OSU has remained good for a long time due to a lot of fortunate events. They got Meyer who is not only an excellent coach, he’s a top tier cheater. That laid the foundation.

Day has been riding that for a long time, combined with the weak schedules over the years that are top heavy. Michigan was down for a long time. Penn St was down and coached now by a guy who can’t beat a good coach.  They’ve recruited well under NIL because they have strong financial support.

The biggest surprise for me is that I thought Day was an above average coach, and yet he’s been able to pull out some big wins. Not sure how. Something just doesn’t add up.

Since Paul Brown got to OSU in 1941 (before winning our first NC the next season) OSU leads the country in winning percentage.  The main factor has simply been a long string of good coaches.  Since Woody arrived, the worst HC we've had was Earle Bruce and he's in the CFB HoF.  There are a lot of factors at play in maintaining that success - primarily being the only major program in a football-crazed state - but high among those factors is simple good luck.

Once.

Could not move out of that dump quick enough. I do miss all of my international bros though. They were fucking awesome. The Brazilians and the Koreans loved ripping darts.

Nah, fuck that. I miss playing for (and winning) national championships.

Leave the coaching search for soccer. At least, I fucking hope Kelly finally gets fired.

Helps to have a fan base that will literally threaten to kill you for losing to your rival.  I can’t imagine any coach we’ve ever had was worried about the local lunatics burning his house down while he slept.

The combination of mountains of cash and existential terror is a great motivator, lol

Have you seen any videos with a breakdown of what to expect from a Patricia defense?

They're still running a 4-2-5 since Patricia is the only change on the defensive staff. Patricia will probably bring certain blitz packages from his background. What will change most will be the defensive playcalling and in-game adjustments. It's easy money to bet that Patricia will be a significant downgrade from Knowles in that respect.

FWIW I think Sark has done WAY better than I expected at TX.  When he was hired I was among the many who mostly said "huh?" but he has already proved me wrong on that take.  He's been excellent and seems to be set for the long haul.

Ryan Day is hitting his 7th season at Ohio State and was all but fired on Dec 1st last season pending the playoffs.

Sark inherited far worse than Day did too.

I thought it was okay. Definitely had some good points. I get why, but there is some B1G Homer in that interview. It's not bad, but definitely there in a few spots.

at the very end after praising sark as a+ this and a+ that, he closes with this:

"at places like texas, and usc, how can you not be good there"

"and there are other places, like utah and nebraska, how can you not be good there"

You’re skipping over a fair bit of history there. Remember that period of time between Brown and Hayes when OSU was referred to as the “Graveyard of Coaches?” From Widdoes to Fesler, it wasn’t a exactly a who’s who of coaching acumen. Fesler’s bumbling of the Snow Bowl opened the door for Woody.

Earle Bruce was a better coach than John Cooper. Cooper was just a better recruiter. Cooper once said, “You gotta recruit players who can play better than you can coach.”(10/11/21 - If that date fell on a Monday then it was on the Buckeye Roundtable radio show). You might counter by saying recruiting is part of coaching and that’s true, it’s one of the most important parts. But Earle was a mentor to both Jim Tressel and Urban Meyer and all three of them have winning records against Michigan. Earle’s impact has arguably been a more crucial part of the ongoing success of the Buckeyes than Cooper’s. John Cooper’s biggest contribution to the program was to modernize the recruiting strategy. As an X’s and O’s coach he mostly delegated and he was questionable as a motivator, unquestionably a disaster when it came to the most important game of the regular season going 2-10-1 in The Game.

Indeed he did and after his first season, he had some tough slogging to persevere through. It certainly could have gone south or sideways from there. He's done an admirable job all things considered. Now it's time ...

Great breakdown of the tOSU offense last year.   don't know that a freshman qb has the maturity that Howard showed.  That Texas D flew around, and only had a couple of lapses.  Bend but don't break and pressure tOSU's youth at play caller into mistakes.  They're going to happen, so capitalize, especially in the rush to get the ball out to Smith or a receiver into disguised coverages.  Above all, hopefully, Texas can bring pressure up the middle with the line.  Linebackers and safeties, Simmons--great, but really think the pressure up front will break teams, and this is the best opportunity to test what Texas has in the middle.  The Horns have depth there, does tOSU?

