In the second half, Texas outscored the Cowboys 42-0.

That was one of three games in a row - actually I think it was three out of four - in which Okie State kicked our asses pretty significantly in the first half, and we outscored them 108 to nothing in the second half.

Nebraska by year and coach- maybe I'm wrong but this is my bet for pretty similar for how Bama plays out. The fact that Helo can't see it makes me even more confident it's going down like this.

Tom Osborne era

  • 1994 – 13–0 – Osborne (National Champions)

  • 1995 – 12–0 – Osborne (National Champions)

  • 1996 – 11–2 – Osborne

  • 1997 – 13–0 – Osborne (National Champions, split title w/ Michigan)

Frank Solich era

  • 1998 – 9–4 – Solich

  • 1999 – 12–1 – Solich (Big 12 Champions)

  • 2000 – 10–2 – Solich

  • 2001 – 11–2 – Solich (BCS Title Game appearance, lost to Miami)

  • 2002 – 7–7 – Solich

  • 2003 – 9–3 (regular season) – Solich fired after regular season; Bo Pelini served as interim coach and won the Alamo Bowl → final record 10–3

Bill Callahan era

  • 2004 – 5–6 – Callahan

  • 2005 – 8–4 – Callahan

  • 2006 – 9–5 – Callahan (lost Big 12 Title Game to Oklahoma)

  • 2007 – 5–7 – Callahan (fired after season)

Bo Pelini era

  • 2008 – 9–4 – Pelini

  • 2009 – 10–4 – Pelini (lost Big 12 Title Game to Texas)

  • 2010 – 10–4 – Pelini (lost Big 12 Title Game to Oklahoma)

Also keep in mind the SEC is a lot tougher than the big 12 North was during that time period. so, Bama could be better than Nebraska was and still putting up those kind of 8, 9, 10 win teams, pissing off their fans, and sprinkling in the occasional stinker of a year.

Conoco and Phillips are Oklahoma home grown oil companies started in the late 1800's. Jed Clampett sold his fortune to Mr. Brewster in Tulsa, the 'Oil Capital of the World." Oklahoma is similar to Texas in that there are multiple producing formations, stacked like pancakes. There are no dry holes in Oklahoma; the only question is how much produced water you have to get rid of. West Texas Intermediate looks like the oil after a 2 year oil change. The Oklahoma Sweet oil produced around Ponca City, Conoco's home, is a golden-greenish-yellow color, and looks Quaker State 10W-40 that comes out of a can. It's the second most popular thing to come out of Ponca City, Oklahoma; Candy Loving being the first.

The smaller independent oil companies are the meat in potatoes in Oklahoma oil & gas production, many of which have had their fortunes since well before I moved there in the late 70's. Yes, there are plenty of trailer parks, just like any other place. But there is also an underlying wealth that is for them to know, and for you to find out about.

Harold Hamm was the youngest of 13 kids born to a share cropper, didn't go to college, and started his own company at 21. He is worth ~ $18.5 Billion.

Yeah, Harold didn't go to college, but I bet his kids did.

Make no mistake, there is a lot of money up there.

Guess all their wealth just hates supporting OU football.

Good thing the Pioneer Woman's husband who's worth 100 million went to Arizona State. Wonder if he's supporting Dillingham and their NIL.

I'm three months late, but had to chime in to rep what might be the most unexpected stray ever caught on the internet. Fatty Arbuckle?! Fucking savage, bro. Poor guy was acquitted, too.

Also jumped in to comment on what I heard on Todd McShay's show today. I know next to nothing about 2025 OU and saw he was previewing them, so listened out of curiousity. And wow, was I not expecting the wet, gushing tongue fucking McShay gave Venables.

When he wasn't glowingly recounting some male bonding experience with Venables (something about almost getting bowled over by him on the field after a Clemson win), McShay propagandized this roster as if they are the best team in the country. Per McShay's sources aka his buddies on the staff,  Mateer is bigger, stronger Baker Mayfield and 10 times better than they expected him to be. Then he said something along the lines of: "OU has the best Dline in the SEC, but the DB room is actually the best on the team."

