….because Texas really wants him…..that’s why.

Texas really wants a lot of guys. I don’t see Tech in on them. This doesn’t make sense in the context of their class. Why not just put together a Top10 class?

I think there's some symbolism for Tech here. They get to say, "see all the interviews where Ojo said Texas told him he was their number one target? Well: 1) we beat him for this guy; 2) we can outbid them for whoever; and we're just as good as they are." Spoiler: 1) we bowed out because they made a stupid offer for a developmental prospect (admittedly one with an extremely high ceiling); 2) they can't; and 3) they are not now, never have been, and never will be as good as us at pretty much anything except maybe tumbleweeds and STDs per capita.

I will take all of this back if Ojo commits to UT tomorrow. In that case, he's clearly the second coming of Anthony Munoz, Orlando Pace, and Tony Boselli all rolled into one.

Maybe they've tried and didn't get any bites? I'm sure many recruits have a very high price to become a techtard and rightfully so.

Well, saw how they bought championships with Nija Canady, sooo... good luck to Ojo and Tech, I guess. Have fun developing by playing against the nation's best in... the Big XII

Edit: I'm also happy to see very few people actually freaking out about this - you really shouldn't. I understand the Ojo thing was kind of expected but still. I expected more people to lose their shit. Does anyone out there really, genuinely think we have a lower budget, House settlement and NIL, than Michigan, tOSU, TAMU, and freaking Tech? We just got a kid that Oregon considered a "must have."

I really think that, due to NIL and House shit, there will be more flips than ever this recruiting season as players are re-assessed during additional evals and senior seasons and offers are "amended." I also think that we're keeping a significant portion of our powder dry for guys we feel that we cannot afford to lose. Ojo, who has now received about 18 comparisons to Javonne Shepherd, clearly does not fit in that category. Go get that bag, young man - I don't blame you one bit. Maybe we circle back for Lamar Brown, Xavier Griffin, and/or Jalen Lott (though I doubt it for all of them except maybe Griffin, tbh). Remember when Tech tried to outbid us for Quinn Ewers and we dragged our sweaty, unwashed balls over their face?

But there will be flips and huge momentum shifts. Big ones.  Just ask Jonah Williams, Justus Terry, Kade Phillips, and Josiah Sharma. And some guy named Xavier Worthy

Don’t worry, there will be plenty of freaking out when he actually commits to tech.

Good God there is so much copium on this thread for the past week. Lots of people saying it's the long game, wait till December, we will have flips, use the portal, we'll just use the leftover money on the next guy, Ojo is overrated, other programs are cheating, guys like Ojo go to Tech to die, etc etc etc. The reality is that Sark and Co did not read the tea leaves well this cycle. Obviously we really wanted most of the guys that rejected us -- Henderson, Lee, Griffin, Edwards, Lott, Finley, and on and on. We have been in second place for about a dozen highly ranked guys. I mean I think Ojo is full of himself and is more of a developmental player than a Kelvin Banks clone, but he's the #1 fucking OL recruit in the country. You don't think that's a guy we should be upset at losing, when we were in the lead two days before his announcement? Guaranteed if he chose the good guys, this board would be crowing about landing him. And for good reason; Flood would make that guy a beast here.

Will we be okay in the long run? Who the hell knows. Recent history says yes, but recent history also said we'd have landed a good chunk of these second place finishes. Anyway, doom rant over, but honestly recruiting this cycle has been a fucking gut punch.

I’m agreed with y’all about Ojo, but shit talking the Big 12 just feels Aggie. The Big 12 champ took us to double overtime. And that ASU squad lost to Tech.

To be clear, Tech sucks and will always suck but they’re in the rearview along with the rest of that conference. I’m not going to badmouth the Big 12 any more than I would the ACC.

Personally, I would still be happy if Ojo were in the boat. Flood wants him and was willing to make him a decent offer, and that’s enough for me. But what I don’t want to do is overpay for a guy with a bad attitude and a long developmental curve. Take that money and give it to someone who is either more talented or willing to put in the work.

Basically, sounds like this dude is fat Micah Hudson. He should the money vaya con dios to Lubbock, because it doesn’t seem like he’s a good fit for our program.

Idgaf about the big 12. Never did

It’s also July 4. We haven’t lost shit, yet. Nor won anything. I’ll be extra concerned if deep into the season (when W-L records and funds are examined for legitimacy) we aren’t pulling in the players we need to continue to compete with the Georgias and Ohio States of the CFB world. I really like many of the recruits who have pledged a “commitment” so far, and if the season plays out like I expect it to, if the Texas checks continue to cash (they will) and if Simmons/Goosbys/etc develop as they should, our coaches will have a great sales pitch, likely far better than just about any program.

