If Arch Manning or Colin Simmons tears their ACL in a bowl game that causes them to miss most of (if not all)  2026 is the juice worth the squeeze? All to say "we beat Michigan"

Cancel spring and fall camp.

Forfeit all games.

Potential crisis averted.

Let's test this theory. Without looking (I know you'll cheat) who won the citrus bowl last year?

I don't know who won any of the bowls.

Hell, what bowls did we play in? I know we beat ASU and lost to tOSU. I have no idea which bowl games those were.

Without looking, who were all the cfp teams last year, which teams played which bowl game and who won each game?

Irrelevant. We know football got played.

Peach and Cotton!

We needed that Peach Bowl win to collect all of the NY6 bowls, like Thanos

Bobby said he’s hearing Burke won’t play in this game. Sounds like he may have been playing through some bumps and bruises down the stretch.

I am 100% on board with this. I want the guys leaving to enjoy a trip to Disney world and have some popcorn on the sideline during the game. I want to see all the players expected to contribute in 2026 on the field. I would not tell the guys leaving not to play, but I am not going to persuade them to suit up. This is basically a 2026 preseason game in my eyes.

Because they’re being paid to play in it. These are now young professionals. Prove you’re worth it.

The full quote:

Steve Sarkisian on the effect ND opting out of its bowl game can have on college football: "I don't know about the ripple effect for everybody. We all have goals and aspirations of winning conference championships and winning national championships, at least we do. But I also think there's an experience factor in all this, there's a growth in all this. There's development in all this. There's camaraderie. There's so much that goes into this that sometimes a bowl game is about celebrating a season and finishing a season the right way."

Exactly. Non-playoff bowl games are a celebration of everything you accomplished during the season. Time to go out to...um...*googles Citrus Bowl*...Orlando and party. Check out Disney World I don't know. Then play a game against Michigan.

I don't really see the point of skipping the bowl game.

These games are so lose lose now.

Stars don’t want to play risking injury for nothing. If backups show out, they are immediate portal risks.

they should tie nil payouts and bonuses to bowl game participation and wins, like they do for the coaching staff.

Arch needs to play more games. Every game he gets more confident. If he gets injured well he gets injured. That's football.

And if Simmons gets hurt well at least it happened in December.

Nobody who needs to worry about the draft or an imminent pro career will be playing.

And heck maybe some of our returning starters who are resting injuries might not play either. It is a chance to see who our starters for next year will be.

I'm glad we're playing in this game. I'd rather have 3 more weeks of buy in from these guys before the portal opens. ND on the other hand has 100 dudes sitting around for a month trying to decide whether to stay or go.

School gets paid, keeps expense reimbursement, splits the rest with SEC. Some (all?) coaches get incentive, maybe. Is there an extra payday for players? If so, do opt-outs get paid or nah?

Last year's Citrus bowl of 2 non-elite 9-3 schools was meaningful to Illinois and SouthCar fans and 50,000 people in the stadium.

Viewership number of 6.5M was higher than ACC CCG and equal to B12 CCG.

I'm definitely watching the THIRD EVER matchup between 2 of the top 5 winningest teams of all time

Don't Olineman make $50k? 50k at 20 years old is worth fighting for, not just in the game but in practice and preparation for it. I'm sure there's other relevant examples for other position groups.

Show you're worth it.

I'll be there coincidentally because my son is going as a mascot for some part of the halftime performance. Glad the Longhorns are playing.

Looks like the big thing is the new Universal Studios park called Epic Universe. Good luck getting tickets now though. I had to have a local I know walk up and buy them at the park for the 30th.

Generally on board with this, except I’d like DJ Campbell, Robertson and Hutson all to play so Arch doesn’t die.

this is a legitimate rebuttal. Only rebuttal I would have is we have seen what the OL looks like with Flood's 1st selection, perhaps the 3rd cut might actually be good.

The 2022 Alamo Bowl against Washington was just about as meaningless as this game, and I recall all of our starters played a full game, save for Bijan who had already declared for the draft and was a projected Top 10 pick.  Maybe players like Arch and Simmons take a different approach.  But if a team decides to play in a bowl game, I don't think it's good for the team if healthy players who will be returning in 2026 decide to opt out.

Seriously.  Two-all time teams... two of the biggest programs providing one of the best match-ups of the post-season.

Imagine being a Longhorn fan and thinking, "no, I'm done watching Longhorn football now.  I don't want this game" WTF y'all!?

Win the game and move to a tie for fourth with crybaby Notre Dame on the all-time list.

Two of the top five most-watched teams in 2025:

Also...

Who wants to bet we draw more eyeballs for our bowl than three of these four first round match-ups?

we have people on this site who legitametely believe Texas went 9-3 this year because they didn't play a spring game questioning the value of extra practices and more live reps against an upper tier power 4 opponent.

If a player is afraid of injury they shouldn't play another game ever.  Airplanes crash sometimes, so don't get on the flight.  Better be careful what you're eating you might choke.  Not playing as a player is really not different than Notre Dame not being in a conference.  Simply selfish.   There is ton of guys playing who will not go pro and they still suit up.

Because the people that pay you, cheer for you, show up for you want to see it? Opting out sucks for the fans. It sucks for the product. I don’t want to see Texas practice squad play vs Michigan’s practice squad.

Yes this has always been my take since this has become a thing a few years ago.   What are the chances a player actually has a career altering  injury that ends a season during the balance of the regular season?  And what are the chances this happens in a bowl game to conclude a season?   We hear of the times it's occurred and it becomes a narrative like it occurs more often than it really does.

I get this and it is completely valid to feel that way, but nobody involved with Texas is going to write Ant Hill a 13mm contract with 6mm signing bonus if he gets hurt. If I was his father, I am telling him to sit his ass on the bench.

...and if they have half a brain, they have insurance:

https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/15388893/2016-nfl-draft-prospect-jaylon-smith-collect-5-million-insurance-policy

This is 2016 so I'm sure the policies are even better now...

Quote

Former Notre Dame linebacker Jaylon Smith took out an insurance policy in the fall that would pay him $5 million if he got hurt and could never play again or up to $5 million if he got hurt and slipped in the 2016 NFL draft.

A source with knowledge of the policy said Smith will receive $700,000 if he falls out of the first round and gets picked as the top pick in the second round. If he doesn't, he'll collect an additional $100,000 for each spot he falls.

Smith would set a loss-of-value record of $3.1 million if he fell to the 55th overall pick.

Smith would be able to collect up to the full $5 million, which is tax free because he paid for his own policy with taxed money, and still play.

Yes they should. The contracts for these players should have much more escalator incentive built in.

Has anyone considered the horrifying prospect that we might get a Big XII crew for this game?

That thought crossed my mind yesterday.

Please let Kevin Mar and his crew be declared the best Rig 12 crew and sent to the Cotton Bowl the next day to call a potential aggy/Ohio State game.   It would be fitting crew for both of those teams    LOL!
