I told the detective that I would be happy to fly to Oakland on my dime to testify, and to tell the Dipshit that at the pre-trial.

DA:  "And when you realized that the Defendant to your right was pulling on your arm, what did you do?"

GATORUBET: "I sprayed his head with gasoline."

DA: "And as you sprayed the Defendant's head with gasoline did you say anything to him?"

GATORUBET: "Yes."

DA: "What did you say?"

GATORUBET: "I said 'I'VE GOT A LIGHTER... I WANT US TO DIE!!' "

DA: "So you threatened self-immolation?"

GATORUBET: "Yes."

DA: "And what did the Defendant do when you threatened self-immolation?"

GATORUBET: "He fled."

haha.  well, that would be fun

It’s just as likely that the honking horn - or him finally getting the bracelet un- latched to get my watch off my wrist - was the reason they ran.  Those three things happened about the same time.

I honestly think it took so long messing with me with no results that when they finally got my watch, they ran.     Anyway, the detective told me there was a 99% chance of some kind of plea deal.   After all, a jury will get to hear that a guy convicted of robbing people at gas stations is accused of robbing me at the gas station.   Since the prior conviction will come in, he will likely be toast anyway. And if they found my watch in his car, there’s no way he can walk.

The detective told me that there was close to zero chance that I’d be needed at a trial.  I already bought a brand new replacement watch for the princely sum of $135 on eBay.

Seriously, though. Glad to hear they caught one of the guys.

I’m assuming you’ll be using Uber to get around if you need to fly in for a trial 😁

Update: I received an unexpected call from a Detective from Oakland.  Someone had called in and reported my mugging and the black sedan.  They must have given a partial license, because the detective said that their crime detection cameras and license plate scanner had found the car quickly.   Using my credit card information from the gas station they found my address and phone number, and called me to ask if I was in Oakland on Monday around 11:30.   When I confirmed I was mugged around then and my watch stolen, the detective was extremely happy.   They weren’t sure if anything was taken, but the guy  they arrested had just gotten out of jail for robbing people at gas stations.   There was also a mini crime spree Saturday, Sunday and Monday, which they think mostly involved this guy at nearby gas stations.   Because of the information I gave them (watch stolen) they were now formally charging him with a felony.   I told the detective that I would be happy to fly to Oakland on my dime to testify, and to tell the Dipshit that at the pre-trial.

Given that I never made a police report, the fact Oakland detectives tracked me down and have arrested a likely suspect is pretty damn awesome. Remind me not to go crime-ing in Oakland.

oh. They got a subpoena for the car from the scan match - and found what looks to be some stolen stuff in it.  If they find my watch, they will send it to me after the case is closed.

Are you telling me Oakland PD actually does got em working in shifts?

Oakland is a completely lawless hellhole and under no circumstances should you go there for any reason whatsoever. That gas station by the airport is the most dangerous gas station in America with robberies and burglaries occurring daily.  Go to google maps and read some reviews.

The streets of homeless villages and burned out RVs are basically a mad max or escape from NY film set.  It is truly an awful place.

How can you disparage a place so replete with bean pies?

I guess that question answers itself.

But I kept my phone and credit cards and ID to get on the plane so all is good and I’m drinking a glass of wine at the airport.

Well played on not only surviving, but thriving!

My coworkers asked me what I did right after the muggers ran off….. I finished refueling my rental car and drove to Hertz.   They now think I’m mental. I mean, that’s fair, but not for that reason.

This hits close to home.  GF and I spent a few days in Napa and was told by a friend that getting in and out of the Oakland airport would save me a lot of time compared to San Fran.  He forgot to tell me that filling the rental car with gas would be taking my life in my hands.  I stopped at the same gas station as you and was just about finished when a "temporarily unhoused" individual requested I share some of my money with him.  Thankfully the GF had spent all my cash so I really didn't have anything to offer him.  If he would have asked for wine I could have set him up for the week.  I backed my way to the drivers side door never breaking eye contact, got in as GF is hammering the door lock and got out of there vowing never to fly into Oakland again.

I’ve rented from Enterprise at Oakland a few times and they’ve always warned me not to get gas near the airport. They’ve specifically told me they don’t charge if it’s a little less than full so people don’t feel the need to stop in that area.

Glad this worked out ok for you.

When the individual asked for your money, did you say, "Don't you know I've got........Nothing To Add."

I thought "I've got a lighter and I want all of us to die" was a nearly unbeatable quote, but then I got to "assuming you could get your clothes off and get erect fast enough..."

FIFY.  The ridicule might never end over that watch on the mack daddy watch thread.

I was fully aware when I posted.  But we need to keep that Surly post count up, and them teeing off on that should cause an increase.

Murdered by a 'Rolex ripper' outside famous restaurant in broad daylight: Masked mugger fatally stabs man who 'tried to fight back' outside five-star hotel in Knightsbridge

A masked mugger attempted to snatch a pedestrian's gold watch before stabbing him to death in front of his partner outside a high-end London casino when he fought back, witnesses told MailOnline today.

The murder victim, 24, died in broad daylight outside the £1,650-a-night 5-star Park Tower Hotel and Casino, which is directly across the road from the Harvey Nichols department store in Knightsbridge.

The stabbing took place at around 9.30pm last night in Seville Street, which is also close to Harrods, a host of luxury stores and Hyde Park.  The Park Tower Hotel and Casino is also next door to Nusr-Et, the steakhouse run by celebrity chef Salt Bae.

Police are hunting for the killer but have not made any arrests.

Witnesses believe the tragedy was related to an attempted watch theft and the murder came hours after London Mayor Sir Sadiq Khan promised a police blitz on crime in the capital, including knife crime.

A worker at a luxury hotel near the murder scene said: 'I was working there last night. My secretary told me a masked man tried to rob his watch. It was a couple. But the guy pulled out his hand and he took out his knife and stabbed him.

'The couple were walking along the pavement and he tried to fight back but the guy took the knife and stabbed him in the chest.

'The police chased the guy but I don't think they caught him. I saw a little bit of the CCTV. I saw the man lying out on the pavement, a woman was supporting him and crying. There was a lot of blood. He was wearing a white or cream coloured t-shirt. He was unconscious. '

The worker said they believed the attacker was on an e-scooter but an American tourist said they thought the killer was on a bike and that they had been warned by friends not to wear any expensive jewellery while walking in London.
