Yeah, that's a good point.  Was talking with my gambling addicted cousin and we laughed about that scene in "Casino" where Pesci is describing how Ace Rothstein knew every little angle about college football games.  QB's dating situation, who was the referee, wind speed, etc.  And that was in the 60's and 70's, long before internet and cell phones.  And then all the info became readily available to the average joe, casual gambler 20-25 years ago.  And still, the spreads remain the same, the house still wins, and there's still degenerates.  But it's yet another new age where players come and go or sit out, most of which occurs after the initial spreads are put out.  Bowl season used to be a haven for smart money, and even my dumbass made a few bucks.  But now?  It's a another brave new world and nobody knows nothing about nothing again.

When speaking with students in b-school about trends and unicorns and all that cliche shit.  I'd tell them...the original 'crowd-sourcing' in America was sports betting point spreads.  That's all it ever was.  It wasn't a measure of how much better a team was, it was how much money thought this way and how much money thought that way, and in between there was some action for the small business (aka, "The House" or "The Book"), and they were just market makers.  That's it.  That's all it is.  USA Today didn't achieve its peak circulation because of the fun graphics and colorful photographs.  They made it because it was the one uniformly available newspaper in every single town in the United States.  People literally got whacked over differences in spreads according to different papers when the advent of calling cards and cell phones came along in the 1990s.  Finally, it was tacitly agreed upon that whatever USA Today printed as the spread in the back of their sports page each Friday (for NCAA & NFL) would be the gold standard because everybody could see it for $.50-$1.50.  So circulation spiked because every armchair QB and sportsbar patron bought a Friday and Monday copy every single week for a decade.  And that, as they say, was that.

As a parent of three high school "band nerds" I must say fuck you.

High school band is its own world, no doubt. But, thanks to the awesomeness of high school football in Texas, it's also the best you'll find pretty much anywhere. And it is a place of belonging for a lot of kids who are not naturally athletic or are different in many ways. But they are great kids and many go on to do great things.

And, holy hell, do they work hard!

I've seen it up close for many years, so I know what it takes to make a great marching band, which is why I get so annoyed at all the oohing and aahhhhing over the aggie band. I admit it looks impressive the first time you see it, but it ain't hard to do what they do.

End soap box.

This post is as unnecessary as halftime band performances. I’m honestly not sure I’ve ever watched one, personally. If someone in a group I’m with is ever espousing “let’s stay in our seats for the band”, we’re unlikely to ever see that dipshit near our seats again.

I remember the band dorks would tell us how much harder they had to work than we did as athletes. Nothing is more eyeroll inducing. Oh, you have to hit your marks and stay in tune while walking? I have to run full speed at other angry males and then we beat the shit out of each other for 3 hours before I go home and do homework. GTFO. I also never saw them during basketball and baseball season as their upperclassmen got honors credits for their dumbass 3 months of “hard work”. It’s a fucking grift, really.

My high school team wasn't good, but both my sons had playoff runs and their games were big events for the whole school community.  Younger sons team was in a 3rd round game 2 hours away in a cold rainy game, beating a team no one thought they would beat. It's a tight game, late in the 4th and they are busting their ass to win and advance and coincidentally extend the experience for everyone- parents, students, band, drill team, cheerleaders, other spirit groups and all their parents...and I hear the band director tell the kids on his little PA..." I know it's cold, but 5 minutes til Chick Fil A!"

I couldn't fucking believe it ...that's your priority right now? Go ahead and go now and don't bother showing up next week

What sort of weird dipshit hates on the band

There have been band threads on this board and its predecessors over the years. Never read them or commented on them because I didn’t care. To each their own.

Band discussions on this thread always start with band dorks “hating on” the aggie band and apparently what a cheap unit it is or some shit. Then other band aficionados come and carry the whine and start sharing their own junior high and high school stories.

This isn’t a safe space. We don’t want to hear about it or how hard your kid works on getting their steps down.

So, yeah, I’ll hate on the dipshitted band discussion on this thread every time. It’s not hating on a band and the difference isn’t subtle.

Yeah I mean at that point go to NFL games and enjoy the absolute banality

Yeah, the band is the only difference between college affinity and the NFL. That’s a lazy false choice that isn’t worth the bullet.

