Can't Ukraine just promise to not be in NATO, then when Russia leaves just join NATO and say they were crossing their fingers behind their back? It's the Russian playbook.

Promise not join NATO
Rename NATO
??
Ukraine joins new organization

(Hey it worked when we threatened to destroy NAFTA and just renamed it to USMCA instead)

It's probably been mentioned before, but if we are moving towards a sort of economic world war to see which side can inflict more suffering on the other, bet on the Russians to outlast the world on the suffering part.

Basically all they know is suffering.

I would normally agree with this, but before the war Russia’s GDP was smaller than Texas’s.  It’s not like Russia with some kind of economic powerhouse like China.  Sure, Europe will have some problems in the short term as far as oil and natural gas, but plenty of other countries and companies are more than happy to take up that slack.

Yeah, this is going to be a huge deal. Germans are saying that Berlin Hauptbahnhof got 15,000 on Sunday and another 15k yesterday, which is small potatoes given what Czech is going through. It is absolutely unreasonable to expect the immediate neighbors to bear this type of brunt given their relative size and economic capacities, so there can't be the resistance by other EU member states to accept some type of distribution scheme the way there was in 2015 with the Syrians/others.

I think a lot of lessons were learned in 2015 and there is going to be zero fucking about in Brussels when it comes to countries across the Continent pulling weight...this absolutely cannot be left for Poland and Czech to manage alone. You don't take your share and provide support, cohesion funds should be cut. Period.

And the US should be loading up those C17's and flying our fair share here.

Do they use gaseous tritium and deuterium in their booster fission weapons/stages?  If so I thought that had to be replaced something like every 6-10 years at most.  Otherwise it decays to helium which will poison the fission.

Deuterium does not decay, it will last forever. Tritium does decay with a half-life of about 12 years, so it needs occasional replacement. Another issue, is that as the plutonium decays, it forms new elements and isotopes, and so the composition of the metal core changes over time. The changed composition does not work as well, and in particular I think is prone to premature detonation with loss of a lot of yield. But that would not likely keep the weapon from going off in some form, which is enough unfortunately.

Updated best case resolution:

Russia gets:

Ukraine recognizes Crimea as Russian

Ukraine pledges to NEVER join NATO or host nukes

Ukraine agrees to UN oversight in Donbas

All sanctions lifted

Ukraine/West gets:

Russia gtfo of Ukraine entirely and recognizes their sovereignty/government (including Donbas as part of Ukraine)

Russia pays full cost of reconstruction+

Unspoken outcomes:

Europe moves to dramatically reduce dependence on Russian energy

West arms Ukraine to the teeth (except for nukes)

West works covertly to have Putin’s govt replaced

China uses Russia for cheap energy

NoCR...but I think we can all agree that Rubio appears to be broadcasting information for some reason.  And he is incredibly well-versed on the matter, that much I know.

Most MOCs have a few issues they specialize in, usually due to their state’s needs and what not. Like they really get deep into the weeds of policy and geopolitical movidas. Some issues they delve into are due to their natural gravitation toward a topic.
It’s also their job and responsibility.
Sen. Rubio initially gravitated to foreign policy and intelligence, specifically dealing with Russia.
Why? Pretty simple. He was very close to his maternal grandfather. Conjecture on my part, but I bet a plate of ropa vieja he heard many stories from his grandfather.

Parents didn’t return to Cuba because… communism. Natural for him to gravitate to what he did initially.

Curiosity is the mother of knowledge.

Or they could join NAUTO, the North Atlantic-Ukraine Treaty Organization which is obviously completely different.

I was thinking more of the North Atlantic-Russo-Ukrainian Organization, after UA pushes the Russian troops all the way back to Moscow and takes over it. Call it... NARUTO.

Been tried.  Twice.

I would definitely make demands on Russia. No weapons in Crimea and no military base within 150mi of border. And no return of weapons confiscated during the war. And no disarmament of Ukraine. No puppet PM for Ukraine and trial of Lukashenko in Ukraine or Europe for war crimes. Let him be a fall guy for Putin.

