I like the idea.  A 3% shortfall on Christmas is a huge deal most years.  Crank that to 10%?  It would be brutal.

Unfortunately, it would cause a massive amount of collateral damage and wouldn't affect the main targets one bit.

Not everyone should have disposable income.  Many people should not.   Should work like a bankruptcy case.  If you want to take taxpayer money from Government (loan payoffs, welfare, etc...), disclose to the government your financial situation.  A trustee/receiver should approve all of your spending requests until you no longer need government $$.  No more Starbucks, alcohol, cigarettes, entertainment, hair dos, etc....

Fuck all that, the administrative cost would be ridiculous. Just bring back debtors’ prisons and workhouses. We’re already bringing back child labor

There are homes in Dallas that cost $1000/sf or more so that isn't an immediate red flag to me

The ground they sit on is figured into that price.

there is no cost of the real estate. Would those Dallas homes cost $1000 per sq ft to knock down and rebuild?

You ignorant piece of shit.  ALL THAT YOU ARE is a consumer of Starbucks, cigs, entertainment, all of it.  It is your sole purpose for existence, and the only value you bring to society.  You are a resource, from which dollars are to be extracted.  That's it, full stop.  You have no rights, you have no independent dignity or value, other than the value you can deliver to the captive corporate machine.  And yes, the irony is that much of that is circular (the government extracts tax dollars, distributes them to people and enterprises, so those people and enterprises can spend them on goods and services to enrich oligarchs).  See any echoes of that in the current AI investment infrastructure, where outfits like Nvidia are financing enterprises that will purchase their chips?  Hmmmmm.....wonder where they got that model?

Stop thinking that we the people have any agency or value in this system.  We are simultaneously the product from which value should be extracted, and cost-centers that should be eliminated.  The irreconcilable tension between those two things has injected insanity into the system, and it's breaking down.  But that doesn't matter.  Profit must be made until the last piece of rubble hits the ground.

And you go along with it.  Because you blame the people who don't have a pot to piss in, instead of the people who built and control the whole fucking system.  You fucking idiot.

Great points.  Ill bow out of discussion.  We should just do the level-headed thing instead.  Boycott Christmas.

I remember being a poor college kid and that being my life.   Going out meant knowing where the cheapest happy hour drinks were and making sure it was a Mexican place so the chips and salsa were free.  And only doing that maybe 2-3 times a month.   Never going on Spring Break during the 5 years I was in school because I couldn't afford it and would work the extra hours that week because I was off from school.   Picking up holiday shifts and working Christmas, Thanksgiving and NY's day because they paid time and half.

That's the reality for most people in this country not the bubble that we live in here.

Yeah, how does anyone anywhere else do it!

There are phones that exist outside the ecosystem and Linux has been a thing for a long time, it's so good you wouldn't miss anything from either windows or Mac OS now.

You don't need MSFT office, you can have your own online productivity suite etc. All of this exists for you not to use these companies its just effort and not go to store with your brain off and do it.

it's a soviet control and now putinist tactic, the "Firehose of Falsehoods" (here's some reading from RAND describing it if you care) is extremely effective in the GOP and with MAGA voters.

If you flood the zone with bullshit, it's enough of a smokescreen to hide the rest of your malfeasance and give you cover for your true acts that are extremely antisocial

HED: Donald Trump Jr.’s Drone Ventures Could Make a Killing — Thanks to Dad’s Big Beautiful Budget

SUB: After Trump was reelected, his son took stakes in several drone companies. They’re now raising ethics concerns.

NUTSHELL: Drone company affiliated with Don Jr just earned a big government contract. He will make millions.

I think it would have an impact. It would be a lot more effective than the No Kings protests. The flip side is it is not well-executed, and the left just makes themselves more miserable than they already are.

I don't think we are to the point where a general strike would be something almost anybody would go for.  It's going to take something more visually horrific to move people to take that up and risk it all in any way.  That said, from a purely math is math standpoint.  The run-up below and those numbers brought the economy to its knees for a time.  I talk to a lot of people who still think that something like 25-50% of Americans were behind on their mortgage payments during the Great Recession, without realizing that, generally, the number wasn't anywhere close to that.  Numbers are big and scary, and it doesn't take much percentage-wise to get things moving in the wrong direction and right quick.

If 10-20% of folks start sitting things out (and yes get laid off and consequently no longer spend, pay taxes to service our enormous debt etc, etc etc), it would get ugly in a hurry.

image.thumb.png.c326a82513220a2cdb836aec0d104e2d.png

Or here is another one.  That shows it doesn't take much.  14.8% was peak unemployment during Covid and for a lot of businesses, investors and the government that was some shaky ass uncertain times for a bit.

You seem new around here so I’m willing to give you the benefit of the doubt that you are arguing in good faith.

let’s forget for a moment the idea that one duty of a free society is to care for its most vulnerable, and government is the instrument through which a society acts, because you may not disagree with one or both premises.

If you completely eliminated all federal Medicaid and Snap spending you would save about 640B per year. Sounds like a lot right? It’s 10% of the budget.  Not peanuts but really not much in the grand scheme.

Now realize simply allowing the Trump tax cuts to expire would have added at least 400B to revenues. Take it back to pre W levels it would be more like 600B

So right there you almost have a wash. Even assuming you think we have no duty to help those people who have made terrible life choices such as being born into single parent households, it’s not costing much in terms of additional debt to throw them a few crumbs

But now look at what cutting SNAP and Medicaid entirely does to the broader economy

Due to multipliers, that loss of 680B translates into a conservative estimate of a loss of 2-3% to GDP in the first year

Doesn’t seem like much until you think of how it actually plays out. Job losses and business closures will be mostly in the healthcare sector, and they will disproportionately affect people who live outside dense metropolitan areas. And of course it will also affect food producers. Now the powers that be aren’t cutting 100%. Yet. But they are cutting enough, along with ending ACA subsidies, that there will be a large ripple effect

But I guess if you’re a “me and mine” type, and you have 100% employer funded health insurance, and  if you don’t derive your livelihood from the above industries or the industries that support them (retail, finance, housing, service industry, etc) and if you live in or near a big city (assuming you can stand being in one of those likely commie infested areas), you probably won’t feel much pain.  Probably.

Or when those same types want to solve the homeless problem by "just round them up and throw them in jail".

Incarcerating an individual costs, on average, about $60k/yr. But they'd rather spend that money locking them away rather than spending a fraction of that on mental/drug/alcohol treatment and a housing/food stipend which would provide a much greater chance of them living productive, fulfilling lives.

That 1000/sqft usually also includes the dirt, not just the construction cost, and in most cases, the dirt is half of that.

Schutze is right more often than he's wrong.

The $/sf doesn't raise too many alarms for me.  We aren't talking about a hotel.  The facility will need to have security measures that will drive up the cost.  That's not just bullet proof glass and reinforced doors; it's supply chain requirements similar to military projects, which is where you wind up with $300 hammers.  You can't buy light fixtures that might have bugs in them. Ask the Palestinians about buying pagers. I have no idea what it should cost, but 3-5x doesn't seem crazy in the context of secure government projects.  I would imagine they would follow similar construction to embassy builds, but with it being private money, they might look to avoid that red tape.  Who the fuck knows.  They are insane and there is nothing about this that seems planned out.

The comments on the inconsistent renderings is definitely interesting.  Maybe the ballroom is one floor with working space above or below.  Or maybe they just typed some prompts into ChatGPT to get renderings.  Again, who the fuck knows.  But they really should have had the basic design agreed to before doing the demo.
