I'm curious what a "good faith" position could possibly be in support of what's happening right now. What's a legitimate good faith reponse to "Donald Trump says Harvard can no longer enroll International students and will deport all current International students." Or "Trump lies to South African President's face about white genocide with false photographs." What about the merits of whether habeus corpus means the president can deport anyone for any reason? Even with immigration policy where there can be legitimate debate on how to manage the influx of persons from Mexico and Central America, how can a discussion be held when their opening position is a blatant lie about Biden having an "open border" and that immigrants are all rapists and murderers? There aren't any more William F. Buckleys left just Ted Cruz and MTG saying nonsense and lies. About the best I can come up with is Rand Paul who has at least seemed to stay consistent on opposing spending and deficits even if it means criticizing the current administration. If Surly and Texags were one website do you think the conversations would be legitimate debates? I just don't see it. I'm with you in being sad about it but I don't see Surly being an "echo chamber" when the majority here is just speaking truth (or at least political truths within reason) while everything else is just blatant lies and hatred for libs and "others."

Let me preface this by saying nothing you said here is wrong Stache.

So I have the pleasure of having a father in law who mainlines Fox. Shit is always on in the background. So I hear the stuff they broadcast. They either don't cover the things you outlined or spin whatever is "spinnable". Now my father in law is highly educated, and so the worst kind of Republican. However, the majority of people out there have no idea what the law actually says. They DO think the president has the power to make decisions. They are told that the judges are wrongly prohibiting the President's ability to do his job and get these filthy criminals and rapists out of OUR country. They WEREN'T paying attention in Civics class. When you have dialogue with them this is completely obvious. So if we aren't having any dialogue with them, they have no education of the subject matter, and their go to source for information is lying to them, how are they to learn? It is absolutely exhausting to engage them in conversation, but it must be done.

The general consensus here is that Dems mustn't concede online spaces, and we are critical of them for not fighting the good fight. Yet here we are unwilling to take on difficult dialogue with right wingers in our own lives. The fight starts at the grass roots level. We need to be willing to not neg bomb anyone coming here with a difference of opinion because that discourages discourse.

And, let's face it, high school civics or government doesn't really cover advanced constitutional topics like separation of powers in any detail.

Lucky to get much of that at the college level, much less have it stick.

Unless you have sufficient curiosity to dive a little deeper as to how things work or are supposed to work, the facile narratives about "courts bad" work, even when the judges are Trump appointees.

Fox provides none of that insight, and neither does any of the social media news or analysis.  I think the "MSM" is a bit better about that, for the non-MAGAt, but it don't make a shit.

Anyone going to bet against this?

He's exactly who America voted for.  There a few in America who are move situated to fuck things up like he is.

The "he's elderly and being taken advantage of" has the double danger of a) reminding Americans who the Dems protected last cycle and b) blames the problems on stupidty/age/etc.

(Or you're just being sarcastic and I'm missing the sarcasm.)

Generally, it would be a good thing if we had adequate manufacturing infrastructure and a skilled enough pool of workers to support manufacturing complex technological components in America, but we don't. This is kind of part of why we're so fucking stupid as a nation nowadays, because we only manufacture guns and cars and no one gives a shit enough to learn anything else.

Counterpoint: they are too far gone.  This country has had ignorant pieces of shit who are too far gone for much of its history.  We are at our best when we shame them, make them socially unacceptable, and force them back under the rock where they belong.

You cannot reason someone out of a position they didn't reason themselves into.  So, treat them like the plague that they are: isolate them, so they can do minimal harm to the rest of us.  And if that means walling off most of SEC country, fucking do it.  You cannot defeat stupid.  It is immune to all weapons except brutality -- social brutality etc.

I try my best to imagine the perspective from other cultures. I think about how it must feel to see minorities be able to proclaim ethnic pride while white people have to sit that one out.

Ethnic pride is pretty idiotic.

Black pride got started because the Black population had been denigrated and oppressed for so long that many longed to be anything but Black. Black Pride was a remedy for a real problem and did  lot of good.

White pride or Asian pride or Irish pride (other than as whimsy) do not equate. With every good occurence, stupid occurences follow.

Okay cool. Let’s have a non echo chamber discussion. Let’s start with two recent issues.

(A) It’s bad foreign relations for Trump to falsely accuse the South African president of white genocide by confronting him with photographs that aren’t of South Africa or white genocide.

(B) Noem was wrong when she said that habeus corpus means the president can deport anyone for any reason.

Response?

Trump has zero concept of the manufacturing scale in the far east, not to mention how long it would take to develop the capacity to build iPhones here in the US.  The end result (if he stuck to his threat, which he never does for long) would be a price hike on iPhones for several years and then Apple pockets the rolled back tariff w/o rolling back prices.

Played golf with my MAGA buddy yesterday, we got paired up with a couple of really nice guys in their 60s, one went to Texas the other was an Aggie, who both seemed to be Trump guys as well.

The only time politics were brought up is when the Horn said he read Tapper's book about Biden and recommended it to all of us. Talking about how out of it Joe Biden was and wondering who was really "pulling the strings". He said he actually didn't mind Biden throughout the years, that he was a "centrist" but seemed upset about all of the progressive things that happened during his presidential administration and that other people had to be in control. Interesting that Trump didn't really come at all.

I liked the guy. He was super knowledgable about all Texas sports and walked on the football team back in the late 70s/early 80s. Shit, maybe he lurks/posts on here. But I guess it's bad policy to try and help people in need. Oh well. We're fucked.

A lot of the reporting of the parade seems like it was going down anyway because of the Army's 250th "birthday."

Trump is trying to glom onto it for his own birthday, but it seems the Army is having none of it.