And after Russia falls again following the death of Putin. Ukraine could take Crimea and Donbas back during the turmoil.

Sol bottle throwing Babushkas are your thing? Cool, good to know!

Growing up, had a Czech friend who's "babicka" was such an amazing cook.  It would take her all day, but getting invited over for Sunday fare was not something you missed.  Lots of stuff I couldn't pronounce or remember the name without looking it up (other than Schnitzel).  Felt like I was leaving Fogo De Chao.  Glorious.....

Apparently she was also less than impressed with the fare in West, Czech stop, etc

For anyone who wants to know more about these Javelin missiles:

tl;dw:

1. They are light (only about 50 pounds)

2. They enter on top of the vehicle where armor is weakest (others have mentioned this)

3. They are expensive - sometimes more expensive than the armor they destroy. Each missile costs $175,000.

4. Fire and forget from 4km so no need to guide the rocket.

IMO - the expense is superfluous considering how reliably they knock out a tank in one shot. That's a pretty incredible force augmentation for Joe boot

Also mentioned by someone earlier... They melt the armor and the liquid hot metal drops onto the soldiers inside. Talk about a way to go.

Have to agree with this, when you are at war, the cost doesn't matter if you lose.  You only worry about money after the fact, which means you won.

Yeah, the thing about Russian AA defense, that makes it so good, is that all the pieces are interconnected:  short-, medium-, and long-range missiles, radar installations, etc.  Take out some of the pieces and it's nowhere near as good.

That true for most modern AA systems. The only way they can deal with stealth aircraft is a lot of data correlation between multiple sensors.

Shaped charge.  Been around since WWII (HEAT rounds).  Guess it's better than being turned into a red goo from a sabot round going through one side (entry hole) and sucking you out the other (exit hole)

Yeah I had to wonder what they were shooting at that costs less than that considering Russian tanks are about $2-3 million each.

I don't think this is a problem for us. We'd be fine if Ukraine decided to agree not to seek NATO membership.  Honestly, this is probably the best path out for Russia and Ukraine.  Our issue is if Russia requires NATO to agree not to pursue additional members. That isn't going to happen.

Listened to a podcast (Cleared Hot) a while back talking about Jav's.  SEAL, former Devgru stationed with  conventional forces at some remote FOB.  The enemy learned pretty quick the effective range of their sniper rifles and camped out just past it.  So he got pissed, traded some of his kit to the guys to allow him to use a few Jav's.

Said those guys were holed up with belt-fed weapons raking the base.....and seeing that missile come straight down on them......glorious.  And no more harassment after that.

r/MilitaryPorn - DEVGRU Gold Squadron operator Andy Stumpf pictured in Afghanistan. Frustrated by incoming PK rounds & the teams ineffective small arms fire, Stumpf would bring a Javelin (top left on ATV) to hit enemy positions. I have a different perspective on this.  As someone who has worked with a lot of military units including aircraft carrier deployments I think  the Mission Accomplished was really talking about that particular carrier group's mission and giving those sailers and naval aviators some closure to their part.

It was an unfortunate messaging thing that is was broadcast globally.  I don't have any behind the scenes info but guess that the sign was made by the ship/group and not requested by GWB's people.

Yeah, i mean their actual mission had been accomplished and GW landing on our carrier, in their Gulf was supposed to represent a symbol of strength/might that (quite honestly) large deployed groups like us need to stay engaged with the deployment. To the civilian world in case you were unaware: there’s always another mission ‘til you go home.

The imagery was then taken from that realm and put into civilian media where there are lots of very passionate perspectives which had no trouble pointing out the tone deaf irony. That was the thing though, it was supposed to be tone deaf/rude. Something that showed the World what we had done almost like putting a foot on the bear we just killed.

I think that division and criticism polarized the administration and led to moves that to them demonstrated strength/might but in actuality was just yanking the sword from their belly getting us covered in blood and shit.
