With him and Kraft, they’re well on their way to a sandwich.

This is underrated post!
Need a coach with last name Bacon. And it’s perfect combo.
Thought for sure they’d hire Vrabel. Wish Mayo and Kraft luck there. It’s less of a hard act to follow than Saban because Belichick has been bad since Brady left/exposed. Saban made the CFP. Almost made finals.

I dont know, it seems a bit redundant.

Figured they were going to pounce on Vrabel

Lots of chatter about Atlanta looking at Vrabel. But most teams now want some kind of offensive young genius. Everyone going younger. Mostly.

He kinda stinked at Tennessee

Pats are going to suck for a while, I don't think anyone can fully realize the Bill/Tom thing.

Tom carried the offense and Bill made sure the defense and team played a certain style. But Tom made sure the offense kept rolling within the tightest margins.

Probably not something we will ever see again that style.

Sandwich and gerbil jokes aside, is this not a WTF hire to anyone?  Is he just the fall guy destined to fail in replacing a legend and they'll do a real search in a couple of years?

"Bill, we're gonna need you to step aside, because we gotta get things rolling for our LB coach, who has never really been in charge of anything, but is waiting in the wings.  We think real highly of him."

Who the fuck was NE competing with in terms of hiring Mayo as HC? This seems like a very short sighted hire. I see some pain in NE future as their O sucks and they have no real front office infrastructure as BB has been leading that effort.

Maybe Kraft setting Mayo as fall guy/short term play so he can get good GM/FO in place to run team.

It is a roll of the dice for sure.  the guy following a legend is always in a precarious position.  If he does well it's huge upside, if he fails it is easy to cut bait.

brady left years ago, and he’s not the qb

he’s not following a legend

Definitely a risk hiring a HC who’s never even been a coordinator, but he’s been respected as a leader/future coach material since he came into the league, much like DeMeco Ryans. Not the greatest situation for a first timer replacing a dude with six titles; at the same time, it’s probably a better situation to walk into than whoever Carolina hires is going to inherit…

It's not like he's following Bill after their 2019 Super Bowl. He can't be any worse than the seasons they have had lately. Pats are now a bottom feeder.

Not sure. Patriots are pretty bare talent wise.

Now that Cal McNair has stopped following Jesus Easterby and letting his (apparently very capable) wife call the shots, Carolina has the worst owner in the league. OTOH, whatever you think of Kraft he has to be 100% on board with this, so you’ve got to think Mayo gets more patience with growing pains than he would from any other owner…

I don't know if teams were solely interested in interviewing Mayo just to check off the Rooney rule, but he did garner substantial interest in head coaching searches that he declined. New England has a bare cupboard, he'll have his hands full.
