Well that and the whole being escorted into the room thing. I’m sure they had no idea who he was.

You are just making shit up. Did you find that FBI statement yet?

The conversation happening here is stupid.  All the focus on what Padilla did or didn't say before getting forcibly rolled out of a news conference.  What was said yesterday that should be the focus of attention is:

"We are staying here to liberate the city from the socialists and the burdensome leadership that this governor and that this mayor have placed on this country and what they have tried to insert into the city."

The conversation that we should be having is whether a U.S. President should, with the force of the U.S. military, be able to "liberate" a city or state from the officials the populace of those cities/states have elected as their leadership?

But of course, keep the focus on what Padilla did or didn't say.

for the fucking idiots who think he barged in. This is where they were.

What would have stopped the "finding out" phase of this little episode would be not to try to push past security.   Dude went full blown, "DO YOU KNOW WHO I AM???".  A classic.

what happened to your zeal for states rights? You cool with the feds coming and liberating the city from their elected leadership and governance? Seems pretty fascist.

Yea I posted it. What am I making up? You can read what the senator said in this very thread. So I guess why are you lying?

So I'll ask @Incredulity and @Anastasis directly to answer the real question.  In light of this statement:

"We are staying here to liberate the city from the socialists and the burdensome leadership that this governor and that this mayor have placed on this country and what they have tried to insert into the city."

Should a U.S. President, with the force of the U.S. military, be able to "liberate" a city or state from the officials the populace of those cities/states have elected as their leadership?  I'm honestly interested in your reaction to that from your federal government.

completely loaded question is completely loaded.

First define, "liberate".

Then, "US military"

Broadly, outside of the National Guard in instances where it has historically been utilized, US military should not be used in actions against US citizens.

Are you asking me or Abraham Lincoln?

There are extremely few situations imo that would ever warrant the US military being deployed domestically. And certainly not to remove elected officials from office. I also don't think that we should have a standing military in its current form either though.

So given that, are you at all concerned with this statement from your federal government "We are staying here to liberate the city from the socialists and the burdensome leadership that this governor and that this mayor have placed on this country and what they have tried to insert into the city" as they send in US military forces to police said city?

Seems to be just fine for your ICE goons rounding people up right now

Failure to fully and properly identify as a US Senator, with all paperwork, stamped in triplicate and reviewed by the Office of Regime Vetting?  Performative shitheel who should be taken down by law enforcement immediately.

Failure to show any identification establishing oneself as an actual badge-carrying cop (or even showing your face) as you storm a fucking taco restaurant?  Well, that's just good government right there.  Medals all around.

Anastasis should be on everyone's ignore list. Dude is just here to agitate people and stir shit. Legit the worst kind of human in existance.

I think ana has a non controversial stance that he's being intentionally obtuse and stupid about because he's insulated from any impact for rooting for the chaos.

I think the vast majority of people would agree that:

  • U.S. citizens should have the right to peaceably protest
  • No one should be able to riot, loot, damage federal property, endanger law enforcement or otherwise engage in lawlessness under the guise of protest
  • A U.S. president should not be able to usurp authority from a state or city, send in federal troops to police them, "liberate" them from their elected officials or otherwise engage in lawlessness under the guise of law and order

The majority of folks here would agree with that?  Probably.

Would a sizable chunk of folks here rationalize their way around each and every one of those principles?   Also yes (it's treason to protest for foreigners!  January 6th was fine!  The Feds have a DUTY to remove traitor leaders from power!, shit like that).

You have to understand that a sizable plurality of Americans absolutely want an authoritarian government, and they will justify and rationalize anything and everything to support it.  Including posters here who will 1) claim that they don't, yet 2) without fail excuse/support every authoritarian act committed.

Yeah, we’ve seen how vocal many posters have been in support of brutality perpetrated by cops and civilians against protesters, with comments in favor of cracking skulls, shootings, and running over protesters in the past. It’s by no means a stretch to imagine they’re perfectly content with bringing in the military.

What if it was a 4 start general doing the same thing?  They would have to stand down.  It's equivalent.  But stay obtuse.

I just wish there was an option to ignore people who quote people on my ignore list.  There are like 20 threads in DT and CR that should be focused on news or policy or whatever that are constantly derailed by these pointless exchanges.

I went to grab a coffee at 7th & Figueroa Mall and damn a fuck ton of law enforcement out right now. A mix of Califonia Highway Patrol, LAPD, LASD, marked and unmarked cars everywhere parked on the street. Decent size group of dudes in 1/4 zips dark blue and dark green and khakis having a chat outside of the Starbucks when I walked by and noticed a few "Lt." names on the sweaters so not just patrol dudes. The mall is boarding up today also.

Side note, went to Target also to grab a chapstick and I was behind 2 LAPD latina badge baddies. I really wanted them to zip-tie and fascist the fuck out of me. God damn

Yeah, may be a lot of places.  I mean, if something bad happens in LA and there are videos all over social media, I could see escalations elsewhere.

Not to beat a dead horse, but even Corey fucking Lewandowski knew it was wrong when Senator Padilla was getting the Andor treatment. Padilla is a sitting Senator in a home state federal building who identified himself & was treated like a criminal for trying to ask a question of a federal official at a press conference.

It's as if he didn't even watch the video.

Yeah, you can call what Padilla did performative.  But the speech he interrupted was performative as hell by a Secretary who is performative as hell.

At some point, you gotta fight fire with fire.
