Yep. Just like Ronnie Reagan and his "Morning in America," expressed in that TV ad dripping with nostalgia for the "good ole days" ... flag waving, gettin' hitched young people, picket fences, small town Americana .... Going backward into a mythic yesteryear.

The entire Republican agenda is to get back to the 1950s culturally and the 1500s spiritually, in some dream world of an American capitalist theocracy under God. Before all that 1960s Leftist liberalism ... and hippies and sexual freedom ... and civli rights and gay rights and women's rights ... and taking prayer outta schools ... and ecology and environmentalism and ... NASA showing Earth as a tiny little planet floating in the cosmic void...

Before all that stuff, America was great. Just Like Ronnie said.

And you know--Biden could adopt that commercial damned near word-for-word next year, and it'd be accurate the way things are trending.

This Thanksgiving while we were eating turkey dinner, my sister told us a story about her recently trying a THC gummy she bought at a vape store. Apparently it didn't get her high but had the side effects of being high.

Then my other sister said you have to be careful of the gummies because she took too much in Colorado and ended getting stuck in a repeating circle at a Chik Fil A drive-thru. lol she doesn't know how long she was there but that's when it kicked in then she parked and freaked out for good while.

That story was finished with, "I only smoke weed now." Then told us about her and a cousin smoking joints on Lake Travis the prior week.

My dad just laughed with a "wtf" face.

ah yes, we should take totally seriously the admonition not to listen to celebrities from the people who elected an actor and a game show host to the presidency.

Reality game show host.  Otherwise, you're insulting Bob Barker, Alex Trebec and others (we'll ignore Chuck Woolery for a moment).

One ironical thing, though, is that you can draw a pretty straight line to "children of the 60s" and Trump voters, i.e. boomers.

And, it wasn't the liberal politics of the 60s, per se, but a lot of the self-seeking and self-regard of various non-political movements that have gotten us in something of a pickle as a country

Holy shit I’d love to be stuck at CFA while high. I’d slam an entire party tray of nugs

This is the part that I can't wrap my head around.  I grew up in the church.  I still consider myself a Christian.  But the hate spewed by others who claim the same faith really makes me sad and/or angry.  Jesus was all about love and serving others and these people are all about hate, and wanting to destroy others who look or act differently than they do.  But they wrap themselves in Christianity.  They go to church every Sunday and apparently do not listen to a word that is preached.  Or, even worse, they go to a church that preaches hate.

I'm unsure Christians have ever really lived up to their ideals.

They are unique that way...

Fair points.  Most followers of most organized faiths fall well short of their portended ideologies.  Christians aren't unique to that.  But they tend to be more obnoxious than most in their failings because the one thing they were told not to do, judge others, is like their main jam.

I was laughing about this with a Jewish friend of mine (he laughs that I conveniently mention my 1/4 Sephardic Jew blood only when it's beneficial to me) in Fort Worth over Thanksgiving.  He worries a lot about the Evangelicals kind of winding down in socio-political influence the last year or so.  They're torn between knowing they backed a complete heretical fraudster in the form of a man who couldn't name 3 books of the bible if there was a blowjob from his eldest daughter in it for him; and having to accept their movement is about one man, but that one man is Jesus Christ...not some asshole from Atlantic City.  But we laughed about evangelizing nothingness.  And why Jews don't do it.  The world, especially now yet again for the 137th time, vilifies Jews for spreading their filth and lies...when all the while...they're the one fucking major faith that doesn't actively evangelize or recruit or convert.  In fact, they're the opposite.  The whole platform is, "Nope, we're all set for membership.  You do you brother/sister..."  Even folks we know that marry into Judaism, the other spouse's family is of the opinion, "You're welcome to convert.  But honestly, it's more interesting if you don't.  Sangre por Sangre."  I told him that a couple of my cousins on my mom's side which is where our Sephardic blood is from, converted to full-on Judaism.  Some remained Catholic.  Some went the way of the Dad.  Some are agnostic.  It's a crapshoot.  But yeah, despite being one of the older and more powerful faiths around, there's a reason you don't hear Jews shouting from street corners that God is judging them for their sinful behavior and there is only one true path.  But my God, the Texas Evangelicals, can y'all shut the fuck up for two fucking seconds and let me worship in peace?  Even my Catholic in-laws at Thanksgiving admitted finally that they know none of their 4 sons-in-law with convert to their Church and they are totally at peace with it now.  Which is good.  One of us is a Lutheran Jew (me), one is Southern Baptist (but not practicing), one is non-denominational Vietnamese Christian, and one is non-denominational African American Christian.  And  because nobody is actively recruiting at the dinner table, we get along just swell except that I'm borderline legally insane.

It's something we should always strive for.  Seems like many don't really care about that, though.

I have commissioned an embroiderer to put the words “Posse Comitatus” on the breast pockets of my guayaberas so that I can attend family functions without acting like these are normal times. Events such as the upcoming memorial to my uncle, who was a veteran of the US Navy, and an honorable man.

We tend not to talk politics in our family at gatherings, but gotta admit I was sorely sorely gruntled when at a recent family memorial service one of the eulogies went completely political in the topic. It was by a family member of the in-laws to the deceased and those of us who were more direct relations were gritting our teeth at what heretofore had been a sad and reflective but honorable service to pay tribute to a good man. Just not the time or the place to cause a ruckus about it, but this guy could not would not read the room.

