That depends on the legality of their efforts.   The alleged subtext here is that Epstein used the dirt he has on public officials to blackmail them into letting him off the hook.   If his lawyers were parties to that, they'd be part of an illegal conspiracy.

To an extent.  I direct your attention to Fed. R. Crim. Pro. 35 and Federal Sentencing Guideline § 5K1.1, which basically authorize the government to reduce sentences based on information collected from a defendant.  If the government chooses to let the defendant off and bury that information, that's their problem, not the "defense teams."

I'm not a huge fan of investigation by indictment, from which these two provisions draw their force, but let's not get all high and mighty right now. This is a government cover-up and the fault lies with the government first and foremost.

That whole text block was an absurdity.

L'invitation au voyage

Mon enfant, ma soeur,
Songe à la douceur
D'aller là-bas vivre ensemble!

Décoreraient notre chambre;

Dont l'humeur est vagabonde;
C'est pour assouvir
Ton moindre désir
Qu'ils viennent du bout du monde.
— Les soleils couchants
Revêtent les champs,
Les canaux, la ville entière,
D'hyacinthe et d'or;
Le monde s'endort
Dans une chaude lumière.

Là, tout n'est qu'ordre et beauté,
Luxe, calme et volupté.

Charles Baudelaire

Invitation to the Voyage

My child, my sister,
Think of the rapture
Of living together there!
Of loving at will,
Of loving till death,
In the land that is like you!
The misty sunlight
Of those cloudy skies
Has for my spirit the charms,
So mysterious,
Of your treacherous eyes,
Shining brightly through their tears.

There all is order and beauty,
Luxury, peace, and pleasure.

Gleaming furniture,
Polished by the years,
Will ornament our bedroom;
The rarest flowers
Mingling their fragrance
With the faint scent of amber,
The ornate ceilings,
The limpid mirrors,
The oriental splendor,
All would whisper there
Secretly to the soul
In its soft, native language.

There all is order and beauty,
Luxury, peace, and pleasure.

See on the canals
Those vessels sleeping.
Their mood is adventurous;
It's to satisfy
Your slightest desire
That they come from the ends of the earth.
— The setting suns
Adorn the fields,
The canals, the whole city,
With hyacinth and gold;
The world falls asleep
In a warm glow of light.

There all is order and beauty,
Luxury, peace, and pleasure.

Researcher Reports Soviets Created Child-Trafficking Rings in the West for Blackmail - The rings are believed to be still operating

"A scholar on Soviet Russia has uncovered claims that former General Secretary Yuri Andropov wanted to subvert the West by creating child trafficking and pedophile networks to blackmail business leaders and politicians.

[...]

The Soviet leaders had begun planning the program in the late 1970s, when Andropov was chairman of the KGB—the Soviet intelligence agency that was set to run the operations. Nyquist noted, however, that the program was controversial even by the standards of the Soviet leaders.

[...]

The program the grandfather described was a classic honeytrap—a method of espionage to lure people into compromising sexual encounters for blackmail. This program took it a step further, however, by using children as the bait.

It was a form of “false flag recruitment,” according to Nyquist, where the KGB agents likely did not reveal themselves as agents to their targets. He noted that “if the KGB honeytraps somebody, they don’t know who they’re working for, because the KGB officer may be somebody who speaks English without an accent who merely references themselves as part of an organized crime group.”

[...]

In the 1980s and into the ‘90s, shocking cases of pedophilia and extreme abuse began to emerge in the United States, Australia, and Europe. Many of the cases involved high-level officials. Some were prosecuted, but many were thrown out due to lack of physical evidence and child testimony not being recognized.

Among the most prominent cases was that of billionaire Jeffrey Epstein, a convicted pedophile accused of holding underage girls as sex slaves on his private Caribbean island. He flew numerous top politicians and business leaders to the island on his private plane, dubbed by news outlets as “The Lolita Express.” According to press reports, the plane has a bed that was used for sex with young girls. According to the same reports, flight logs from Epstein’s plane show that former President Bill Clinton flew on The Lolita Express 26 times.