However, on the flip side, I really have no clue what the Longhorn offense is going to look like in action.  What a game for both qbs to cut their teeth in.

To me, the advantage for Arch is that he's seen an elite rush come at him, and Sayin hasn't. As the video shows, the home crowd doesn't save you from it. Arch has seen elite game speed pinning its ears back and coming at him, and it won't be new to him, but it will be new to Sayin. Arch has made both bad throws and good throws knowing he's about to be hit, and he hasn't been rattled. Sayin, on the other hand, hasn't had to do so, and no one knows how he'll react. We all hated what happened here, but the sequence in the video will pay dividends for us on Saturday.

View the video at your own peril.

lol oh boy. Look, I don't put any stock in it at this point, but "we're going to be okay because of how Arch looked against Georgia" is one of the most impressive exhibitions of batshit homer mental gymnastics I've ever seen on this board.

On a more substantive note - I just watched Sayin's "highlights" from 2024 and all plays from the 2025 Spring Game. The dude throws a pretty ball - very tight spiral with an on time delivery. Good ball placement, although he didn't throw into many tight windows (but he didn't have to). He can move a decent bit to avoid pressure and even scrambled for a few yards.

We are going to fuck him up something fierce. He lack pocket awareness, processes slowly, and pats the ball before he throws. He does not throw the ball with any zip - his long passes weren't moonshots, but his short passes have little urgency to them. Those are all fixable problems, but they are not going to get fixed before Saturday and he is going to get his shit wrecked by our defense. If he isn't getting sacked he will throw the ball into coverage and distribute a few picks. Seriously, he does not look ready for this game. He may turn into an absolute baller by the end of the season or next season, but he's not even close to that yet.

We're playing Quinn Ewers?

It has been astounding. There's no other program - and I mean not one - who has consistently made good hires.

I would start with Woody Hayes rather than Paul Brown. Paul Bixler and Wes Fesler weren't exactly amazing.

And unlike other programs that put together amazing runs, it's been a series of hires. Hayes coached for 28 years, but after that it's Cooper at 13, Tressel 10, Bruce 9, Meyer 7, and now Day in his 7th season. Programs like Penn State under Paterno, Nebraska under Devaney/Osborne, or FSU with Bobby Bowden had super long streaks with one or two coaches, but once they were forced into the game of having to make successive hires, they get into the same problems other blue blood types have. Some of them like USC and Texas make several subpar hires, and the record reflects it.

And it's not like the hiring process is always smooth sailing. Tressel in particular, it seemed like they looked at every one but him until finally they needed a yes and knew he would give them one. I guess Meyer was lucky, but he seemed like a complete slam dunk at the time after his successes at Utah and Florida, he was available, and Ohio State seemed like one of the very few jobs he'd actually accept. I don't think Ohio State was taking much of a chance there. I thought Cooper was a great hire, too, even if he ended up being a bit of a disappointment for his Michigan and big game struggles.

Being a major program in a football crazed state - I'd also add having a healthy population base, unlike say Nebraska - has helped, and yes, luck has been a factor, but regardless of the reasons, I find it a remarkable and unprecedented streak in college football. One that I'm envious of, quite frankly.

Phil Fulmer, Lloyd Carr, Larry Coker, Gene Chizik, Les Miles, Jimbo Fisher. Orgeron is probably worse than all of those. Maybe Coker or Chizik are worse. It doesn't matter. All of those are mediocre head coaches, in my opinion. Coker, Chizik and Orgeron are flat out not good.

I appreciate all the comments on this thread observing the litany of mythology the OSU fan base has about their team. I remember them being the same way in 2005 prior to that game. There's a culture thing going on there.

As far as Arch Manning "tapping out" I've seen several references to him suffering a concussion in the Cotton Bowl on the 8 yard run and unwilling to go back out on the field, unlike the tough Quinn Ewers who was obviously the better quarterback anyway because Manning couldn't beat him out for the starting job.

Also, it's a common refrain that anything Texas did well in the game last year is dismissed as "and we still beat them by 14 points!" Never mind that 7 came on a fluke screen pass that if we just put the guy on the ground the half is over. I consider that a worse mistake than the scoop and score that put the game out of reach.

Look, the better team won that day. Ohio State earned the victory. But acting as if the game was a blowout and dismissing anything Texas did well as something OSU was easily able to overcome is simple lunacy.

