Two things that stood out to me other than all the "OR".

1. Marcel Reed only gained 5lbs over the off season. He was listed at 180lbs last year. Now he's 185lbs, and that might be rounded up. Not a great place to be for a running QB in an offense that runs the QB.

2. They only have 4 DTs that aren't true freshmen, and of those the biggest is listed at only 317lbs. Texas has 4 DTs bigger than 317lbs.

This is their 3rd string QB.  Just a heartbeat from the next Aggie messiah. Reed will be discarded by game 4 and start portal paperwork. This guy will instantly become the most popular guy on the team.

I'm sure he'll find himself someday. At GaTech, Kentucky, or UH

If you were a cliff notes student back in the day, I can save you a shit ton of time.  "In 2025 A&M will show early flashes of hope before letdown and disappointment.  All while carrying the cost of an extra head coach's salary, who they had prior flashes of hope from!"

Then just change the year annually....

It's prediction time. GigEm247 staff members Jeff Tarpley, Carter Karels and Andrew Hattersley are ready to project what they think will happen when No. 19 Texas A&M clashes with UTSA at home Saturday in Kyle Field (6 p.m. on ESPN).

As of Thursday afternoon, BetOnline Sportsbook has the Aggies as a 24.5-point betting favorite over the Roadrunners. The over/under scoring total is at 56.5. Here is how we think the game will go, along with a score prediction.

    Jeff Tarpley

Texas A&M brings back most of its 2024 team while UTSA lost its entire defense but still wants to take chances on that side of the ball (which translates to more big plays and points than you would normally expect). In addition, this is a program that didn't play very well away from home.

On the surface, this sets the contest up to be a mismatch, but it's the first game of the season, which usually leads to miscues on both sides and may enable UTSA to stay in the game for a while … but not long enough.

    Score prediction: Texas A&M 45, UTSA 20.

    Carter Karels

Season openers can be a mirage, but I expect this game to set the tone for what to expect from the Aggies in 2025. There are plenty of reasons to feel more optimistic about their offense than their defense this fall, and it should show up vs. the Roadrunners.

With its new-look defense, UTSA will probably struggle to contain A&M, particularly its vaunted ground game and improved wide receiver unit. But for the Aggie defense, which enters the season with a lot of questions, their showing likely will not be nearly as strong. The Roadrunners should have one of the better offenses in the American Athletic Conference, making them a challenge.

    Score prediction: Texas A&M 41, UTSA 17.

    Andrew Hattersley

Openers are always tricky as Mike Elko outlined during his Monday media availability, especially with UTSA featuring 11 new starters on the defensive side of the ball. That could pose some challenges for A&M early on, but as the Aggies make adjustments, I expect Marcel Reed and Co. to be able to move the ball and get rolling offensively. A&M certainly went through some inconsistent play last year with new faces on the defensive side of the ball, and the Roadrunners will have to deal with this as well.

I do expect UTSA to be able to move the ball at times, though I don't think it will be enough to keep up with A&M. Though this game could be closer than anticipated in the first half, I expect the Aggies to pull away down the stretch for a relatively comfortable win.

    Score prediction: Texas A&M 38, UTSA 14.

Fantastic

Now I feel even better about taking UTSA +24.5 - Birds Up!

i suspect the first half is close, we laugh at eggy and we get blue balled by the end. but it'll be a game that pleases no one at A&M , and still a non zero chance UTSA does the funniest thing

Like 2022 when UTSA went up 17-7 on us in the 2nd Q and it was tied at half time?

that was a fun time.

Sounds perfect for aggy since that Texas team went 8-5.

Oof I didn't know UTSA was returning zero starters from last year's team on defense.  I was confidant in them covering base on their offensive production.  Now I'm having serious pause.

Have you watched that game yet?  I thought they looked exactly as a 6-6 to 8-4 team would look. It’s going to be grim there on the defensive end. They aren’t stopping anyone quality. Offensively I don’t see them scoring against good D’s.

Reed looked much better than he did against air in camp. Admittedly, UTSA’s D is just a step above air, but still.

@SydneyCarton, two of our other UT buddies and an aggie buddy watched a bunch of games on multiple tvs throughout the day on Saturday. Saturday evening we had ATM, OU and LSU/Clemson all on at the same time, and others. The funniest one, far and away, was the OU game because of how bad OU looked against an FCS team.