I'd be lying if I said it didn't make me a bit nervous. Really hope McShay is loud wrong and has to eat shit on this take.

There's still time to delete this. There may be a few people that haven't read it yet.

Firing Pelini was so dumb.  Also not sure why you stopped at 2010, he went 9-4, 10-4, 9-4, 9-3 until he was fired.

So they fired a coach who won double digit games three times and 9 games every other year, but they've only won 9 games once since they fired Pelini

A few team notes from IT

  Hide contents

How good can the offense be this season?

IT posed this question to a couple of sources, and they were mostly in agreement. The answer: better than last year, and it should be dominant against an average defense. That said, they also believe it could take a few games for the offense to gel.

One source noted, “New quarterback and wide receivers, the running backs are coming back from injury, and the O-line doesn’t have nearly as much time together as last year. But it isn’t a big drop-off, they just need time together.”

While the offense may need some time to cohere, another source added, “This year’s offense will ultimately be more consistent. Isaiah Bond and DeAndre Moore had their ups and downs (you could throw Ryan Wingo in there, too). They were limited at running back. Quarterback… Arch will be more consistent.”

And in encouraging news: “In the last week the offense has really picked up.” By that, the source meant there were far fewer mental errors, fewer penalties, and improved cohesion.

How dangerous is Arch with his legs?

“He’s more dangerous than Colt McCoy was. He doesn’t have the speed of VY, but he’s more than willing to put his body on the line. He’s a gritty dude. He’s not real fast, but he’s fast enough. I don’t want to say he’s Josh Allen, but he has the size, grit, and will take off to make something happen.”

Will the defense be better, and if so, why?

Both sources believe the defense will be better. One cited last year’s breakthrough and noted the unit was mostly dominant, though they did catch a break with the quarterbacks they faced. Still, expectations are incredibly high, and the defense returns plenty of carryover from last season.

The other source pointed to improvement at linebacker and edge while noting that the defensive tackles should be just as good as last year. “Anthony Hill is better in coverage. Liona Lefau is better against the run. There’s more diversity on defense. You have Ethan Burke playing DT and Edge depending on the package. That’s just one example, but there are a lot.”

What about the loss of Andrew Mukuba’s ball skills?

IT asked if Derek Williams could approximate Mukuba’s ball production. The response: “Williams isn’t like that. The guy you’re looking for is Jelani McDonald.”

If Mukuba was a 10/10 on the Mukuba scale, how would McDonald rate? “8 or 9.” That might be good enough.

Star is a point of contention among fans and one notable analyst

So far, it’s essentially been a mix of Jelani McDonald and Graceson Littleton, depending on the offensive personnel on the field.

One source noted, “I’ll just say the coaches trust Littleton a lot.”

Saturday’s mock game

The mock game is designed to make sure the entire team is on the same page when it comes to substitutions, personnel package swaps, transitioning to special teams, and more. It’s fast-paced with players shuffling in and out quickly, but they aren’t running plays or hitting.

That's really interesting since Williams was the starter until he went down with injury. The real question is will he be back to his pre-injury ability, and how soon.

Sort of.

There's a weird in state hatred of Texas in Colorado that stems from the fact so many Texans own so much of the land in their state. Honestly, Colorado football fans are a strange breed. The administration there goes hot and cold regarding giving the football program support and then pulling the rug out from under them, so the fans end up on an unpleasant teeter totter as to whether the team is going to be good or not. I don't believe Colorado fans think about Texas all that much.

Missouri doesn't think of Texas much at all. They have the KU thing going on, and they're too busy feeling rejected by all the SEC schools who don't even think they bring anything to the conference and wish they'd be kicked out.

