Whatever happened to Trump threatening to look at Hillary's Secretary of State stuff and lock her up or something.

Not gonna cut off his supply, now is he?

i was trying to remember the ~recent interview i saw that kinda reminded me of that (long meandering question, etc) and i just did.  after one of biden's earlier public appearances when the right was losing their minds about cue cards and buzzers and who the fuck knows what, kayleigh mcenmoron went on hannity and i caught a clip on twitter, and it was basically like:

hannity: kayleigh, you were with the president for a while, you saw him make plenty of public statements, and it's my understanding that even though he had a ton of brilliant minds around him writing for him, that he was always in charge, that he was always making adjustments and corrections and notes to speeches, making sure they were in his voice, and agreed with the message he wanted to deliver to the american people, and sometimes he may have gone off the cuff and riffed a little, but he always knew what he wanted to say, even if he didn't have the speech or the notes, and he certainly wouldn't have needed cue cards or the teleprompter, but obviously we know he was supremely gifted in that way, and probably better than any other president at messaging, and just had that ability, wouldn't you agree?

kayleigh: yes.

lol.

Despite those cute soundbites the real people who underestimated trump were the mainstream Republican Party when he blew away the primary in 2016. The dems were idiots for nominating Hillary but since the Clinton’s had hoarded all the money there was basically no choice. I don’t agree with Bernie on many things but I was an enthusiastic supporter in 2016 because I saw the threat trump was, saw that he could win, and Bernie had a better chance of beating him. Bernie doesn’t lose Michigan Wisconsin and Pennsylvania in 2016 so no president trump.

This might be true. An awful lot of Bernie supporters ended up voting for Donald Trump.

That sounds like the most annoying person at a cocktail party.  "Listen, you seem like an intelligent person but as a Bernie supporter who was forced to compromise and go with Trump, I have to tell you..."

Bernie supporters were forced to compromise and vote for Trump?  Makes sense.

And why would someone who did that seem intelligent?

No, the Bernie turned Trumper addresses other people at the party, "You there...you seem like an intelligent person...let me tell you why I switched parties."  The two uses of the word "you" indicate that the person speaking my first fictional quote is talking to another person, the subject of "you."

It's basic English.  It's okay, we'll work on it with you.  ;)

I wonder who would win in a fist-fight between Bernie and Trump?

This is like blaming fans on a football board for a team loss because they (the fans) took the opponent lightly.

It's akin to taking Kansas lightly in football. That Kansas wins doesn't mean that they had no business winning.

The electorate proved more gullible and hateful than anticipated, and that's saying a lot. Recognizing now that they are hateful and gullible won't change those traitorous votes come 2024.

I can play that game. Bernie was an idiot for not appealing to minority voters. Obama was an idiot for not being more outspoken about Russian interference in the election, perceptions be damned. Comey was an idiot for not keeping his fat fucking mouth shut or Hillary would’ve likely won the election, would’ve been a much better President than Trump, and would’ve saved hundreds of thousands of lives during the pandemic that were lost thanks to Trump’s incompetence. The first Clinton Presidency was better than both Bush Presidencies. A second Clinton Presidency would have been too. And it would’ve been good for the GOP because they wouldn’t have been taken over by Trumpism and might have been forced to evolve in order to appeal to a wider electorate.

Trump wanted to run against Bernie. Trump would’ve won the popular vote if he was running against the actual socialist Bernie Sanders. Bernie was also an asshole for not getting behind Hillary immediately after she won the nomination. Instead he kind of figured if Trump won then he’d have a chance to run again in 2020. Which he did, and lost again. That should have put to rest the claim that “the Dems were idiots for nominating Hillary.” Bernie just doesn’t have that broad of an appeal and the base is still mostly center left.

This is where you are SUPER wrong.  Once the GQP went all-in on insane shit like "birtherism," Trumpism, or something a whole lot like it, was inevitable.  Non-reality based right wing grievance populist movements are not isolated to the US these days.  It's a global phenomenon, and the US right has been leading the charge for 15-20 years.  Trump, or someone like him, was inevitable.

Just like Trump again, or someone like him, remains inevitable.

It's really hard to say anything was guaranteed because history is contingent and it's absolutely not the case that whatever has happened was destined to happen, but it's incredibly hard to imagine another path American conservatism could've plausibly taken once American politics and culture began visibly diversifying. There was always going to be a racial backlash to a more visibly diverse America and, given how important the existing racial hierarchy was to conservative white people, I don't think there is an alternate universe where they didn't coalesce in one political party.  "Is America for all Americans or is it only for whites?" is too fundamental an issue for that not to happen.

i think you're right if you don't rewind far enough.  if you only reset to jim crow days or something, you probably have racial polarization no matter what.  if you go back to reconstruction and don't abandon that for another 40 years or so, you might be able to avoid it, because you might have been able to reach real equality and real political power for blacks such that a party platform of keeping them down would simply be surrendering too much of the money and the votes for no good reason to be a viable strategy.  england (as i understand it) doesn't have racially polarized parties.  it's basically all class polarization.  but maybe that is just because they aren't diverse enough yet and they are fated to our path one day.

I’m not so sure. After 12 years of Reagan > Bush, Clinton moved the Dems toward the center. After Obama was re-elected, Bobby Jindal called the Republicans “the party of stupid” and suggested that they needed to appeal to a wider electorate. If Hillary had won, resulting in 12 years of Democratic control of the White House, the pragmatists in the GOP might have had the upper hand because the things the radicals were doing weren’t working. We’ve seen that the Republicans are more concerned with power than with ideology. I think a Hillary win would’ve done them good.

They're not earmuffs.  They're noise-cancelling headphones that the ramp agents wear...the brave souls who rammed the ramparts.  Then took over the airports.

Damn dude, read a fucking history book.  Sheesh.

Also---does anybody else think the artist purposely made Trump look like Liam Neeson fucked his mom, and not Fred?
