It's been discussed already so won't go into that but finally drew up the courage to watch All Quiet On The Western Front. I'm not sure 'enjoy' is the correct word for the viewing experience unless I'm solely going off of the cinematography, acting, etc because it is, as many good war movies are, a gut wrenching experience but it needed to be seen.

Spoiler

The scene in the pit where Paul stabs the French soldier--my spouse and I had a discussion afterwards about the psychology when one kills someone with a knife in battle as it is so physically close to the victim. When juxtaposed to General Foch in his cozy and warm abode, enjoying his meals as he discussed the war, it made my heart ache. I read the book in high school, but they captured the moment of Paul's emotions well.

Finally got around to watching My Name Is Loh Kiwan, the Korean film starring Song Joong-ki (Vincenzo, Bogata: City Of The Lost, Space Sweepers) with supporting roles by Choi Sung-Eun (Start-up), Lee Sang-hee (Diary Of A Prosecutor, Love Scout), and Jo Han-chul (Vincenzo, Reborn Rich) among others.

Song plays a North Korean defector who lands in Brussels and through a chance encounter, begins to build a new life. It's violent and sometimes the plot seems a little far-fetched with respect to that chance encounter, but not bad.

Spoiler

I thought Song and Choi as the male and female leads performed well enough, but the writing was...I'm not sure of the terminology here--loose? The scenes that showed how lonely and desperate the life of a refugee/defector is were, in my opinion, some of the best scenes. Weaving that together with the female lead and her issues occasionally seemed forced but overall we enjoyed the movie although I freely admit I covered my eyes during some of the more violent scenes.

I need to have a word with Netflix, however. Although I do enjoy watching a lot of international films and series, with Korean, Indian, and Chinese origins being my favorites, the algorithm has decided that is ALL I watch and it's getting annoying. I watch many of the other shows that are listed here but don't always comment on them but the recs on the streaming platform seem to ignore the action/adventure movies, foodie shows, and documentaries I also watch.

just started this red sox thing, and tristan casas is out here quoting bull durham and acting like it’s his own, original thoughts. gay.

I started the series on horse racing but made it about 15 minutes.  I've never seen a more shallow and status obsessed group of people.  When even the jockey started humble bragging about how big his house was, I ejected.

That whole hard knocks formula type show doesn’t work for everything. I could see it working for baseball but they picked a terrible/most boring team to follow. It’s a complete flop, not even in the top 10 current shows I believe. The horse racing thing is even worse, imagine being a 5’2” man and thinking you’re cool.

I’d love last chance u to come back. That first season at Indy college was the most unhinged and raw season of reality TV I’ve ever seen.

Watching this horse racing this now. Simply for the douchebags. I love horses in that I think they are a majestic animal. But these jersey shore wanna be douchebags is the clusterfuck reason I’m watching

Watched UnBroken this weekend. Not the former Olympian Louis Zamperini, Unbroken, film but a documentary about the 7 Weber siblings who managed to survive WWII Germany after being helped and hidden by citizens. Short (around an hour and a half) it is directed by the daughter of the youngest sibling, who goes in search of how they lived and managed to immigrate to America.

Spoiler

The ending, where sticky notes spread on a table, displays the number of descendants of these 7 people. 72 lives affected by the willingness of a handful of citizens to shelter victims of persecution at the risk of all of their lives. Got a little teary-eyed.

Havoc is fucking incredible. The director of the Raid movies with a huge budget does not disappoint.

Tom hardy doing what he does best. Incredibly choreographed hand to hand combat, and everyone is a total badass.

Is it cartoonish? Yes, but it's a fun ride if you love action films.

I’m looking forward to Department Q which drops at the end of the month. British adaptation of a series of novels from a Danish author (I think there may have been a Danish production done a decade ago). It’s been likened to Broadchurch, which was fantastic.

Watched Blue Eye Samurai on a recommendation from a co-worker. Binged the goddamn thing pretty quickly. Beautiful show all the way around. Lots of tits and a nose dildo for those so inclined.

Episode 5 of Blue Eye Samurai is one of the best single episodes of a show (taken within context of the season) I’ve ever seen.

Props to everyone who recommended this one. It's not a genre I would've given a look otherwise and it has been very good (have watched 1-5 so far).

Just finish a second watch.

I didnt plan to, not sure why I did. But once it got going, it was balls to the wall slice and dice and the binge was complete, again

looking forward to another season

I’ve watched it twice myself. Wish we didn’t have to wait until 2026 for season two.

The Four Seasons was outstanding.

Was coming here to post that.  Eight episodes, all very funny and good pacing.  You could tell Tina Fey's writing was all over it.  Legitimately funny.

Kind of a Big Chill for Gen X vibe.  Really liked this show.

Agreed. Am skeptical of anything recommended by the wife, but this was good.

I thought it was really bad. Every character seemed miserable in their own unique way and they wasted most of the talent they assembled in the cast. I did laugh hard at the daughter’s play and candle in the wind but that’s about it.

I’m 50 and saw myself in every single one of those characters.

I’m not sure what to make of The Four Seasons. I like everyone involved, but something seems off. Still watching though through 1.5 seasons.

My wife made the comment it felt like they had a bingo card of characters and situations and the writers were trying to play black out.

We never really could connect with the characters.

I suppose it says a lot about me that the only character I connected with was Steve Carrel's.  And they really should include watching this series in any premarital counseling because it reminded me exactly how hard marriage was.

Agreed, marriage is hard, but so is any relationship or friendship.

People change, things in their lives changes, and I think a big key is whether and how you go through those changes separately or together.

As far as saying it says a lot about you I wouldn't view that negatively,  I found most of the people whiny and needing to grow up, but I guess I am just old and cynical.

I really liked Nick, Annie (reminded me of my mom after the divorce) and Danny and Claude. I know and have many relationships like Danny and Kate, so I liked that

Kate was kind of a bitch the whole time and Jack was so annoying as a person. I would have killed him

Ginny was good comedic relief against the 40/50 something group. But her friend group was more Gen Z than 30-something millennials. That part was awful.

Summer was my favorite, then fall (omg the play), then spring and finally winter

Also Tina Fey 99.9% of the time plays a character I too strongly relate to. When Danny tells her “your face is so loud!“ I felt attacked

Finally watched Narcos (first season only). Very meh. Started second season, couldn't make it through the first episode.

I think if they had done away with the narration, it would have been a lot better.

So, I recommend you do not watch it.

Is this a joke?

Remembered the part i hated most, when he was trying to get Kate to go back to the inn during fall for some sexy time and he's like "i have a sour stomach"

Yeah, that's real sexy there, dude.

Speaking of Steve Carrel being in The Four Seasons, I am so pleased that Crazy Stupid Love is still on Netflix because there is not a number of times that is too many for watching it. I watched it yet again this weekend and the fight scene and the shopping with Ryan Gosling still completely crack me up.

I could've done without all the slow motion during shootouts but other than that I thought it was pretty damn good.

Exactly. Take it for what it is: over the top action

And an utter inability to ever run out of rounds with endless Rambo magazines that magically replenish themselves.....

I just don’t really like any of the characters. Take Will Forte. He’s one of my most favorite people on the planet but his character is annoying and unfunny.

But, still watching.
