I think we all need to acknowledge and realize people all across the political spectrum are being radicalized and moved to action.  A context has been established to where Americans are feeling abject terror from and seething anger towards fellow Americans, and Charlie Kirk’s death and this shooter’s ruined life are but the latest ramifications of that.  They won’t be the last.  We the people need to quit tuning into, liking, sharing and electing the architects of this context.  It’s not limited to a side, because both sides are telling the truth about each other and lying about themselves — to themselves.

Turn off the news, unsubscribe from those podcasts, shut down social media, get off the Internet (including Surly).  Focus on connecting with and being kind to others in your proximal life — especially if they are different than you.  If you want to change the world for the better, start there.  It’s easier said than done, and I say it knowing I have been an imperfect adherent if not outright hypocrite in the past.   But I’m trying.

Yeah get your kids involved in volunteering and helping others at an early age so they see other people as humans. I think social media does a great job of cocooning us into our own little biospheres which makes it difficult when you bump into someone who isn't the same as you or thinks the same way you do. You lose sight of what's happening around you because you're so worried about macro things that are out of your control. You can do a lot of good things locally. We help out at a monthly food distribution at a local charity that helps families in need get groceries that last them a few weeks. We assemble the food, group it into sets that can go in the cars that come up, and place it in their cars. The need is there and we don't have the means to alleviate that financially but we can sure use our time and energy to volunteer. My kids can get a little jaded and frankly entitled so it can help reset them to see that other people have it much worse than they do and it's up to us to help make things better. I know it makes us feel better after we do it.

How do you have any idea of their pronouns? Do you have their email signature blocks or are you simply guessing? Don’t be so stereotypical and insensitive.

I think people trying to frame this accused person’s motives as being left or right are simply seeking to confirm an outcome they want to see.

That text exchange is something else.  The increasingly shocked and horrified questions from the roommate, and the flippant and unconcerned responses from the killer.  Far more worried about getting a rifle back to his father than killing another person.  Chilling.

I imagine all this does is cause the disaffected ones that we definitely need to monitor on some level—all it will cause them to do is go further underground. Leave less of an online trail. I know I kid about cameras but they are a fucking game changer for true crime and convicting the guilty. CCTV for all of its scary big brother ness catches everything. And it has no bias and most is stored in the cloud. I do wonder what role AI will play. Will someone fake a video or create a good one to show something that didn’t happen? We know it likely will. But for right now CCTV has to be the biggest thorn in any defense attorney’s side. Caught on camera. Fucked.

Excellent post.

Civil war is the outcome on the current path. There is only one off ramp, and that is reasoned discourse. Violence begins when discussion ends. People need to start listening to what other people are saying. That is what Charlie Kirk stood for. A reasonable liberal person would praise Kirk for valuing talk over violence. The average liberal just doubled down on the slanders.

There is no obvious off ramp. The more likely outcome is more violence with a potential for permanent insurgency from the left.

This is how I know you lack critical thinking skills.

Literally what the party head of the political right is invoking.

If by “people” you mean all people inclusive of yourself and who you vote for, then I have no quibble with your post.  I agree that violence begins when discussion ends, and I’d go further to say discussion ends when one party to the discussion simply wants to discuss the failures of the other (or if both parties only want to discuss the failures of the other, as the case may be).
