That could be where sympathizers in the government/ISP come into play.

Definitely, also many larger companies and all the foreign embassies have satellite internet so could also easily relay SNET (or other) traffic that way as well if someone within chose to.

Any truth to people in Florida loading up boats headed to Cuba to help? I see it on Twitter but I have no idea to what extent that is true.

Some of those people are crazy enough to do it.

Well....I think a major chunk of Surly, if their dad was a dictator of some nation, would push hard to be appointed as the head of the National Center for Sex Education.  At least those Surly members who aren't lawyers (they would want to be appointed the equivalent of the Attorney General) or doctors (Surgeon General).

I would want the "Sex General" title...and all the authority and powers that come with it.

A reverse Dunkirk ? !

Ya gotta figure the coast guard or navy would put a stop to a mass flotilla heading south.

I didn't want to open that can of worms. But I had breakfast with a good friend of my father, and a friend of mine, originally from Miami with family still there. My father and him used to go on Mission trips to Cuba. He said the Cuban community, in Miami, are loading boats with food, water, medicine, guns, ammo, walkie-talkies, generators, etc. Some spending their life savings. I have no idea to what extent, but he is very devout. I would take him at his word. He said that many of the older Cubans that left Cuba have said they are prepared to go back and fight to the death if need be.

I brought up this point this morning. He winked and said "we'll see." As free American citizens, with no illegal contraband, I guess they will "fuck around and find out". The Federal government could come right out and denounce it, but could also say, they aren't breaking the law. Once they are in International or Cuban waters they are no longer our problem.

This is good to see that they are helping out those wanting to escape.  Also interesting that the Director of the DHS, a born Cuban, has said that Cubans seeking asylum in the USA will be picked up by the Coast Guard.

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/us-homeland-security-secretary-cuba-haiti-boats-no-refuge/

Some tidbits:

People fleeing Cuba and Haiti by boat will not be allowed to enter the U.S., even if they demonstrate fear of being persecuted or tortured in their home countries, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas warned on Tuesday.

Mayorkas said those trying to reach the U.S. by sea will be intercepted by the Coast Guard and immediately returned to their home countries. Even if asylum-seekers manage to get interviews with U.S. officials, Mayorkas added, they will not be permitted to set foot on U.S. soil, regardless of the outcome of their screenings.

"If individuals make, establish a well-founded fear of persecution or torture, they are referred to third countries for resettlement," Mayorkas said. "They will not enter the United States."

I don't think the govt wants its citizens sending a mock naval force to a foreign country, especially one we have an embargo against.

This. Plus I'm sure the government doesn't want to have to deal with captured U.S. citizens at this moment.