Did some band dude steal your girlfriend? Hard work doesn't always involve violent collisions. My kids did both band and varsity athletics (at an all- district level). Just not football. Musical talent and athleticism are not mutually exclusive. Did you hate the drill team girls too?

Can we get back to marveling at the fact that somewhere, at some time, somebody thought adding puffy paint to overalls was going to increase the cool factor?  And that said person introduced it into a culture so skewed that the practice not only survived but also flourished?

I am in 100% violent agreement here. Especially at the HS level. HS bands now bring out fucking set pieces and do some big operatic display that is nearly 2/3 as long as the fucking game. Nearly every game the referees should throw a flag for delay of game as the band(s) go over as it takes them forever to get all of their shit off the field.

Why college bands can just march on to the field and GTFO yet HS bands have to make it some giant Broadway fucking production is beyond me. Best part of home games at House Park is I can walk to the Tavern during halftime and grab a beer because I know that I will have plenty of time to do so.

***I do not hate the band or the effort band kids put into what they do. I have noticed that over the years, game performances have become only about practice for competitions. And what the hell is up with having electric guitars, kettle drums. and huge sound systems at a “marching band performance?”

Because bands and drill teams have their own UIL competitions to worry about. They don't win those competitions marching in straight lines.

Wether you olds like it or not, Friday night is no longer only about the football team.

It's for the larger school community, which includes band and drill team.

Point 1.  There is only time to practice a competition routine. Getting hundreds of kids in sync for a quality performance takes a crazy amount of time.    The competitions are fun and give the kids a sense of accomplishment.

Point 2.  All the stuff you mention helps more kids participate, supports the band to be innovative and stand out at competitions, and segways into other band activities like Jazz band.

Point 3.  Fuck people who don't like band.

😂 Sounds like we need a Band Dorks forum. @immamac make it so.

I remember Bucky Godbolt on the radio once talking his kid playing “skin flute in the marching band.” He obviously didn’t take it as seriously as some of you.

But I'm flexible.  No, seriously...I can still put a leg behind my head at 47 for proper ball-sucking.  She should call me...

5, 2, 1, 6, 3, 4

Like you I'm flexible but in a different sense. We agree on who should be seeded #1 but differ a lot after that. Seems we'd likely make good wing men for one another.

I can't and never could put my leg behind my head, but I do posses other less tangible skills.

Edit - To be clear, should the extremely unlikely situation come to pass, where you and I are deciding which of the 6 USC pom squad interested in fornication with us both we are going to bed... I'm not a proud man, and I'd be willing to accept sloppy seconds as required. I'm a giving and understanding man, you see.

Mostly, I'm rambling at this point to redirect the conversation towards hot ass USC cheerleaders or aggie stupidity and away from band camp talk.

The drill team girls used to always try to tell us how they worked as hard as we did as well. Right. That said, they were a hell of a lot more fun, so I always went easy on them.

The rest of the post is a fantasy about the band dorks getting over.

None of this is new. Like, not a single part of your point. Also not new? Nobody but the band dorks and their parents care.

There's always time for a good band hate thread. If you crossed a mentally handicapped Charlie Brown with Liberace going through his western musical phase, I assume you would end up with the Texas band uniform. Its not a good look.

I'm With the Band - Giving to UT

If eliminating all marching bands will make stadium beers $.25 cheaper, sign me the fuck up.*

*with the possible exception of a few of the  HBCU bands that dont actually bore me to tears and drop some funk into the mix.

Per Point 1- It’s frigging torture seeing/hearing the SAME THREE SONGS/performances EVERY FRIGGING WEEK! (And don’t get me started on the cheerleaders who don’t actually do any cheers related to the actual football game…)

At every 2A football game there is that gangly football player in full pads in the marching band like clockwork. And yes I heard the whining from band people that we got all the money and everyone made a big deal about football when they worked just as hard. My retort was always, "how many people would come to see you perform if it wasn't halftime at a football game? We get most of the money because we make all of the money. And I don't doubt you practice as long as we do, but what about the offseason when we are sweating our asses off and throwing up in hell weeks and going to the gym 2 hours a day during the summers followed by going to the track for another hour in 100 degree heat. Are you doing that?" That was the end of the conversation.
