(Max Olson) College football transfer portal best available: Tracking the spring window’s top targets

Quote

More than 1,600 scholarship college football players have entered the transfer portal at the FBS level since August, and more than 1,100 of them have already found new homes. This 2022-23 portal cycle felt like it was moving faster than ever in the winter, thanks in large part to the NCAA’s new transfer window opening on Dec. 5 and hundreds upon hundreds of players becoming available at the same time right as the regular season ended.

After a quiet three-month stretch, it’s time for the transfer portal to heat up again with the spring transfer window. Grad transfers can still enter the portal at any time, but underclassmen need to do so between April 15 and April 30 if they want to play somewhere else this fall.

In an effort to help you keep track of who’s going where and which names you need to know, The Athletic has brought back its tracker of the best available players in the portal. As the entries pile up in the coming weeks, players will be ranked based on their experience, production, potential and how much interest they’re generating. This is a fluid list that we’ll constantly update as top targets make commitments and new players enter the portal.

Follow all the latest transfer portal news and rumors in our live blog, and catch up with who has already landed where in our transfer portal signings tracker.

1. DB Josh DeBerry, Boston College

DeBerry was a versatile three-year starter for the Eagles who has played more than 2,000 career snaps and earned second-team All-ACC honors in 2021. Texas A&M, Ole Miss and Wisconsin are among the schools in the mix for the 5-foot-11, 177-pound grad transfer.

2. DE Derrick McLendon II, Florida State

McLendon started 12 games for the Seminoles in 2022 and recorded 37 tackles, 29 pressures and 3.5 sacks. The 6-foot-4, 245-pound pass rusher has two more seasons of eligibility and has taken visits to South Carolina and Missouri.

3. OL Cam’Ron Johnson, Houston

The 6-foot-4, 305-pound lineman moved into the starting left guard job for the Cougars last season and earned first-team All-AAC honors after starting all 13 games. Johnson quickly picked up seven Power 5 offers upon entering the portal and can play two more seasons at his next school.

4. DT Trill Carter, Minnesota

Carter, a two-year starter for the Gophers, has logged 55 career tackles, 29 pressures, 8.5 tackles for loss and four sacks. He earned honorable mention All-Big Ten recognition in 2022 and has taken visits to Texas, Arkansas and Illinois since entering the portal.

5. WR Gary Bryant Jr., USC

Bryant flashed exciting potential as a sophomore in 2021 with 44 catches for 579 yards and eight total touchdowns. When the Trojans’ new coaching staff loaded up on transfer wide receivers, Bryant ended up with a diminished role in the offense. After three games and just two catches, Bryant elected to redshirt and sit out the rest of the season. The former top-50 recruit is considering Texas A&M, Oregon and Arizona.

6. DB Anthony Wilson, Georgia Southern

The 5-foot-10, 200-pound safety is one of the most experienced defenders in the portal. Wilson was a three-year starter for the Eagles who has played nearly 2,500 career snaps and has earned all-conference recognition in all three seasons. He recorded 102 tackles last season, which led all Sun Belt defensive backs, and has received significant Power 5 interest since entering the portal.

7. LB Jurriente Davis, Jackson State

Davis is about to play for his fourth team in three years. The 6-foot-1, 225-pound inside linebacker was a junior college All-American in the spring of 2021 and moved on to Middle Tennessee and then Jackson State, earning starting roles at both programs. Now he’s back on the market and is being recruited by Kentucky, Texas A&M, Colorado and several more Power 5 schools.

8. WR Brenen Thompson, Texas

Thompson, a two-sport athlete who also runs track, was a four-star signee in Texas’ 2022 class who played sparingly during his freshman season. The 5-foot-10, 163-pound speedster finished with one catch for 32 yards and is moving on to try to earn more playing time and targets elsewhere.

9. DE Byron Vaughns, Utah State

After three years as a backup at Texas, Vaughns moved on and got a chance to earn more playing time by transferring to Utah State. In his two seasons with the Aggies, Vaughns recorded 99 tackles, 61 pressures, 19 TFLs, six sacks and two forced fumbles. The 6-foot-4, 225-pound edge rusher picked up a nice list of Power 5 offers in January but did not enroll somewhere for the spring.