I contribute through the legitimate channels but that's not my point. I'm saying that many posters here continue to find creative ways to feel optimistic about a pretty shitty situation. Believe me, I hope like hell that we get some of these guys over the course of the fall. But to this point, recently losing out on top guys has sucked and it seems like it has caught our recruiting staff off guard. I don't think anyone here can say with a straight face that they feel really satisfied with the way things have gone over the past 2 weeks. That's all I'm saying.

Again, here's hoping that the staff is able to turn things around this fall. And fingers crossed for Turntine today.

It's July 3rd, my dude

I've got a calendar. The current roster construction calls for a big OL class this year. We lost Mills late and unexpectedly last year and threw a last minute Hail Mary at Fasusi. We've never gone to the portal at OL under Sark and Flood. All spring this thread was talking about taking as many as 6 and whether or not we'd have to turn away a guy like Zaden Krempin.

Last year, 21 of our 25 eventual signees visited during the big summer OV weekends. The year before 19/22. Those are the priority targets. This year at OL we brought in the two current commits, Turntine, Ojo (Tech), Lee (Michigan), Krempin (aggy), Roseborough (aggy). Let's be honest, Ojo and Lee will be difficult or impossible flips. We looked at guys like Evers and Katoa and said no thanks already. No luck (yet?) getting Pepe, Utu, or Greene to visit and they're all committed elsewhere now.

So yeah, you're absolutely right. It's July. No panic. But like, what's the fucking plan here? Anyone on this thread that says this is shaking out how they expected in April is a liar.

We're optimistic because this isn't the first cruel recruiting summer we've lived through and Texas ended up just fine at the end of the recruiting cycle. We're optimistic because we know it's the long game.

I, for one, am actually satisfied over the past two weeks because this is the nature of the game . Gnashing teeth and overreacting posts won't change the reality. Let these other schools "win" recruitments in the summer and if need be, let Texas come over the top when it matters the most.

Anyways, carry on as we return to our regular scheduled programming.

I'd love to see us get a few of the guys we've missed on. Some fellow bluebloods with money, elite brands and solid coaches would love to have a few of our commits. We hold these truths to be self-evident.

I follow Texas sports for enjoyment, not self-abuse, so I'll just hope things improve on the recruiting trail in the near future and try not to fret too much if they don't. Unlike most programs, we already have an amazing roster to protect.

I’m not a mathsamatician but shouldn’t we have a shit ton of NIL money leftover after we missed on all these guys? I only follow Ketch for recruiting news, but it seems like we thought a few of these guys were ours, which would cost us a ton of cash, so now what do we do with it? Treasury bonds? Pizza party?

The real concern here shouldn't be about Ojo or even this class as of July. The concern is that the paradigm has shifted and Texas appears to no longer be playing the same game as other schools. Before House settlement, Texas was the one doing the money-whipping. Now it seems to have reversed.

Several people on here/9.95ers supposedly in the know have alluded to some schools not stopping at the settlement cap through various means. Maybe the current admin/staff will be different but pre-NIL Texas liked to play by the books. That means going back a similar disadvantage Texas faced against bag gamers.

All that being said - I always believed the House Settlement would even the playing field in a negative way for Texas. Even if everyone were strictly compliant, the financial advantage Texas previously had is now much smaller on a relative basis.

A pizza party would be cool, but some of the guys we have committed weren't cheap:

Mikey Bukauskas, Jake Collett, and  Trott O'Neal were all rated at the top of their class. And we all know Mikeys, Jakes, and Trotts don't grow on trees on football rosters. Be happy and if all goes well, maybe just maybe we will have a little left over for Domino's on signing day. And remember while Domino's no longer offers a free pizza guarantee, some locations may offer other incentives for late deliveries.

So he’s an appropriately rated recruit now? Unless we don’t get him then overrated and got worked at rivals camp?

You act as if the posters in this thread had previously been hyping Ojo as some sort of next version of Banks. Maybe I missed that. You can go back pretty far in this thread and find references to guys we trust, like Gerry, not being as high on Ojo as the rankings would suggest.

It’s not going to be posters on this board who hammer Ojo from the #1 OL ranking to finishing somewhere in the national 150-ish overall range. Are you implying that when those rankings change that it’s a conspiracy among the ratings services? Or are you just too stupid to follow the logic knot you’re tying in some sort of pathetic effort to seem contrarian?

I haven’t followed this house settlement issue much, but does that mean a whole bunch of schools now have $20m to spend that they didn’t have before?

Each recent loss should be evaluated case by case. Some were for reasons other than nil primarily (Crowell, Griffin, Lee), others were because we were willingly outbid (Calicut).

With others the competing team went stupid overboard (Henderson, guervil, ojo) In these cases we wouldn’t have matched even in a pre-House world.

The sentiment I disagree most with is that House is a massive game changer and somehow we aren’t cheating hard enough. At the very most it’s causing programs to either have or think they have more money right now.

I don’t believe it’s impacting our ability to make competitive, responsible offers, in the least. But if others in the know disagree, I’m willing to listen.