Nebraska fans hate Texas with every fiber of their being. It's akin to Arkansas hate. It's not just about the record. It's this mythology they've created that UT is responsible for their program's demise. That's existential shit. Nebraska is one of those states that to be from there, even 2nd generation, means you're a Cornhusker football fan. It doesn't matter if you went to school there. It's like Constantine making everyone in the Roman Empire convert to Christianity. You're a Cornhusker football fan even if you don't follow football.

They'll cite different factors. Lack of population in the state. The increase in difficulty in recruiting out of state. The move to the Big 10. But given our human propensity to blame someone else for our own problems, the chief place they like to put the blame for their decline is on Texas. We came into the conference and ruined their ability to place dumb college football players on the academic rolls for a year, even though it was an 11-1 vote. The officials were bribed to let Texas win the Big 12 championship game in 2009. If they win that, they're allegedly still a prominent program. We formed the Longhorn Network which forced them to go elsewhere for conference membership, rather than sharing revenue equally. Never mind in every vote regarding revenue sharing they voted with Texas, because they were making a killing on selling pay per view for Tier III rights to the Nebraska faithful, but the amount the Big 10 was able to offer was going to dwarf any combination of revenue they'd receive from the Big 12. They still act as if their departure was UT's fault.

It doesn't matter that we haven't played them since they left the Big 12. That shit is handed down from generation to generation, just like Arkansas. Every little dirt farmer is tucked into bed with stories of the boogeyman, the Texas Longhorns, who ruined the Nebraska football program. It's accepted as fact up there. I won't go into all the dynamics in volleyball, because it will bore everyone to tears, and I've already lost a lot of people with my usual wall of text. But for the few of us on here that passionately follow that sport, the Nebraska hatred for us is immense (in volleyball I'd say it goes both ways equally in ways it does not in football, but that's neither here nor there).

And citing A&M's hate as having anything to do with 11-5, 5-3 in College Station, is an almost criminal misrepresentation. That's an institutional hate that goes way beyond football. As much as their brainwashing fish camp, their roots as an all male compulsory ROTC military college, the jizz jar bonfire pre tragedy, and all their other cult behavior, it's their shared hatred for Texas that bonds Aggies. That's not true to the same extent even for OU fans. We diminish their complete and utter obsession with us to  say it has anything to do with their record against us.

I don't disagree with any of your post.

I only included aggy as 1 of the 4 that left the B12, blaming Texas for everything as they slithered out the door.

I lived in Colorado for 3 years, when they were good. Too bad Rick Neuheisel fucked that up. He had a monster going.

I bought some new Python Boots before I moved up there in the 90's. I knew what they thought about Texan's, and I didn't want to disappoint them.

I was talking to a colleague one day, and he said something like, "You damn Texan's are all alike! Texas this, and Texas that! Why are you guys like that? Do they teach you that shit?"

"As a matter of fact, they do. Texas History in 7th Grade.

"Oh..." he replied, somewhat. surprised. "I have to be honest ... I'm jealous. Every person I've ever met from Texas is like that. I just wish I was from a place like that, where everybody had that much pride.

How should Texas deal with Jeremiah Smith in rematch with Ohio State?

AUSTIN, Texas — There was a method to Steve Sarkisian’s madness when the Texas coach embarked on a mission to challenge Malik Muhammad ahead of the team’s second camp scrimmage.

“I purposely went after him with a couple of different things,” Sarkisian said after the scrimmage. “For him to play the way that he played gave me more confidence than I've had, and I have a lot in him. Today was very, very encouraging on that front.”

Muhammad, a veteran cornerback with 18 starts in 30 career games, will begin the 2025 season with arguably the toughest assignment he’ll face as a junior whenever he has to cover Ohio State’s Jeremiah Smith. Smith was limited to one reception for three yards on Jan. 10, when the Buckeyes’ 28-14 triumph in the Cotton Bowl ended the Longhorns’ season one game shy of the College Football Playoff National Championship.