In the ATM game, I was surprised that Craver looked as good as he did. I knew he was fast, but he jumped off the screen a couple of times. Watching Owens get the longest run of his career was funny. But yeah, that ATM defense is really bad. They're going to lose plenty of games this season.

we have retards on here calling 9-3 our ceiling for the year but OU and aggy (realistic ones) have to feel about like chuckles the clowns second season at Texas bad.

Here's a breakdown of concerns from Tarp. I think it's a good article and he touches on some things that would scare me if ATM was my team. He doesn't really address stupid penalties, but those were also a thing last year and again on Saturday night. The Elko is considered a disciplinarian in ATM circles, and I've yet to understand why they think that.

Highlights:

-ATM can't run the ball well and hasn't since the middle of last year.

-ATM can't stop the opponent's running game and hasn't since the middle of last year.

-The DL was getting blown off of the ball in the first half of the game and the LBs and Safeties weren't showing up to help out.

-Klein wants to throw the ball and deemphasize the running game, allegedly. I wonder how this is going to work out next week in South Bend with ND coming off of a bye week?

    - I'll have a couple of more detailed items on the game early in the week, but this isn't a contest that is going to spark much interest among Aggies' fans. Utah State went 11-3 in 2021 and since then they have been about a .500 G5 outfit at best. They've struggled to stop anyone over the last few years on defense and quarterback Bryson Barnes has a lot of experience (fifth year senior) but not a lot of success. They've ranked higher than tenth in the Mountain West in rush defense just once since 2021.

Overall, this should be another entertaining weekend for A&M fans so we will concern ourselves more with what we saw in the opener and then in the weeks ahead.

    - UTSA came into Kyle Field, had zero turnovers, just two flags, and out rushed A&M by nearly 100 yards. They had an experienced quarterback which helped them overcome communication and poise issues on offense (the same types of issues the Roadrunners had on a defense with 11 new starters when they didn't pick up receivers).

Playing on the road really wasn't the factor that it should have been for an opponent.

    - A&M is now ranked 15th in the Southeastern Conference in rushing defense and 13th in rushing offense. They're 15th in average per rush on first down. They held the ball for 26:19 which is 14th in the SEC. They're last in sacks.

Here's their rushing offense over the last five games: 144, 209 (New Mexico State), 167, 98, 151, 108

    Here is the rushing defense: 286, 122 (New Mexico State), 168, 240, 105, 203.

    Run fits remain an issue.

They're getting farther and farther away from the formula that they used to start the 2024 season 7-1 and get into the top ten.

    - UTSA didn't really try to get physical with A&M wideouts in terms of pressing them. UTSA blitzed about 40% of the time and since they didn't get there (one batted ball in over 40 drop backs) they had major issues even playing their assignments, much less interdicting their routes once they came off of the line of scrimmage. It's not a big receiving group and so it will be interesting to see what happens when that occurs.

    - We watched about half of A&M's opponents open versus Power Four programs and so we have a better idea of what those schools look like. They all played better run defense and a more physical brand of ball on both lines of scrimmage, even in their losses. Their quarterbacks weren't great throwing the ball but for the most part they didn't put their teams in big holes with multiple turnovers despite playing in hostile environments.

    - I didn't know what to expect out of Texas quarterback Arch Manning and kind of punted on the topic most of the time in the off season. On the surface, he seemed to be incredibly overhyped (Warby Parker anyone?), he didn't have many career snaps and throws coming into the season, and sure enough his game one performance on the road versus a top five opponent was lacking.

There is no substitute for game reps and throws. Look at the guys across the SEC that have about a season's worth of starts under their belts (guys that didn't get that experience had under 60% completion rates on opening weekend and three of them were five stars in the 247 Sports Composite).

However….Texas still ran for more than two yards a carry than it allowed in the Horseshoe. This I didn't expect.

    - Does A&M want to be in the position in 2025 where it's more passing game centric than most of its SEC opponents, especially when it goes on the road?

Marcel Reed, his protection, and his wideouts may be able to make that work in some circumstances. He is a very good game manager and distributor (zero turnover worthy plays per Pro Football Focus) and they're going to generate big plays due to the combination of his decision making and the athleticism of the folks he is throwing to.

