Русский корабль - иди нахуй

A short story that hopefully isn’t connected to anything soon: grew up in the Midwest, spent my middle school/high school years in Kansas City. I used to play roller and ice hockey on a travel team so we were always around this same group of families as we traveled playing hockey. One of the kids that was one of my better friends had a dad that was a pilot out of Whiteman in Missouri. I guess I thought his dad was a fighter jet pilot because when I was there for a weekend, he took us to show what he flies…a B-2 Bomber. Being 9/10, we were allowed to look in the plane but I remember that still being pretty quick and hush hush. We got to fly the simulator which was fun of course but always wondered about that guy. There were a couple times where he would run out of tournaments or not be there the next day for “missions”. Looking back he could have been having a mistress but 9/11 did happen shortly after so didn’t see him for quite some time. As cool as it was to see those things fly, I sure hope we aren’t using those anytime soon.

Surely our own billionaires have picked up on this cue. We need to scan Flight Aware with that in mind. Also I have the Marine Tracker app -- I will see where the superyachts are heading. I don't think anywhere on the North American continent would be ideal, so I am thinking some of the further flung Carribbean islands. New Zealand / South Seas. Vlad will be nuking Hawaii so that's out. Indian Ocean has some real paradises -- I always wanted to check out the Maldives.

If you are right, what does it matter? Buy the ticket, take the ride. Also, water, drink some.

What a gaping vagina.  It’s a proxy war.  Next were the Baltics, at which point nukes would fly, so yes this is the place to stomp on his toes using St Javelin  instead of whipping out article 5.

Fuck off with this macho talk. It's just stupid. Ukraine was a festering gray area. Putin had accepted the Baltics as lost.

And again even if not, and even if he did take back the Baltics, (which would not happen), are you willing to die over that? Are you willing to see your kids die with radiation burns over that, before you die in agony the same way?

You know, everybody in Texas called Sam Houston a pussy too when he wouldn't swear to the Confederacy. Y'all are swearing to a Confederacy of Doom and I won't be party to it. Houston predicted total destruction of the South and Texas and he was right. In the event of nuclear war, I will be right. Neither Houston nor I wanted to be right, and as he wanted to do everything he could to preserve the Union, so I want to do everything I can to preserve peace. Peace brings time; time brings change.

Everybody chill the fuck out and let news of Putin's failure percolate as much as it can through Russian society before we escalate things over the brink.

So now we are closer to nuclear war than we've probably ever been, and it's over a country we all agreed three weeks ago was of "no strategic value" whatsoever to the United States.

Do I have this right? As I sit here pondering the possible annihilation of myself and all I hold dear, will the remnants of humanity one day say, yeah,, but the sanctity of Ukrainian independence was worth it, as they gnaw the bones of fallen enemies in caves?

Some damn fool thing in the Balkans, Part 2, Armageddon Boogaloo.

(Spare me the geography lesson. I am aware Ukraine is not in the Balkans.)

This is how "there's nothing but bad choices" looks.  It sucks.  But that doesn't change the choices.

And you and I both know that this is not about Ukraine qua Ukraine.  It's about a psychopathic ruler who, by the way, has been ACTIVELY waging war against us for years now (I won't go CR, but we damned well know that Russia has been attacking our sovereignty through political and election interference aggressively for at least a decade).  There is a global fight happening.  Whether we want it or not, we're in it.

The stakes are fucking high.  Yeah, they were high when Chamberlain let the Sudetenland go and declared "peace in our time."  Sometimes, you have to stand and fight.  A time and place happens, and that's where it is.  So, here we are.

You're straw-manning a good bit here.  Not many people here are calling to escalate -- almost all of us think that our current approach is appropriate.  We shouldn't get directly involved, start a no-fly zone, etc.

We should stay the course.  Bleed Russia dry.  Let Putin further marginalize and delegitimize himself and Russia.  Meanwhile, he has awakened Europe from its delusional slumber, helped them realize they need to fix some of their shitty energy policy, and revitalized NATO.  All of these are wins.  Let's keep up the pressure.

Exactly this. What has happened in policy in the past day to make @MaybeACoordinator concerned that we are somehow closer to nuclear war currently than we were when this conflict started? Stay the course.

Or...and hear me out.....those ships don't look to have an armed escort.