Numerous girls alleged they were sexually abused by Epstein, and Epstein was charged by the Palm Beach police department. Yet after a plea deal, he was sentenced in 2008 and served only 13 months in prison for one charge of soliciting prostitution from a 14-year-old girl.

A 2006 court filing, cited by the New York Post, says that a police search of Epstein’s mansion found he wired it with hidden cameras to record his guests engaging in orgies with underage girls, which he could use for blackmail.

Epstein was very well connected. It has been reported that Epstein kept contact numbers of figures including Tony Blair, Naomi Campbell, Dustin Hoffman, Michael Bloomberg, and Richard Branson, but no flight logs have ever surfaced showing any of them ever flew to Epstein’s island. Many of his A-list contacts dropped him after his 2008 conviction.

Often overlooked in Epstein’s case is that the father of his ex-girlfriend Ghislaine Maxwell was deceased media tycoon Robert Maxwell, whom Ghislaine accused of sexually abusing her.

[...]

He said the overall system, if true, would have given the Soviets and later post-Soviet participants significant power in establishing networks of influence and control. He noted that even just among business leaders, since they often fund politicians and political causes, by blackmailing them “you’re suddenly getting into the fringes of the political system. You’re able to penetrate the political system.”

“Pedophilia, if you look at it, is an important tool for corrupting, controlling, and manipulating a foreign government, and sabotaging its economy, sabotaging its political process, even sowing confusion,” he said. “This whole thing can be used in all kinds of creative ways to hurt the target country.”

Fascinating documentary that sticks to the facts presented in court regarding Epstein without crazy conspiracy nonsense thrown in

What crazy conspiracy nonsense is there?  After watching that, there can be no crazy conspiracy nonsense.  No joke.

Pretty wild bit about then 15y/o Yugoslav Nadia Marcincova being bought from her parents and became an Epstein 'sex slave' and facilitator/recruiter of other girls.  The crazy part?  Marcincova also became a trained pilot on the Gulfstream jet.  ---> Note also the passage about how Epstein and co-conspirators did not abandon their sex trafficking enterprise even while they were under state and federal investigation of crimes committed in violation of 18 USC 1591.  The defendants "merely changed their style."  "Instead of targeting local Palm Beach FL high school girls, the Defendants transported young females from other places in the US and abroad and brought them to Defendant Epstein's mansion in New York and his private island in the Virgin Islands."

It's a mind warp to realize that at least three women played important roles in the trafficking and abuse, including one being a private jet pilot capable of transporting sex trade victims out of sight.

That documentary also made reference to police discovering the rooms in Epstein's home being wired for audio/video.  In the article I linked above, note this passage:

"In the 1980s and into the ‘90s, shocking cases of pedophilia and extreme abuse began to emerge in the United States, Australia, and Europe. Many of the cases involved high-level officials. Some were prosecuted, but many were thrown out due to lack of physical evidence and child testimony not being recognized."  The evidence was there, just in the wrong hands.

It appears Epstein was a full blown peddler of high level blackmail by way of targeting people of power and influence to get caught with underage kids on video.  So WHOSE bidding was he doing ?  How much illicit cash did he stand to make for serving up high level individuals for others to have influence over them?  Again, this has all the trappings of transnational Russian mob.  The players, the associations, the money laundering.

I don’t give a fuck who is implicated - if they broke the law, lock them up.

Everyone knows how much I love Beto but if it came out he boinked a 16 year old on Epstein Pedo Island then I’d be screaming for him to be arrested.

Now if “implicated” means socialized with Epstein and moved in the same circles - that’s gross but not against the law. If a Democrat did that and is still in office it’ll be up to the voters to decide if being friends with Epstein is disqualifying.

Does “implicated” mean someone doing business with him? Using their power to help him avoid justice? Calling in favors to help him out? Some of that could be illegal and if so, lock them up. If it’s found to be legal behavior but maybe they knew what he was up to, didn’t actively participate in the sex stuff but still used their influence to help him?

Then I think that last example is almost as bad as participating. The enabling of his behavior and helping him to avoid justice allowed many more children to get abused at someone’s hands. Those people are accessories to child abuse and sex trafficking.

And Democrat or Republican, they should be shown the door.

