1984-Walter F. Mondale

1988-Michael S. Dukakis

1992-Bill Clinton

1996-Bill Clinton

2000-Al Gore

2004-John F. Kerry

2008-Barack Obama

2012-Barack Obama

2016-Hillary Clinton

2020-Joe Biden

2024-Kamala Harris

We have largely been running the "straight white male" playbook for 40 years. The only two times it worked was when the candidate was damn near a Republican. Those choices have gotten us where we are. The difference between the parties has become so barely distinguishable it allows the Republicans to use "identity politics" to differentiate between the two. No more of that shit. We need to energize the apathetic voter to come out and participate like Obama did or our politics will never change. Ever.

Democrats perform better when turnout is low now due to winning / doing a lot better with highly engaged voters.

We can’t lose those folks but we also need someone who dumb people and people who give enough of a fuck to vote yet not enough of a fuck to pay attention / be informed kind of like and stuff.

We need vibes bc people can’t be bothered enough to think or listen to what people say. They’re angry about things but don’t believe they can make a change really. That’s why maga works for them. They’re dumb like them. They’re angry, and they don’t have a strategy much like these people in their life.

Dems need to be out there pimping out mayor Pete shit that pimps his veteran status, makes him so incredibly stereotypical white middle America manly, and good but not too good of a dad. All the lefties know he’s a smart dude that qualified so we won’t lose them.

He needs to always surround himself with hot chicks, joke about maybe he’s going to be ‘converted’, shoot bazookas / use AK’s to kill hogs, and be seen taking his kids to 6 flags + Destin Florida. But he can’t cook or go on Sesame street. That’s gay gay. He needs to be been seen grilling in a backyard and and making men feel like men again. And what better person to do this than a guy who really likes dudes, bros, and guys?!

He needs to be straight gay. Passable gay. Robin Williams gay and not Nathan Layne gay. Like, make American ask the question: ‘Why are there always dudes sucking Pete’s dick?’

It's a shame Obama didn't follow through on his bold vision because he squandered so much of the party's credibility in the process.

The bases of the parties ARE different. However, when you do things like the 94 crime bill the R's come right back and remind brown people that Biden was the guy who put that together. Then you a good chunk of your minority vote in 2020 and 2024. The Republicans also throw the economy at the feet of the Dems because the cost of goods skyrocketed when you were in office. Being a centrist we did little to help on that front. The market was good, sure, but the layman doesn't pay attention to the market. Biden, being a conservative Dem, didn't show enough outrage for the little person, and that is why we are where we are. Do you think if AOC was President she wouldn't be screaming at the top of her lungs about the cost of goods? Do you think she wouldn't be trying to put pressure on entities like Kroger, who admitted to price gouging?

The people we have put in office have not been focused on the layman, and that is why we've lost them. Instead, we allowed the R's to point at minorities and blame them for the mess and get the hillbillies all riled up.

my two cents is Petey B - dude would go on anywhere and make it his show. that is the engagement needed to win. he needs win over on places like rogan, and i believe he can. assuming rogan is dumb enough to have him, which yeah

if we have elections of course, fair or otherwise

I think Americans like fat men in positions of power. It's clearly not disqualifying for Trump. JB's biggest liability will be that he's a billionaire, although it won't hurt him in a primary. If he has a bold vision that can be sloganized like "Hope and Change" or "Make America Great Again" he could be a strong contender. Obama's platform was easy to describe: get the fuck out of Iraq and universal healthcare. Trump's even easier: Mass Deportations Now. I mean even Biden to his credit came up with Build Back Better (which his own party didn't let him deliver, because of course not) which is kind of a layup idea when the entire general election campaign took place in a pandemic.

I don't think Pete has what it takes to build a brand. He's been on the political scene for over four years now and while there's a consensus that he's a smooth talker willing to go on Fox News there's very little consensus about what he stands for. You don't have that problem with Bernie, or AOC, or even Tim Walz. People know what they're about. No half-baked, hard-to-explain concepts like Kamala's "opportunity economy" thing or Warren's condescending "I've got a plan for that" refrain.

Maybe he can prove me wrong. If he's a generational candidate the people will overlook his homosexuality the way they overlooked Obama being only half-white. I just don't think Pete is a generational candidate. He's a fantastic surrogate, but he's not a leader.

Whomever runs needs to be able to talk about families and normal shit.

Trump hasn’t seen his kids in years, Biden’s only living son was a liability, Kamala’s relationship wasn’t relatable to 90% of Americans, and JD Vance wants us  to return to women just being birthing vessels even though he has a working wife.
A weird as it sounds I think that Pete is well positioned to talk to the American public about family.

Two small kids. Both parents work… or did I guess. He can talk child health care, daycare, school, anxiety, etc.

Im so tired of Republicans telling me they’re about family values. Their policies make raising kids more expensive, more difficult, less safe, and more dangerous for their health. They rabidly fight for babies not born and then leave the ones born in the cold. They fight for books to be banned but then take $ from education.

This election is about what future we want to lead and what we want to leave for future generations. Someone with grown kids or no kids doesn’t fit the tone of the time really. We need MANA from heaven. Make American Normal Again.

It doesn't take a lot of imagination to see 2028 candidate Vance using his young family as props in a race against whoever the Dems might nominate and make the middle class economic stress a huge part of his campaign (in other words, seize territory normally considered home court for Dems, very much like Trump did with promising to protect social security).

Those are losers, foreigners, and bots. Losers and foreigners existed during the Obama years, they just didn't post as much on social media. Most voters have better things to do than post hateful comments all day.

If the Dems are serious about winning, they need to nominate a strong person. Most Americans are drawn to strength, regardless of everything else. It makes them feel safe and taken care of. We think of Biden as weak because of his frail condition in 2024, the way he allowed his own party to kill BBB, and the way Netanyahu controlled him, but his public image in 2020 was very different.

I'm not really talking about physical strength or stamina or fitness. I'm talking about strength as a person, strength as a candidate. Biden's frailness was secondary to his inability to command respect, which the republicans definitely got a lot of mileage out of. Especially that debate, holy shit.

Now, JB is a strong guy, I just have a nagging fear of a Fetterman-style health episode at a very inopportune time. He's got time to throw Ozempic his weight and take some blood thinners to minimize the risk of strokes. I mean he's a billionaire he could hire the best wellness team money can buy to address the health issue.

For most people to hear about it, Dems would need to be talking about it constantly for months on end, and the media would need to be covering them talking about it. The Dems don’t understand the need for repetition and the media wants to help Trump so won’t amplify Dem messages even when they hit on a good one.

That doesn’t mean it’s hopeless. It just means Dems have to learn to repeat their attacks and to also bully media members for trying to cover up Trump’s corruption.