Eventually, you would think that the offensive line and backs should come around and that A&M's back seven would get better.

But if A&M wants to be a playoff team, either those things have to happen or the Aggies have to learn to win shootouts with the passing game operating at a high level in hostile climates.

It's amazing how he notes that UTSA shit all over themselves defensively leaving their small WRs wide fucking open, then says the passing game is going to have to win games. I didn't see the whole game, but I did see enough deep balls to wide open WRs (DBs not even in the picture open) that went INC because the QB's accuracy is abysmal.

He was quite a bit more accurate than he was vs. air over the summer.  So they have that going for them.  Which is nice.

I didn't see much of the game but did flip over just in time to catch the one deep shot Marcel missed (overthrow) when there wasn't a defender within 20 yards.  I saw that on college football final "bottom plays" or whatever the next day as well.

Are these guys incapable of writing an article without a Texas blurb in it? The Arch comment had no connection to the rest of the article. It is the ultimate game of diversion that these rubes fall for every time.

Here is an unintentionally hilarious article from Tarp on ATM's output facing top 10 teams on the road over the past 50 years.

Highlights:

-They've won 4 games on the road versus top 10 opponents since 1975. PSU in 1979 (PSU finished 8-4), Bama in 2012 with Manziel (Bama repeated for the title that season), South Carolina in 2014 (they finished unranked, 7-6) and Auburn 2014 (finished 8-5). That's it. That's the list.

-He talks about the problem usually partly being ATM's own internal foibles leading to their demise, which is surprisingly self-aware.

-He sounds closer to cutting himself than normal before a big game. I heard Liucci on SEC radio this morning talking about ATM surprising the country with a comfortable win tomorrow, so these folks are all over the map right now.

Taking a look at Texas A&M's history against top ten teams on the road

Texas A&M plays top ten Notre Dame on national television this Saturday night and so posters on our message boards this week eventually went into discussions on the last time that A&M went on the road to beat a top ten program. In 2014, the Aggies went to South Carolina and also to Auburn, and won over teams that were ranked in the top ten at the time of those two games.

These are the Aggies' last wins in true road environments where they were the visitors (as opposed to games at neutral sites or bowl games).

However, in addition to covering A&M football for a quarter century, I've followed it for another quarter century on top of that. I started to rack my brain for the times that the Aggies had beaten top ten opponents during those 50 years and in the end discerned that there while there hadn't any since 2014, there weren't many before that either.

The first time that I could remember was a game I listened to on the radio in 1979 when a 0-2 A&M team went to Penn State as a heavy underdog to the sixth ranked Nittany Lions (an outfit that had played for a national title the year before). A&M fell behind 7-0 before Curtis Dickey ran for a 69 yard touchdown which started a 27-0 run by the Aggies. He had 184 yards on the ground and A&M came away with a 27-14 upset.

After that came the historic Johnny Manziel-led win over number one ranked, defending, and eventual national title winner Alabama in 2012 that sealed the Heisman Trophy for him. Then came the two wins in 2014….

    …and I think that's been it.

That's kind of astounding if you think about it (especially given A&M's success in the 1980's and 1990's when they had multiple conference titles and top ten finishes). However, A&M didn't even play that many top ten teams during the first half of my lifetime (it was rare given the dominance of a few teams in each conference back in the day which meant you might get one of them a year) combined with the Aggies' lack of success in the post-World War II era (three conference titles in the first 40 years after the war ended). There simply wasn't a history of institutional success that they could turn to in big game moments. In addition, they didn't play before a lot of big crowds in a Southwest Conference that had a number of smaller private schools or even in the Big 12 days in 50,000 to 60,000 seat stadiums.

Thus, despite having highly ranked teams themselves, they were truly a program that couldn't win the big game, usually because it was played on the road, and even when that opponent wasn't ranked in the top ten. Beating top 25 teams was problematic so winning games versus top ten teams was a really tall order.

Even more surprising, the Aggies haven't had much success in the last decade even though they should be more used to playing great teams with loud crowds with a lot of buildup before the game. The SEC hasn't made them more adept at doing so despite their early success in the first three years after they joined the league. It hasn't helped that other than 2012 and 2020 the Aggies haven't fielded many "great" teams but the teams that won those games over top ten teams weren't great themselves (they finished 6-5 in 1979 and 8-5 in 2014).