Sorry for your loss and regards for a peaceful goodbye to your loved one.

Thanks, Mrs Whiggins.

Maybe I should have mentioned my ICE agent cousin. He used to investigate child trafficking. Now he is on the hunt for immigrants. I texted him, remarking that he had joined the folks who separate kids from parents, but he had no reply.

I am a flaming liberal.   I haven’t changed at all, but I used to be a Rockefeller Republican.    Then that went the way of the dodo.

My political views are aligned with my only brother, so Thanksgiving is gonna be peaceful and drunken

It’s an easy strategy this year.

“Wow. So you voted for a pedophile three times?  Hilarious!  Maybe we should have left the kids at home this turkey day, amirite!?!?

 Just kidding!

but in all seriousness stay the fuck away from my children.”

My parents were up this weekend and politics was mostly avoided but we caught my dad use the word “DEI” a few times. Made us cringe each time. He fashions himself a moderate but he’s definitely 100% a pocketbook/country club Republican.

However, he is an improvement on my grandfather who would spend all weekend yelling at the n#%*ER’s and jig$”@?s playing football on his television set.

The biggest debate had better be whether someone wants pecan or pumpkin pie; a dilemma to which the answer is , "both."

Our crew does a pretty good job of not bringing it up, knowing there's a broad range of beliefs.  That and a couple of us will go nuclear in about 3 seconds, and I'll do it on either side of an issue.  Just don't fucking go there.  Let's get drunk and watch football...

I have a MAGA uncle who is on 100% disability due to being fat during Desert Storm when he was stationed in Saudi Arabia and hurting his knees and back. He continually sends letters to my place of employment (bank that he doesn't have an account with) addressed to our CEO because one of our locations in the Lubbock area has a flagpole that doesn't have a flag on it. I guess he just drives around Lubbock all day looking for flag code violations and other things to be mad about.

I survived my family Thanksgiving last weekend, brief as it was. Made sure to make some time with my sister and BIL on the patio to talk some shit with like-minded individuals, but left the politics away from the dinner table this time.

My wife did have a sit-down with my mom the day before to talk about how they can get along better outside of politics. My mother did go out of her way to point out how centrist is she is (she has voted for Trump 3 times, so still waiting on a "centrist" D, I guess). She also mentioned that she is pro-LGB, just not the T, and said that Charlie Kirk, who I am all but certain she was unaware of until his death, was a great guy.

Someone mentioned a while ago that they are treating their MAGA relationships in a completely transactional way. I'll take the free babysitting, while occasionally letting them know their beliefs are abhorrent. They appear to be a completely lost cause, so we will just not have a close relationship for the foreseeable future.

The next few days will be spent with my wife's family, which ranges from politically apathetic to somewhat liberal. An improvement at least.

At this point, I just laugh and mock them straight to their faces. If they get offended, that’s on them. What do you expect from people when you say stupid, horrible bullshit out loud? I’m supposed to sit here and pretend you’re not a fucking moron making a fool of yourself?

If they get so upset that it ruins the relationship, cool. Stupid is bad enough, but stupid and hypersensitive? Yeah we don’t need to spend time together. Life’s too short.

We had a chill Thanksgiving, probably because we had our “political” discussions over the last few weeks.

One, my anti-vaccine in-law started to say some bullshit at our nephew’s party whenever it came up that he had had some vaccines at his yearly checkup the week before.  My wife shut her down with “you don’t have kids, you’ve never had to make life-or-death decisions for kids, and you’re never going to have kids, so you keep on deciding not to give your non-existent kids vaccines and leave those of us with kids alone!”

The other, a boomer relative started to go on with some MAGA talking points about drugs and illegals in a conversation last weekend that featured neither of those, and I point blank asked him why we needed to invade Venezuela and why didn’t Trump release all of the Epstein files last spring, why do we need an act of Congress to get a chance at them, and why Trump is protecting pedophiles.  So yeah, it didn’t come up today. I was a dick, but I figured better to get it out last weekend.

I would hope more people would push back against relatives. And both my wife and I never brought up party affiliation or anything close to it, she was sticking to the fact that her relative never had to make such decisions so she has no history from which to pull from, and I made the boomer’s conversation all about Trump (he knows I was a Republican until the early 2000s).

 No politics today.

That was yesterday when drinking with the family.

Talks of illegals and raids came up which means we’ll end up Fox taking points and Pelosi this and Chicago that and …

So I just employee my tried and true strategy:

I just use Presidential and Vice presidential quotes in solidarity of their arguments and then the conversation gets shuts down for sounding ridiculous and hyperbolic

FIL: it’s a shame we have to do this, but with all these drugs and trafficking we have to do something.

Me: Yeah but if we allowed even the good ones to stay they’d still keep buying up houses and driving up the cost of owning a home.
BIL: OK, let’s not get into this ….

I’m not changing anyone’s mind so might as well kill the eventual argument in the crib.

This came up with my mom earlier this year, and she was going on about all of the problems with illegals and drugs and trafficking, and I mentioned that for a good 10-15 years, her lawn guy was here illegally, and she had her roof and siding redone by people she probably knew were here illegally (she never checked papers, and they all only took cash), and that if she really cared about the illegals, she'd stop giving them money to fund drug trafficking or whatever Trump claims they do with their money.

She hasn't mentioned them even one time around me since then.
