Texas Recruiting Notes 2022 - Idiotic Slapfights Unrelated To 2022 Recruiting

I want him in the class assuming he’s not punting puppies on the Internet. Just thinking about the numbers and our other needs. He seems to be redundant and not as highly thought of as some of the other guys.

There is no such thing as too many guys on the lines and also could be good. If the staff isn’t worried about the distribution of ships then sure, let’s take them all.

Yeah - but he's not even close to being our lowest rated recruit (he's a 4-star) - but he's always the first one brought up any time pushing a player out is mentioned.  Poor kid can't catch a break on Surly.

OL Earnest Greene, St John Bosco (Bellflower, CA) - 2022:

The ginormous offensive mauler from Cali is keeping the Horns in the hunt with an official visit to Austin on October 16th.

The 6-foot-4.5, 330-pound On300 four-star (93 score) interior offensive lineman holds 25 offers including Alabama, Georgia, Florida, and Michigan. He just attended the Clemson-Georgia defensive slugfest over the weekend and will see Kirby Smart's Bulldogs in Athens for an official trip on September 18th.

Greene is taking is official visit to Columbus this weekend for the Oregon-Ohio State clash. The big man is on the move.

He hit the ATX over the summer and it made such an impression that he's eager to return to the Forty Acres. On top of UT's official, he's wanting to check out the Red River Shootout in Dallas in October, if possible.

"I honestly really like Texas," Greene told IT over the summer. "I like the staff and feel that I am building a great bond with them."

Wide receivers coach Andre Coleman played with Greene's father in the NFL and he's getting closer to Steve Sarkisian and Kyle Flood. He's certainly one we'll be monitoring moving forward.

Of note: 2022 On300 EDGE and 190th overall prospect out of Hewitt-Trussville (Ala.) Justice Finkley is set to announce his commitment tomorrow at 5:15pm (ET). His top three consists of Texas, Alabama, and Colorado.

As of this evening, he's yet to notify the staff of his intentions, keeping everything close to the vest. He's got photos in three different hats and graphic edits of each as well.

UT has done a tremendous job building the bond with him and his family, selling him on the virtues and opportunities at the University of Texas. Often academics are used as a reason for a player's decision, but in this recruitment, it's certainly applicable.

We'll know in 24 hours.

Coleman doin' work and channeling his inner Oscar Giles

He’s the weakest DL aside from Jones, who has positional flexibility, and DL is the one position where are cup runneth over thanks to Bo Davis. It’s not rocket science.

Afternoon Delight: Where things stand with four-star DL Justice Finkley ahead of decision

Spoiler

Afternoon Delight: Where things stand with four-star DL Justice Finkley ahead of decision

Mike Roach

— Justice Finkley will make his decision tomorrow at 4:15 CST. As of right now, there is still a lot of confidence in Texas for the four-star defensive lineman from Hewitt (Ala.) Trussville. Coming out of his official visit, Texas was able to really catch Finkley's eye along with his family. For a kid who is looking for the best combination of "books and ball", Texas makes a lot of sense. As we head into the decision tomorrow, this is the very latest on what we are hearing about where each finalist stands.

— Let's start with the Longhorns. As I mentioned coming out of his official visit, Texas did a phenomenal job establishing a bond with Finkley and his parents and illustrating the academic opportunities available to him along with the chance to play for Pete Kwiatkowski and develop under him. The Longhorns were able to keep a lot of that momentum through the summer and have made this a much tighter race than anyone imagined. A source in Alabama once told me that it would be better if this played out through the fall for Texas, but a source I spoke to in Austin felt they would be better off if it wrapped up quickly. In checking with sources throughout the day, there is still a quiet confidence. The staff has put in a ton of work on this one, and despite the success they've had recruiting up front on defense, this is a player they value highly. In fact, I've heard Finkley is one of the top overall players on the board for the Longhorns who feel he has both a tremendous ceiling for growth and a skillset that's ready to translate to immediate playing time. I believe some inside Moncrief feel he's an elite prospect. The fact that the quiet confidence remains so strong should make Texas fans feel good right now.