Not only that, of their four wins over top ten foes on the road in my lifetime, only the Tide finished in the top ten. The rest wound up losing at least four games and being somewhat overrated.

It's hard to say that 2025 Notre Dame…A&M's latest attempt at beating a top ten program on the road….is as good as the team that beat the Aggies in 2024 and went to the national title game given their personnel losses from last year. We could just default to saying that A&M is "due" to win another game like this (and the more often you play in these games, the odds of you winning one should increase).

However, the Aggies always wind up playing themselves as much as they are the opponent. That's been the biggest struggle of all. Despite an ever changing cast of players and coaches, it's been the constant in their big game issues versus top ten opponents over the years. Too many bad starts and turnovers often put A&M in a hole that they can't climb out of even when they match the intensity of the venue they're playing in.

Thus, A&M has to be prepared mentally and emotionally to play with poise and physicality, something that has escaped A&M teams on the road in past seasons (even against the 2024 Auburns of the world). They have to make good things happen to them early on and at worst keep it a one score game so that the superior experience of quarterback Marcel Reed (versus Notre Dame counterpart CJ Carr) can its presence felt late in the contest.

Given the rest of their road schedule in 2025, beating the Irish might not have the carryover effect you would assume as every week in college football is different.

But if they ever want the program to live up to the lofty expectations that have been a part of Aggieland for 50 years, winning on Saturday night might be a good starting point.

They have a lot of speed on offense (more than us) but their defense appears to be wet paper baggy.  It’s true that anything could happen in this game.  A thumping either way is on the table.  I think a lot depends on how cute Denbrock or whatever his name is gets.  Run the ball early and often and ND will prolly win.

Hell, UTSA's o-line was pushing the aggies around. Freeman will know what to do.

In Notre Dame's new logo, fists are down and football is in

I think likely Domer wins comfortably but kind of pulling for A&M.   A ND loss should knock them out of the playoff picture no matter what happens the rest of the season with their shit schedule, and for Aggy, the fall is always funnier once the rollercoaster gets high. And they will be convinced they might just win it all if they could pull it out.

You probably have the right perspective on this, but I just can't find myself pulling for A&M. Or for Notre Dame either for that matter. Rooting hard for the earthquake.

@Rimbo is 100% rooting for a&m because he is terrified of a winning ND program. Yall just don’t understand, a winning ND program is unstoppable.

Notre Dame in the playoffs is 100 times better than aggy crowing about beating Notre Dame for the next decade.

I don't really care either way.   But I would prefer ND not take a playoff spot generally.  Both because we may be fighting for an at large and because fundamentally, I think it's bullshit that ND don't play in a conference, has a soft schedule and will get rewarded with 100% of the playoff $$ they earn instead sharing.  So F ND.    As for Aggy, I never want nice things for them but I have no real concern they are going to be a force in conference play regardless of outcome.

But I'll be pretty surprised if ND doesn't win this.   I haven't read much from the ND perspective but I'm guessing they appreciate the narrative that the playoffs are on the line and play like it.

I despise the preferential treatment that ND perpetually receives. The fawning over them when they're good from the national media is nauseating as well. That said, I will be cheering wildly for them to win this game. I will cheer for ATM to win one game and one game only - whenever they play OU. That's it. They're going to run their mouths like the idiots they are, sun, rain, sleet or snow, but it's 10 times worse when they win anything worth a shit, like a game in South Bend.

As to the premise of a loss to ATM putting ND out of the playoff conversation, sure, there's a silver lining there, I guess. Of course, I may have bad news for you - if ND is 10-2 at the end of the year, the committee will somehow find a way to justify putting them in and pissing all of us off.

Texas just needs to take care of its own business.

Regardless, to each their own on how they root.

I expect a stupid rock fight. ND doesn’t have a qb.

Carr looked pretty good against a top 10 team on the road. If you don't think ND has a QB after that performance, I'd hate to hear about you think about, ahem, ... other programs and their new QBs.

NDs play calling against Miami was a head scratcher.  I hope they run Love up and down the field against aggy 300 yards grind them out. Keep their offense off the field

As my FIL says, I wouldn’t root for A&M if they were playing Al Queda.
