Holy shit, a QB wearing zero...

Quinn is great at the less than 20 yard throws.  It’d be interesting to know the % of passes annually in the NFL that are less than 20 yards vs greater than 20 yards.

That cross body throw is a signature of his, even looked like the WR knew that was the ad lib move and halted and stepped back while every other offensive and defensive player - including QE - continued to slide to the boundary.

fun to watch.

Theo Wease is his [guy] in that receiving corps.

Both TDs went to him this week and I think that they linked up for a completion or two last week.

That stat isn't currently tracked. Or maybe PFF+ tracks it, but I don't pay for PFF+.

Tua had an average Air Yds/Comp of 4.1, so it's fair to say the vast majority were completions under 20 yards. Tua was the lowest in the league. For comparison, Anthony Richardson had the highest Air Yds/Comp at 8.2. League average was 5.6 Air Yds/Comp. That doesn't necessarily reflect the offensive passing scheme, but could also reflect check-down tendencies of league QBs. Since league average is 5.6, it's safe to say most teams are throwing completions under 10 yards. By the way, Tua threw it away only 6 times last year. Normally I'd say that's a check-down tendency, but Miami's offense is geared around quick completions in space. Their receivers run a lot of slants, hitches, and outside crossing routes, and they send both RB out into the flats a lot. That rail route that scored two TDs Ewers-to-Blue against tOSU? They run a variation of that route out of the majority of their split-back packages. It's a modified out-route or rail route depending on what the outside WR/TE does.

Outplayed Wilson again.

I don't understand how Wilson could go 15/23 for 151 yards and a TD and still be the 3rd worst player on offense.

I'm glad that Quinn was rated higher, but completing a smidgen over 65% of your passes for 10 yards/completion and a TD with zero INTs doesn't seem too bad. I think that he did get sacked once, but it wasn't for a double digit loss. (-8)

Quinn wasn't "sacked", but ran the ball once for -1 yards, so...

It just seems like the disparity is quite large.

FULL DISCLOSURE: I didn't watch the game and I, and other close friends, have been screwed over by Mormons in the past because we "were in the club"... so I'm not upset by this rating disparity.

really happy he played well and showing off the arm angles. Still looks like a statue to me but another solid game like that should hopefully get him the backup role.

I'm always puzzled by NFL contract implications regarding who gets kept and who gets cut.  Thinking like a simple head of family, given two equally "meh" options, I'd prefer to try to dump the costlier guy and get some of my money back from another team who is desparate.  Maybe that doesn't work, or at least for Wilson.  So often I hear "we have so much invested" which is just lingo for "sunk cost" in my mind.

Where are you getting that info on air yards?  Pro Football Reference?

PFF tracks distance from the LOS.  Behind the LOS, 1 to 9, 10 to 19, and 20+ are the categories.

Over the 3 year period, QE was probably best relative to his peers behind the LOS.  He was excellent in the 10-19 one year only.  Injuries or whatever, he is a tough read with regards to consistency.  It’s key for any QB but protection may be more important for him than many other QBs.

.

The grading is relative to a standard.  If he throws 5 passes right into defenders hands, but they dropped them that will only be an incompletion on the stat sheet but will result in a poor grade for that play. Completions to wide open guys on poorly placed balls can be great stat stuffers but not positive on a grading perspective.  Check it down to an RB who houses it after causing 5 missed tackles will give the credit to the RB whereas they both get equal credit statistically.

"Quinn Ewers shines in Dolphins win over Lions."

Now, I actually watched his play. And it's safe to say he's made the big leap from "likely to be cut" to "serviceable backup." Given his age and inexperience, that's a big first step. If he can stay healthy and get some proper training, I think he'll be a good starter in a few years. He absolutely murders on passes over the middle and hitting receivers in stride, and his footwork/outside throw/decision-making flaws are all fixable if he can get better training and not have his career cut short.

The great majority of them..... Instead of quoting Air yard stats and trying to dill down, here's an excerpt of ESPN looking at the subject.  They don't define it exactly like you but you get the gist....

Quote

In a league seemingly obsessed with finding the biggest arm -- and the most explosive receivers to take advantage of it -- the moonshots might be a thing of the past.

There were 3,416 attempts at least 15 yards downfield during the 2022 regular season, the fewest in any season since 2006.

But when quarterbacks did let it fly, they were pretty successful. Completion percentages on those attempts of at least 15 yards downfield was 45.1% -- the second-highest completion percentage in a single season since 2006.

The trend continued through the first week of the 2023 regular season, too. Both air yards per attempt and number of passes attempted of more than 20 air yards were lower than the 2022 averages -- and the 2022 Week 1 numbers. Just 9.2% of all passes attempted were deep balls, down from 10.4% in Week 1 of 2022, while air yards per attempt decreased from 7.3 to 7.1. Passers produced the fewest yards (6,225) and TD passes (37) in a Week 1 since 2006. They averaged 6.25 yards per attempt, the lowest Week 1 output since 1996.

Why the fuck do Ewers and Wilson have run blocking grades?

So that there will be one single stat where Wilson isn't trounced by Ewers.

60 is average, so you are looking at average score and little below average. So far, the battle for the back-up QB spot in Miami can be characterized as who is the tallest midget. There is a good chance Miami picks up a veteran if one becomes available after teams make their cuts.

That is off. Tua at 5.69 and Richardson 12.19.. Tua was the lowest starter with an aDot of 5.69 and Richardson was the highest. Not going to do the work, but the average is between 7-8 yards.

I can’t get those numbers to come up for me on that site, but, sure, let’s go with that. I don’t think it changes the overall conclusion that the vast majority of passes completed are in the air for under 10 yards from LOS.

I'm just mad I don't get these adds. I want to chat with a hot Russian lady about the Longhorns.

I am continuously hit upon on social media by beautiful Asian 'ladies' who inexplicably want to meet a 65-year old man. I actually engage with them 'til they try to move the conversation to What's App, which is much harder to track than FB or Instagram.

I am guessing they are trying to set me up with a 'Pig Butchering' scam where they get you to invest on a fake crypto website until they drain all your money. Many of them are actually victims themselves, who live as slaves in compounds in Cambodia where they are beaten if they don't hit quotas.

And we all thought the internet was going to make the world a better place.

More power to Quinn. I hope he is really successful.
