Your Top Five Sports Movies

Recommended Posts

Give me your top five sports movies of all time, whether drama, comedy, etc.

1.  Bull Durham

2. Hoosiers

3. Rocky

4. Field of Dreams

5. Major League

The No. 5 spot has others that I could easily substitute.  But Major League is such a great movie that I've been quoting since I saw it in the theater as a teenager.  And Bob Uecker was like the rug that tied that movie together.

[I wanted a separate discussion apart from the Rudy love/hate on other thread.]

5. Major League

Honorable mention: Slap Shot, Brian's Song, Ford Vs Ferrari, Remember the Titans, Days of Thunder, Bull Durham, Varsity Blues

Varies by mood and if I'm into a sports movie for sports, a documentary or a "sports-tinged" storyline.

1) Any 2005 National Championship documentary, seen or unseen, and any clips or gifs from said season.

2) Field of Dreams

3) Rocky

4) The Wrestler

5) Miracle

Some of the movies y'all list are about as "sports" related as The Godfather Part 2, there's some fishing in there.

A very disturbing lack of Slap Shot representation on these lists. Y'all motherfuckers need Jesus. (Yes, I am dying on this hill.)

Need to watch it again, it's been moons since I have.

Not in a true ranked order but all ones I'll watch anytime:

1. Bad News Bears (original)

2. Major League and Bull Durham

3. Breaking Away

4. Slap Shot

5. Moneyball

Also hard to leave off: Hoosiers, The Sandlot, The Replacements, A League of Their Own, Rocky, Ford vs. Ferrari (finally saw this and loved it), Bend It Like Beckham, Chariots of Fire, McFarland USA, Cinderella Man. I may have gone a little overboard cause I can think of a lot I really like.

25 posts before any mention of Chariots of Fire?

WTF?

1. Rocky

2. Miracle

3. The Sandlot

4. The Love of the Game

5. Goon

"If we played 'em ten times, they might win nine. But not this time. Not tonight. Tonight, we skate with them. Tonight, we are the greatest hockey team in the world" makes me want to run through a brick wall.

1. Field of Dreams

2. Moneyball

3. Hoosiers

4. Rocky

5. Caddyshack

By my criteria it has to be primarily a sports movie to qualify. Big Lebowski and Talledega Nights and others don’t count. Those are comedies primarily, sports secondary.

This list is perfection.  I just violated my own rule

Moneyball has shot up my list of late, stop and watch whenever I catch it on.

three I didn't consider when making my earlier list. Any of these might could replace Rocky on my list.

  1. Raging Bull
  2. Rocky
  3. Moneyball
  4. Major League
  5. Kingpin
Honorable Mention Because the are not directly about "Sports":
  • Color of Money
  • Caddy Shack
  • Big Lebowski

The Hustler is a way better movie than Color of Money.

Lots of great movies listed in thread, very few I disagree with. I am glad we haven’t seen the dreaded “sport not a sport” painful essay come up.