All you need is some ballsy Ukrainians to acquire some sort of fast-moving vessel in the eastern med (I bet one can enter into a shady transaction in Greece, for example), get in there with a coupla javelins, and boom.....you've sunk a shitty Russian amphibious ship from a mile away.  I wouldn't be surprised if they aren't heavily armored.  AND, even if they are, set the javelin for one of its "from the top" strikes.  Blow a hole in the deck, set a fire below deck, and that ship is toast.

I think it may be easy to find some ballsy Ukrainians.

As Miller EP posted, judges were looking for "A Good Start." And said in Danny DeVito's voice.  But you will receive some lovely parting gifts.

To temper MaybeaCordinator's paranoia, Putin is not mad.  He is a stable genius.  And the last thing that goes through his head, right before the bullet, will be to wonder how he ever let NATO get the better of him.

This video, posted yesterday or so, mentions that Russians have been building a pipeline for fuel stretching from Belarus down south towards where the convoy was stalled. Has anyone seen more about this? Seems like a potentially significant development for them.

Yeah, I posted that yesterday.  It also gives some insight into the Russian perspective on progress.  More balanced than the all Ukraine side.  It was from before the UA counter-offensives though.

Really hope that there is an Andrei Dufresnevich working to escape Putin's bunker and leaving a special parting gift. Like his big red button no longer activates his nukes but permanetly seals his bunker shut and turns on a never ending broadcast loop of Zelensky playing piano with his dong.

Not sure if already posted but best indicator of Russia being turbo fucked is China showing atrocities on state run tv.  This is approaching the endgame way faster than I expected.

South Ossetia and maybe Abkhazia with fewer Russian troops now?  Georgia be like:

I do hope if we get a whiff of Georgia looking to take advantage of the current situation we can talk them back, at least I think so.

The uninformed me thinks both the Ukranian successes and Russian defeats may both be a bit exaggerated.  No way to really no on the Russian side.  BUT, if the Ukranians can hold off the Russian advance and keep resupply routes open, they can force Russia into a stalemate with no real victory anywhere to claim.  So playing it forward from there, any negotiated peace has to begin and end with Putin's removal.  There is no way Russia can return to the world diplomatic stage with him at the helm.  BUT, if the settlement ended with him being sent into exile in some palatial compound in Nork, where he gives Rocket Man a few billion for the privilege of living in is communist paradise, is the world OK that he doesn't face harsher consequences for this?  I think if it ends the suffering, and Ukraine doesn't capitulate on a single acre of land, that you take that and the world tries to move forward.

Now as for Ukranian reconstruction?  A BIG issue to tackle.

Reconstruction is going to be paid for by the seized Russian currency reserves.

Correct. If you want to discuss what we did wrong and how Russia is in the right here please take it to CR

Fuck Mearsheimer and his Putin apologist bullshit.  Apparently, all Russia has to do is claim they see something as a threat, then if the U.S./West follows through on anything they claim is a threat, the bulk of the blame for the following "crisis" lies at the feet of everyone but Russia.

That is not what Mearsheimer is saying. He has pointed out that this war has been brewing for eight years, we've egged Ukraine on all along with false promises, Ukraine has acted recklessly in aggravating the gorilla next door...His contention is there was a time when Ukraine could have accepted its place in the world as a buffer state and it would not have been that bad. At the heart of all of this thought is Thucydides: Strong nations do what they will, weak nations suffer what they must. Ukraine is a relatively weak nation but one of their bargaining chips is neutrality. Instead of using it they listened to America's crack foreign policy team (almost all of y'all agree about our other recent disasters -- why is this different?) and now we are teetering on the brink of nuclear holocaust over a country of no strategic import to us.

Great job everybody well done.

He also points out that is useful when thinking of global strategy to be able to put yourselves in the shoes of the enemy. When Khruschev tried to put missiles in Cuba, we almost went to nuclear war. Imagine if China or Russia brokered some deal to put their military on the ground in Mexico or Canada. That is what NATO Ukraine is to Russia. To us, Chinese Naval Station Veracruz; joint operating base Monterrey.

We have a Monroe Doctrine. Russia has something similar and Ukraine is the centerpiece of it.

Mearsheimer acknowledges that Putin is a thug who in his heart of hearts would love a "Greater Russia" or Soviet Union remix but he believes, as I do, that Putin is smart enough to know that he simply cannot pull that off. Not today, not tomorrow, not in any of our lifetimes. How the fuck is he going to manage Ukraine as a client state with his army in shambles and then launch fresh invasions on three Baltic states who hate him maybe even more than the proudest Ukrainians thereby triggering a NATO heymaker?

It is just not possible. He doesn't have the juice.
