Aggy 2024: Still waiting on the Looch 44

Looking at his resume, I don't really know how he ever managed to get the Arizona job.  It's a whole lot of meh. He's worked for a couple of impressive names in Bellichick and McVay for a total of 3 years, but was never in charge of the offense at either place.  He was something called a clock mgmt specialist for one of his years with the Rams and the year he was QB coach in New England was their first year without Brady.

I think most kids response is going to be ‘what the fuck is a Jedd Fisch?’  He’s not exactly a name - and neither are any of his current assistants.   Interested to see if just keeping Robinson around is enough to keep the roster/class together.

Sir,

You do not appear to fully appreciate the qualifications of Jedd "Put me in his fucking camp!!!" Fisch.

Here are a few choice samples from Aggie 247.

As you read through these, you can just sense the collective opinion of the cult shift from "who da fuq" to "Excellent hire!," in a dozen posts.

The reason you don't hire a coach on 1 decent season is because if Arizona had lost the 1 point win against a bad Stanford team, a 3 point win vs Oregon State, or a 3 point win against a bad Colorado team this year........Fisch wouldn't even be on their radar.

2 or 3 plays away from not even sniffing an opportunity at aggy.

I really don't know very much at all about Fisch. My first look is that he hasn't accomplished a lot to generate excitement if he is hired. I promise I don't know Looch personally, but I have a gut feeling that he will set me straight with his unmatched written word on not only the value of this hire, but how much of an idiot I am if I don't see a Natty in the near future with this hire.

I may be wrong

He hasn't. His resume is as follows.

1) Position coach or lower-tier assistant for a lot of NFL teams. The only time he was in charge of an offense at the NFL level he was fired by the Jaguars.

2) OC for bad college teams. 6-6 and 7-5 Miami teams, 6-7 UCLA, and 6-7 Minnesota.

3) Two bad years and 1 good year at Arizona as a head coach.

This is not a good hire no matter how aggys try to spin it. They're hiring Fisch based off 1 good year at Arizona that included a billion close games which could have gone either way.

His resume as OC:

Minnesota 2009 - 111th in the country in scoring
Miami 2011 - 64th
Miami 2012 - 49th
Jacksonville Jaguars 2013 - 32nd of 32 teams in scoring
UCLA 2017 - 37th

He had two 'successful' years as an OC.  Only lasted more than one season in one job - Miami.

To be fair, Bill O'Brien went 15-9 as a college head coach before leaving for the NFL.  Obviously Penn State is not the same as Arizona, but it was also right after the whole Paterno thing.

Back when you had to sign an NDA to take the college tour.

Before any ags in your life start shvitzing over the rumors, jew might want to get them these books for two of the 8 gifts that you plan on getting them for Chanukah.

I kept the original one in my backpack along with a Spanish-English/English-Spanish dictionary my first 3 years in Los Angeles and I understood everything that someone said to me.

👍👍

PS- If the ag in your life is a big reader, go ahead and get them a copy of Chaim Potok’s “The Chosen”. It won’t make any sense to them, but it might help them to eventually understand the coaching decisions during games.

lessee here:

1. P5 head coach

2. Improved every year

3. cheap (only making $2.5 million at Arizona)

Fits the bill. Might be a pretty good hire.

But most importantly he's cheap.

Mistakes happen in pairs; you do too much then you do too little or vice versa.

Bjork is playing to his audience like Billy when he talks about setting up incentives so a coach doesn't get paid well unless he does well. Sounds great if you're happy getting a guy for whom the base salary seems pretty good.

They're low-balling after setting the bar for high-balling. They're going from their weird notion of you get what you pay for. They concluded that if you pay someone a lot of money that person must be fantastic. In their minds, Jimbo was elevated by the high salary he commanded from them

Seems that didn't work out.

Now they're convinced that incentives are the way to go. Certainly not stupid on its face. Their problem is that they assumed that everybody wanted that sweet A&M job because it fucking gawd damn A fucking and M. They discount the amount of money it took to draw Jimbo as a reason other coaches might be interested. Jimbo loved A&M. Everybody secretly does when they're not quivering in fear of them. So the Ags have the swag to lay down a tough contract.

Result? They get an itenerate guy who just had a pretty good year.

I guess the other coaches Billy said were wearing out the phone lines wanting to take the job just didn't impress the Aggie brass as much as this Fisch guy.

Sort of like Petrino.

Be physical. Get good players. Knows how to make his program successful. Verrrry impressive.

Good bull.

Very insightful. Stuff I never knew was important.

I'm about the most optimistic guy in the world when we hire new coaches. If we hired this guy so we could be the place where he proves himself, I'd be furious. The Ags will rally around him and say stuff they've been saying with every new coach for decades:

  • Lot of bad stuff going on in the locker room.
  • Team didn't have that Aggie fire.
  • This guy doesn't stand for any bs.
  • He'll make us tough.
  • I think the team is getting it's swagger back.
  • tu is so scared of us.

That's their problem, that whole "sleeping giant" sense of entitlement. It skews their thinking to the absurd.

All they really need to do is trim back some of their more embarrassing "traditions," accept that an 8-4 baseline isn't so bad, hire a normal, decent coach and evaluate him normally. Then build from there. If they'd just do that, they might be surprised how many really good seasons they could have in the up years of their cycle. I suspect it would be more satisfying than this whole "shoot the moon because we're rich" idiocy they've got going.

But that assumes some degree of normalcy to begin with, so of course it's the one thing they'll never do.

This sounds very familiar to when they hired Franchione and he talked about the precise time to eat a pre-game meal.

Not only that, but Arizona looked like dogshit until they put Fifita in for their 5th game. They lost to Mississippi State and barely beat Stanford. So this entire coaching decision is based on the last 7 games with Noah Fifita starting, who may just be an extremely special college talent. And Fisch couldn’t even figure out he was worlds better than De Laura and only played him because De Laura got injured.

None of that screams good hire.

Well the flip side of that is, two of Arizona's losses were in OT and the third was to undefeated Washington by just a touchdown.

Fisch inherited an awful Arizona team that went winless in Sumlin's final year. The rebuild he's done there is damn impressive, but he'll be walking into a very different situation at A&M.

I cannot wait for the bullshit article Looch is going to spin about the Fisch hire. He pretty much proclaimed a National Championship for aggy hiring a "sitting NC coach." How's he going to top that bullshit with this JAG coach hire? He should save everyone the bullshit and just say, "we hired him because our budget is in shambles and this nobody was willing to be hired for cheap."

That's the point. The 1 good year he's had at Arizona includes a bunch of close games where luck is involved. It's the same reason TCU is now 5-6 this year compared to last year. Being in a bunch of 1 score games is not sustainable.
