Ways Democrats can win back the independents and win in 2028:

  • Find the next Bill Clinton. A Southern, conservative Democratic statesman who isn't afraid of distancing himself from the fringe, identity-politic morons* who keep setting us up to fail by handing easy talking points to the Republicans.
  • Find the next Ann Richards. An outspoken, Southern** conservative, gun-totin' woman who Americans can love with a big social heart and an even bigger semi-automatic rifle.
  • Make Hispanic Americans the priority. Hispanics are feeling taken for granted and have been migrating to the Republicans. Hispanics represent approx. 25% of the populace. Hola!
  • Be better at embracing new media. Republicans ran circles around Democrats in 2024 in understanding how new media feels more trustworthy to Americans today than traditional platforms.

It's not that hard and the margin wasn't that great. Biden/Harris ran a shit-show of a campaign and lost the independents, but they should be hoppin' mad by 2027 and ready to be won over.

*You can fight for dramatic social change in the United States or you can win an election. You can't do both.

** Candidate could also be from Pennsylvania, or Ohio, which is kinda like the South. Not Utah. That place is weird.

Fuck all of the conservative southerner bullshit. No offense.

Kendall was the guest speaker last night at the Nacogdoches County Democratic Party "Beans and Jeans" fundraiser. I came away very impressed by his passion and his message of focusing on working class issues and education. He's from New Boston, TX and comes across as very genuine. Time will tell if he'll be able to make the changes necessary to actually help Dems win in Texas again, but he's a step in the right direction IMO. I spoke with him briefly afterwards and thanked him for coming to Nac and told him how great I thought his message was. I hope he is successful.

Talking about why he thought he was elected as chair in a 7-way race:

He also has some good thoughts around the 6:50 mark about why a lot of dem leaning people stayed home in 2024.

Absolutely.  Show up and fight. I'll fight with you but you gotta give me something

A "majority of the voting public" is not a majority of Americans, which is what Brisket said, nor is it what I responded to ---- and that's not even taking into account the part of Brisket's statement that the damage is irreparable.

Post LBJ, democrats have only been elected during times of crisis except for Bill Clinton…. and that was only due to a strong 3rd party candidate AND a decision.

Winning in 2028 will mean that the nation is facing some sort of large economic catastrophe or existential event.

I have no faith in the democrats strategically make any kind of moves that help them. Our best hope is that they don’t make any decisions that alienate more of the electorate than they already have and just hope whatever terrible shit that happens doesn’t kill us all.

It’s a fact that 92 million Americans of voting age skipped the last election. Unfortunately, considering where we are today, they don’t matter, other than taking up wasted space in the majority of Americans.

Does anyone live in Washington? Many folks there are apparently pretty ticked off that they’ve rolled out a zero interest $100k loan for blacks and certain minorities only to buy a house in Washington state. It is only repayable when they sell it.

https://www.homeownership-wa.org/services/bhi/

This is a backdrop to very serious debt and deficit issues facing the state as well. I really don’t think these types of programs help Democrats win elections. If anything, these programs should be economic based not race based.

I don't know this to be true, but what if I told you that this was a program available nationally using HUD money but administered by the states, but this particular program was simply branded "for black people" in an effort to better engage with that community?  Would that change your mind?

I'd have to dig into this one further, but bear in mind we have state (via multiple agencies) and local (both for Travis county and city of Austin) 2nd lien down-payment assistance functionally similar to each other but branded differently (this one is for teachers, this one is for first responders, this one is for veterans, etc.).  My favorite is from SETH; we don't get to use it in Travis County but last I checked, it was also a 0% down-payment assistance lien, forgivable depending on length of ownership. It's possible something of this ilk is available to EVERYONE in Washington state.

That said, I agree with you and @Brisketexan that it's bad optics and I'd not be giving conservatives an easy target if I were them.

Yeah. They should definitely be income based. But reading the text is seems like it is only for a very small number of low income black people:

Quote

The Black Home Initiative (BHI) aims to create opportunities for 1,500 new low- and moderate-income Black households to own a home in South Seattle, South King County, and North Pierce County in the next 5 years.

1,500 people in a pretty small geographical area? Over 5 years? Seems likely to only be a pretty small budget item and potentially be revenue neutral in the long term.

Seems like a pretty small thing to get upset about. But yeah they probably just should have made it income based. Granted Washington has a pretty small black population compared to the rest of the US so if they did just make it income based it probably wouldn't really help in the goal of getting black people in homes. I don't know.

As for the deficit, they are one of those states with no income tax like us. We get away with it by just allowing public services state to go to shit. Maybe they should follow suit or start having an income tax.

Don't be a Republican or have anything to do with Donald Trump. I think people will be that pissed off.

Beto teasing another election run typifies the dems.

Why? That doesn't make any sense. He is free to run.

He still has to make it through the Primary. If nobody better shows up then what difference does it make?

I know many on this board love him but he couldn't win against CRUZ! Didn't he not even capture the latino vote. White liberals love him but that isn't a big enough voting block to win.

Well that is how it goes. Between 1860 and 1932 the Democrats only ever won when the Republicans seriously fucked up. Likewise between 1932 and 1968 the only time the Republicans ever won was when they had Eisenhower.

The Democrats see how they can win, and heck even the Republicans see it, by doing the anti-Oligarchy thing. But they don't want to. They would rather just sit back and be corrupt and let the Republicans just keep fucking up and putting them back in power by default. It is up to us to kick out the losers.

He won't win. I respect him as a political operative, he is out there doing important work, but really the only position he can hold is Congressman from El Paso.

But we have to run somebody. And whomever that is, they at least need to show they can beat Beto in a Primary before I have much confidence they can beat Cornyn or Paxton or whomever.

FWIW, $100K in this area will buy a lovely 1.5 car garage or some lovely land to build a tiny house on.

I respectfully disagree.

The right candidate, of any race, male or female, with the right message and timing can win. Heck, Harris almost won, and she was absolutely the wrong candidate.

However, I think Trump's acolytes will be very vulnerable in 2028, though we cannot hope to win unless we have a huge change in leadership.

I keep saying it, but the obvious answer is Matthew McConaughey.

He's a blue dog dem

He's a known name / trusted name

He's a celebrity

He's got a best selling book

He has administrative experience-ish (UT)

Business experience-ish (Salesforce.com)

He's a real Texan and not MAGA

He's good looking

He is well-trained in speech, oration, monologues, giving performances (debates, SOTU, etc.) via acting

He's the antidote to Trump in every way and the Bizarro World Trump for the Dems to fight Trump if you look at it.

He has a lot going for him, for sure. Solid family man. Progressive. Donates a lot to causes. He's been doing a lot of things to position himself for some kind of role in politics. I interviewed his wife for her healthy food initiative for women. She is very impressive. NOTE: I'm not saying he should run. I do like that you are thinking outside the box.

The Georgians appear to be saner than most Texans:

A new poll from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, conducted between April 15 and April 24 among 1,000 registered Georgia voters, found that voters preferred Ossoff over Greene by a 17-point margin—the largest gap in the survey—in a hypothetical race, with the Democrat getting 54 percent of the vote compared to 37 percent for the congresswoman.

The result was largely driven by Greene's unpopularity with independents, 60 percent of whom said they would back Ossoff in a matchup, and moderate Republicans, with nearly 10 percent of Trump voters saying they would also back the incumbent.

The same survey found that Republican Governor Brian Kemp was tops among possible GOP contenders, leading within the margin of error at 49 percent to Ossoff's 46 percent. The poll had a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.
