Not to be pedantic, but what are we defining as a side character? If they’re part of the main cast (Lucille or Ron Swanson), is that side? Frank Costanza and Rafi would more qualify, I would think.

The latter, I think. Henri from Cheers.

Yeah Ron Swanson is a main character.

THIS is my favorite side character on Parks and Rec but there are several great ones:

“tougher than it look though.”

”ok so that one is dead, we know that.”

”soon as i’m done with these birds.”

i still somehow find a way to use at least one of these every few days.

The only main character in Parks & Rec is Leslie.  IMO.

In AD it’s just Michael and maybe George Michael.

Parks & Rec is an ensemble cast. It's led by Poehler but I'd consider everybody in the direct office and Chris Pratt, Rashida Jones, Adam Scott and Rob Lowe as main characters and not "side" characters. They're on too much. Same in Arrested Development. But this is hard to define, I know. Lots of room for interpretation.

There have been some great ones already mentioned. I'll add:

The Wire is even more this way.  I have a really hard time calling anyone a main character.  Maybe D'Angelo and Stringer?  Griggs?  Just too many various plot lines and entities within that universe for me to say any one character stands above.

there might not be one main character, but there’s like 20-25 characters before you start getting to side characters. there are hordes of new main characters every season. rhonda pearlman, jay landsman, maury leavy, shamrock, donut- these are the side characters of the wire.

and calling ron swanson “not a main character” on parks?

Ron Swanson became the most popular/iconic character in Parks & Rec.  The show wasn't built around him.

What's a side character?  That's the question.

In Seinfeld, it's literally everyone outside the main 4.  Same with Always Sunny (main 5).  Those shows seem easy to delineate.  P&R?  Arrested Development?  The Wire?  In a true ensemble how far down do you have to go?