— Colorado is looked at as a wildcard in this recruitment. While nobody seems to think the Buffs can win one over Texas and Alabama, I have heard some people say that Finkley is such a different kid, it wouldn't surprise them to see him take a total left turn. Still, in checking around today, nobody seems to be giving Colorado a serious shot. His trip to Boulder went well and he has some family ties to the school, but it would probably be considered one of the greatest upsets in recruiting if they did win it.

— Alabama is Alabama, and Nick Saban is one of the biggest boogeymen out there. With every amount of confidence I've heard from Texas sources, the caveat was always there that beating Alabama for a kid they want, especially in their home state, is a tall order. When Nick Saban turns it on for a target he's interested in, there isn't a more unbeatable force in recruiting. Our friends over at Bama OnLine have been talking about Finkley's relationship with Crimson Tide assistant Freddie Roach as a big positive for Finkley, and Alabama's on-field performance and NFL development speaks for itself. They've been considered a favorite here for quite some time, but I do think it's interesting that Finkley's camp has been able to keep everything so quiet. The fact that there isn't an overwhelming amount of confidence out of Tuscaloosa is interesting to me. With 24 hours remaining until Finkley makes the call, this one is truly up in the air. I've often felt this way about in-state kids going away from Texas, and I feel it applies here as well. Even if Finkley decides Texas is the best fit for everything he wants, getting to the point of telling Nick Saban and Alabama no is a significant hill to climb. That remains the biggest obstacle for Texas.

— I don't have enough in any direction to go with a 247Sports Crystal Ball. If I'm reading the tea leaves, I think there's something to the fact that the staff feels they are still in it. Typically in the waning moments of a recruitment like this, the losing staffs will start to leak the news to avoid the let down. Finkley and his family have been like Fort Knox when it comes to any information getting out, so it could be that nobody truly knows. Tune in tomorrow on CBS as Texas fans have the possibility of seeing this staff pull off a huge win.

No crystal ball picks or Rivals forecast's.  Kudos to the kid for keeping the $9.95ers in the dark.

Sometimes it can be helpful to just look at who has been the most consistent in recruitments like these, and in this case it is Texas. Bo Davis will close on him, then start helping the other coaches for the rest of the cycle so he's not bored hahaha. Its crazy that im so confident but I do think that Texas has done just about as good of a job as possible with him and his family.... last thing to note... Auburn not being in this race at all shows that he is more than open to leaving the state and Colorado shows that he isn't even all about the SEC. If he is evaluating based on the total package its obvious he will be wearing burnt orange today.

I mean, isn't this a pretty big give away.  Unless he's trolling, which he doesn't seem like the type.

Agreed.

You also have the fact that any and all confidence from Texas $9.95ers is coming straight from the coaching staff. Which....we probably shouldn't be putting a ton of stock in that.

I'm hoping its Texas today, but I won't be upset if its not. Our D-Line recruiting, along with our current unit is impressive. Finkley would be an embarassment of riches. Do I want him? Fuck yeah, will I be upset if he goes Bama? No. I won't ever fault a player for going to Bama.

This. Thankfully Bo is a badass and not a moron so Finkley would be a really amazing icing on the cake to the class but he didn’t put all his eggs in that basket. We’re not hoping to beat out Saban for a Bama kid to save the position group.

Previous staff would very likely be calling up some maxed out middling 3 stars from Texas private schools this evening.

Um wut. Finkley is an edge rusher. Our current edge rushers are the second weakest unit on the team after OL. Ovie is the only guy with any pass rush potential. We are nowhere near the embarrassment of riches cetagory at that spot. We’re struggling for even basic competence right now.

Bama 247 mod

"***Last (likely) nugget on Finkley before his decision...

We spent last night and this morning double checking some things. And at this stage we are leaning towards Texas as trending. Again, with a kid like this he can surprise some people and I do think there’s been some misdirection involved for dramatic purposes. I wouldn’t be blown away/shocked if he did choose Alabama, but I would be surprised at this stage. I’m guessing early playing time and academics played the biggest factor for Finkley. It will be interesting to see if he shows up at any Alabama games during the fall if he does end up committing to the Longhorns (he hasn’t taken an official visit to UA yet). I know that’s been discussed recently with him having tentative plans to visit even after his decision is made."

"Bo wasn’t the primarily on Finkley. It was Gideon. Found that out this morning. And yes good get indeed for anyone who gets him."