I don't believe Ohio State will be able to run consistently on Texas fielding a light box with 6 defenders close to the line of scrimmage. I believe Texas will be able to field the safeties in umbrella coverage again. There's going to be tight windows in coverage just like there were last year. If Sayin can make those throws the way Howard did, more power to them. I do not believe that's going to be the case.

I also think too much importance is being put on this game. I think it's natural, but to me the more important aspect for both teams is how much do they improve from this game to their next legitimate opponent - Washington for Ohio State and Florida for Texas. Both teams are going to have to improve to reach their season ending goals, and unlike 2005, this isn't an elimination game. It's an awesome barometer for both squads. But for entertainment purposes I'm hoping for a beatdown so I can watch the Ohio State fan base completely crumble. I also want to watch the rest of the games that day, and that's going to be difficult if I've smashed all my electronics watching a defeat.

I also love how none of them mention it was a knee to the helmet that dinged up Manning. Not some rough tackle. Dingdongs

Crowd noise could affect a new OL playing together for the first time - particularly one with a new C. A few false start penalties won't surprise me, and are the home crowd's reward for a job well done.

It's a good thing our o-line doesn't have a history of pre-snap penalties over the last couple of years.

I hope the Horns beat the ever loving shit out of Ohio State, then best them for shitting. Our games with OSU remind me of our games with Texas, being a one sided series for the most part.
We are 4-1 vs the nuts over the years.  Would’ve been 5-0 but for one knucklehead losing his cool on one play and causing us to lose momentum. I knew immediately it was costing us the game. It was the 2014 BCS semifinal.  We had OSU in the Sugar Bowl and were having our way, leading 20-6 and scoring right before halftime.  On the ensuing kickoff, our LB Reuben Foster, who also played on the kickoff cover team, absolutely blasted their return guy on the 10 yard line.  He should never have returned that kickoff. Foster hit him like a sledge hammer guided missle at full speed.  The buckeye was laid out flat on his back and not moving. I was actually concerned about him.  Then, lonng after the play, a la Smokey in Friday standing over Deebo yelling “You got knocked de fuck out!”, a Bama special teams guy, a squirrely reserve DB, strutted up and made the “safe” signal like a stolen base, and skipped off to the bench. Here comes the yellow flag for taunting. Their LOS is now the 25.  The Dome is now silent.  Here comes that monster QB Carnell Tate suddenly playing like a world beater.  Here comes that great OSU RB who was drafted by the Cowboys, running for a touchdown.  Instead of being on the 10, trailing 20-6 and Bama fans going apeshit, they started on the 25. Halftime score was 20-13 and they had all the momentum, and never looked back.  To this day I despise that dumbass. He didn’t even make the fucking tackle.

1978 Sugar Bowl: No. 3 Alabama 35, No. 9 OSU 6

1986 Kickoff Classic: No. 5 Alabama 16, No. 9 Ohio State 10

That game was at Giants Stadium.  Derrick Thomas was a young linebacker for Bama.  In the last desperate minutes, OSU, trailing 16-10, kept lobbing the ball to Cris Carter, hoping for miracles.  Fucking Thomas got called three times for interference, keeping their drive alive. Finally, their last pass (to Carter) fell incomplete in the end zone and it was over. All the way back into the city on the bus, this asshole on the bus kept yammering about the greatness of Ohio State University and Buckeye football. I asked him whatever became of Rex Kern and he shut up. Then I asked if he saw the game(s) where Woody lost his shit and tore up the first down markers or the time he punched the Clemson player. He became sullen.  He was a poor sport and did not take the loss graciously.

Cardale Jones.

Reuben Foster is a wifebeater, so him knocking out a defenseless person is par for the course, I suppose.

I enjoyed the stories, in any event.

In addition to the three Cam Williams jumps per game you also had two Jake Majors flinch snaps and one Cole Hutson early pull.

Cam Williams was a one man drive killer. He was “Killebrew-esque” in terms of stupid penalties (albeit a different type of penalty)

Not to upset @closetojumping but in one day McJaggy is going to become the best white, country-singin’ wide receiver to come out of Texas high school football in the last 35 yrs. People are going to be calling him a faster, better lookin’, 4.0 version of Limas Sweed.