10. WR Dominick Blaylock, Georgia

Blaylock came to Georgia with big-time expectations as a top-50 recruit and the No. 5 wideout in the Class of 2019, and he made an immediate impact as a freshman. But he suffered a torn ACL and then re-tore that ACL and missed all of the 2020 season and most of the 2021 season. Blaylock got back on the field in 2022 and contributed 15 catches for 227 and one TD for the national champs.

He'd probably get some run as #2 TE behind JT this fall IMO.

would be hilarious to see A&M target him hard as fuck.

He committed to them at first. They have a hard on for spending  their money on the DL. They are 3 deep in quality there. They absolutely need to spend 7 figures to bring him back home.

They can't, because the SEC has a 1-year rule for in conference transfers.

When they have the chance to stack that kind of quality what’s a redshirt year in the grand scheme of things?

Let’s just try to keep the retard to a level 3 of 10, shall we? The guy who was getting major PT including the national championship game isnt fucking redshirting next year instead of staying at Georgia.

Not sure who missed the mark here, me or you, but I definitely felt like Wulaw's post was dripping with sarcasm, or at the very least a dig at them overpaying for the wrong things.

Ding ding fucking ding. The first post stated if with “it would be hilarious” implying- this is not going to happen and then the second post was absurdly obvious it wasn’t serious. I swear some people here need to wear a football helmet around to stay safe.

Lol at Georgia.  They can fuck themselves.  They’ve bought recruits for years now under the table.  We played this game with both hands tied behind our back.

True and rep worthy.

with NiL, these schools will learn very quickly that Texas, USC, and Miami have resources that they cannot match from a funding standpoint.  We need to do exactly what Riley has done and poach the best players on their teams.

Georgia can absolutely match - large endowment - large student body - top ranked academically - wealthy donors

Probably retaining players

Mainly this but also, I think we need to save our cash for true priorities. Next year we don’t need much help and Bear would be very expensive. He might also push our depth into the portal. The Minnesota dude could help out not so much this year but more next year when Alexander will be in the NFL Now if we lose depth on the d-line through the portal, things could change. The Minn DL isn’t likely to come here and we still will be looking for starters and depth on the DL for the 2024 season.

so our money is going to go towards retaining our current roster who we want to retain plus help with key deficiencies such as DE next year and DL for the following year.

The reason we are doing this is two fold:
NIL still isnt bought in across the board.
1.) The olds still see the one fund as buying players and are reluctant to contribute
2.) The young donors outside of a few don't want to put a million or whatever into a fund with no return at their age
This is something that is being worked on but the money outside of a few donors/chasing a specific player has not been there.

Bear was only a freshman last year.   He’ll be in college for 2023 and 2024.

He’s a difference maker to me and if you can afford him, you take him.

The LOL’s at Georgia are just icing on the cake.

Except Bear is better than all of our depth, and most likely our front line guys. Adding him to the rotation could give a true 50/50 split with Murphy or Sweat with zero dropoff. We may not be in position to get him, but it is rare that a guy like that hits the portal. The obvious answer is just to divert the wreath fund for the next 50 years.

It feels like USC recruited Bear into the portal, and the Ant Hill tweet was used as cover. Georgia mods, as most 9.95'ers, are dumb enough to fall for it.

Bear is worth whatever he's asking, but I'd imagine Texas is keeping their powder dry for a stud EDGE or best available.

I think every recruitnik should watch 30 for 30 Sole Man on Sonny Vaccaro. As the great John Thompson put it : "We all know he can play. But I'd ask Sonny, so is this kid an asshole?"

What would be hilarious is if Jimbo offered Bear big money and got him to go into the portal and Jimbo is so out of touch with the portal he didn't check the rules until someone showed him the reminder tweet.

Anytime you can improve the front 7, which Bear would do, you take a guy like him. Especially considering what we have at the position this year and our first year in the SEC.

Stud edge and portal don't go well together....most rare position in the portal.

You guys are being way too specific. I’m sure it will all work itself out but we’re not in a position at the moment to go after luxuries for 7 figures. It’s just never going to be a productive game to play unless it’s a QB anyway.

personally i'd consider bear a necessity, old mother nature recipe