“It was a team effort,” Muhammad said earlier in camp about what it took for Texas to hold Smith to his lowest statistical output and his lowest single-game grade from Pro Football Focus during his remarkable true freshman season.

The Longhorns had Smith’s number in Arlington. Still, Sarkisian, who didn’t mention Smith or any other Ohio State wide receivers by name while detailing what Muhammad went through last week, knows coach Ryan Day and offensive coordinator Brian Hartline will be looking to get the 6-foot-3-inch, 223-pound Smith (76 receptions 1,315 yards and 15 touchdowns, which established new freshman records for a Buckeye) involved early and often.

The occasions when Muhammad finds himself one-on-one with Smith should be few and far between.

That’s not a knock on the 6-foot, 188-pound Muhammad, who Pro Football Focus touts as the sixth-best returning cornerback in the country. Texas should do whatever it takes to limit the times Smith faces man coverage because he destroyed opponents in those situations last season.

According to PFF, Smith’s 90.6 grade against man coverage was second among FBS wide receivers (minimum of 13 targets), recording 25 receptions for 384 yards and four touchdowns on 32 targets with a near-perfect NFL passer rating when targeted (156.3). Smith also averaged 4.09 yards per route run (sixth in FBS) with an average depth of target of 11.1 yards, indicating that if Will Howard could correctly identify that Smith was facing man coverage, the nation’s No. 1-ranked recruit in 2024 would be turned loose, and Ohio State could hunt chunk-yardage plays (Smith caught 12 passes last season that traveled 20 yards or more down the field, racking up 467 yards and scoring four touchdowns, recording a near-perfect PFF grade of 99.9 when targeted on deep throws).

Julian Sayin, who was named Ohio State’s starting quarterback on Monday, shouldn’t be expected to decipher what Pete Kwiatkowski is throwing at him in his first career start. Nevertheless, it remains to be seen how much Kwiatkowski and Duane Akina alternate between playing man and zone in the opener.

That has more to do with trusting the communication that the secondary has worked to rebuild in the wake of losing Jahdae Barron and Andrew Mukuba than anything else. At the same time, an effective pass rush could make life on the back end much more manageable if the Longhorns can routinely pressure Sayin.

Although Smith was good last season against zone, catching 43 passes for 783 yards and nine touchdowns, shading coverage to his side of the field and devoting more resources to him, in general, is the path of least resistance.

Elevated to the No. 2 wide receiver, with Emeka Egbuka out of eligibility, Carnell Tate was much better against zone last season (a season-long PFF grade of 73.7) than when working against man coverage (59.1). While it’s risky for Texas to let its defensive backs handle Tate, Brandon Inniss and the other Buckeye receiving threats more often in one-on-one situations, Muhammad and the other Longhorn defensive backs should be ready for what they’ll see inside the Horseshoe in 12 days.

I wouldn't be shocked if they lost two of LSU, @Louisville and @South Carolina. I get that the Clemson offense should be very good and they certainly have a lot of defensive players getting NFL buzz. The thing is their defense wasn't any good last year. The freshman Louisville tailback absolutely diced them and Sellers ran for 170 yards. I guess the theory is that Tom Allen is just that big of an upgrade on Wes Goodwin.

Their DC was really bad. That defense will be much better with a competent DC

I went to every Texas/okie light game, home and away, from 2003-2007. There was definitely a three game stretch where we shut them out in the second half after spotting them a lead in the first. But for every one of the five seasons I mentioned, we gave them a lead and then snatched it from them in the second half. In 2007, I was convinced we were done, and then Colt and Jamaal went apr shit in the 4th quarter.

Incidentally, I almost got my ass beaten by Brandon Pettigrew outside Murphey’s bar in Stillwater after the 2007 comeback. I ran into him on the street and complimented his game (I think he went for close to 150 yards that day). Apparently he tried to dab me up after my comments and I was too drunk to notice. He got offended that I had left him hanging, and the bouncer and one of Pettigrew’s buddies intervened in the nick of time.