And, FWIW, I think the accessory category is where Acosta and Dershowitz and Barr and Starr and Prince Andrew, and possibly Trump and Bill Clinton are likely to fall.

I don’t think any of them actually had sex with underage girls. I think they knew exactly what Epstein was up to, didn’t care, valued their business/political relationships over the safety of hypothetical teenagers, and used their power and influence to help him avoid justice.

Lock them ALL up.

Nancy Pelosi daughter: 'Quite likely some of our faves are implicated' in Epstein case

Similar statements were made after Kraft got busted at the sex trafficker parlor in Jupiter FL down the road from Mar-a-Lago; that there would be more big names coming out in association with using sex trafficked individuals (different from prostitutes).

If Nancy Pelosi's daughter comes out with that kind of statement, think what her mom knows.  Anticipating some big moves could be another reason why Pelosi is staving off impeachment until the time is ripe.

You know that John Corzine stole a billion dollars, and he wasn't prosecuted? Did you now that under Obama, nobody, and I mean literally NOBODY, not a single financial executive went to jail. I don't dispute the Pubs are completely corrupt. But you're a god damn idiot if you don't understand the Dems are too.

But John corzine!

The Clover Chronicle? For fuck's sake. Draw a cartoon on a bar napkin and you instantly have a more credible source.

That fire picture was mis-attributed, i.e. fake.  It's what I get for trying to respond to GRH.

Spoiler

That guy is most certainly NOT a scholar of the Soviet Union, and the Epoch Times is Falun Gong buffoonery.

The source sucks.  Sometimes I drift into not giving AF.  I'll take my lumps.  Yuri Andropov not withstanding, converging information about Epstein's acts and associations suggest this was about more than personal sexual gratification.  The extent of mob ties (Maxwell) and whether he had his places rigged for video kompromat may never get elaborated.

I went to CNN's site to see what's up. Beside the Epstein story was a piece about a Navy admiral, Vice Admiral William Moran, who was set to become the Navy's top uniformed officer, whose career has ended for merely maintaining a professional relationship with a disgraced fellow officer.

Quote
Moran said in a separate statement he "made this difficult decision based on an open investigation into the nature of some of my personal email correspondence over the past couple of years and for continuing to maintain a professional relationship with a former staff officer, now retired, who had while in uniform been investigated and held accountable over allegations of inappropriate behavior."

He continues, "To be clear, my decision to maintain this relationship was in no way an endorsement or tacit approval of this kind of conduct."

"I understand how toxic it can be to any team when inappropriate behavior goes unrecognized and unchecked," Moran writes. "Every Sailor is entitled to serve in an environment free of harassment or intimidation."
Both statements note the situation arose from a professional relationship over the course of Moran's career with the Navy, and was not a private relationship.

General Petraeus, a very promising American military man and maybe elected official, had his career ended because of an affair where he revealed classified information. I don't believe any actual harm came from his actions.

These two stories illustrate a high standard for behavior in the armed forces. It's a standard that is likely too stringent for civilian politicians, but the standards should not be light years apart.

Look at what is accepted behavior in the entire Trump administration. Nepotism, pathological dishonesty, fraternization with enemies, murderers, and international outlaws.

Now throw in sexual harassment, assault, and, at least, an ongoing relationship with a convicted pedophile and likely child sex trafficker.

At the very least, a naval ensign would be drummed out of the service for such behavior if not put in the brig.

What does it do to morale to have such a repulsive, dishonorable miscreant as Commander in Chief?

Maybe child rape will cost Trump a few percentage points of his base. It's more likely that they just get more furious at fake news.

It is absolutely, positively incredible. I am not yet at the stage where I just roll my eyes at the things Dotard says and does. This one though, hoo boy.

- 3 unnamed employees took part in the scheduling and recruiting of minor girls.  Based on sketchy sourced reporting upthread, these are likely women (Maxwell, Kellen, and Marcincova)

- indictment describes it as a "vast network" which sounds like it relates to more than just Epstein's conduct.

- asset forfeiture

- the trafficking charge: Epstein "did affect interstate and foreign commerce, did recruit, harbor entice, transport, provide, and obtain by any means a person..."  The bolded text jumps out because it is referenced but not elaborated with any detail in the indictment.
