My son is a junior in HS. Just got home from band. He said they had big discussion in his 7th period. Kids mostly quiet. Talking about the importance of free speech and how wrong it is to harm someone because you don't like their beliefs. I was glad to hear it. Wasn't glad to hear there were kids watching the video so he had seen it.

As far as Charlie Kirk’s reach goes, he said every kid knew his was whether they, or their parents, agreed with him. Get the feeling this will be one of those teen moments for him that we all have that we’ll never forget.

It has rattled my 16 and 19 year olds for sure. If you have kids, talk to them.

It's interesting that twitter is leaving up a shitload of videos of the shooting, which is pissing off a lot of people.  I've seen calls for Musk to personally intervene and have them removed, all the while these people do not realize that views = money.

A horrific instant perpetrated by a confused and deranged reactionary caught in high definition could be the greatest tool for ratcheting down the frenzy of resentment in this hate-fueled engine of conjured cultural angst. The digital barrage wouldn't stand a chance if the stark reduction of media corners and "content" could momentarily be placed aside in favor of sympathy and revulsion of such senseless violence. The clarity of that fork in the road is so obvious that it seemingly taunts everyone mired in their identity rut of ideology. It's right there. But failure flirting with greatness is a common literary trope. And here it is. But doesn't it still feel so hopeless? That current, strident but often imaginary, runs opposed in two lanes that each run so swift everyone forgets it's ultimately a whirlpool of shared experience. That person who briefly hesitated at the door of the gas station to give the door an additional flick of the wrist so you could catch it. They might have represented everything you despise but you didn't know it in that momentary glimpse of effortless consideration. The list of people who deserve to have their carotid artery severed in sunlight is a short one. And that list does exist. But I don't believe this young man deserved to be on that list. I would do my best to deter anyone who disagrees with that from making a list.

Charlie Kirk:

Controversial statements on race and diversity

Criticism of Black pilots and DEI: In January 2024, Kirk stated, "If a Black pilot is seen, it's necessary to hope he's qualified," while arguing that diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives are "anti-White".

Comments on Black crime: In 2023, Kirk discussed what he called "Black crime" in inner cities, referring to it as a "huge problem no one wants to talk about".

Denunciation of the Civil Rights Act: During a December 2023 Turning Point USA event, Kirk stated, "We made a huge mistake when we passed the Civil Rights Act in the 1960s," claiming it led to a "permanent" bureaucracy promoting diversity.

Racist dog whistles: In September 2024, Kirk was among the first to spread unproven allegations that Haitian immigrants in Ohio were eating cats and dogs. This led to former President Donald Trump repeating the false claim in a televised debate.

Support for "Great Replacement" theory: In a February 2024 Instagram post, Kirk referenced the debunked "Great Replacement" conspiracy theory, which alleges that undocumented immigrants are intentionally replacing white Americans. In August 2024, he also accused a Black lawmaker of being part of an "attempt to eliminate the white population in this country".

Disparagement of Martin Luther King Jr.: Kirk dismissed Martin Luther King Jr. as a "mythological creation" of the 1960s and, during a 2023 event, called him "awful" and "not a good person".

Anti-LGBTQ rhetoric

LGBTQ+ agenda claims: Kirk frequently spoke against what he termed the "LGBTQ agenda," portraying it as a threat to American culture and claiming its efforts would "corrupt your children".

Statements on gender identity: He declared that "there are only two genders" and described transgenderism as "lies that hurt people and abuse kids". He also claimed in 2022 that transgender people were to blame for inflation.

Opposition to transgender healthcare: Kirk vocally opposed gender-affirming care, stating in 2024, "We must ban trans-affirming care — the entire country," and called for Donald Trump to run on this issue.

Homophobic slurs: In 2023, Kirk courted controversy by saying that if January 6 rioters had "stripped naked and filmed themselves having gay sex," they would have been treated more leniently.

Biblical interpretation of homosexuality: In 2024, Kirk cited Leviticus 20:13, which refers to "men lying with men... abomination," calling it "God's perfect law when it comes to sexual matters".

Antisemitic claims

Jewish control conspiracies: In October 2023, Kirk repeated antisemitic tropes about Jews controlling various sectors, alleging they dominated universities, non-profits, and Hollywood.

Philanthropy accusations: He accused "elite" Jewish philanthropies of funding universities that foster antisemitism, thereby "subsidising your own demise".

Claims of anti-white animus: In April 2025, Kirk claimed on his show that Jewish communities "have been pushing the exact kind of hatred against whites that they claim to want people to stop using against them". He also alleged that "the philosophical foundation of anti-whiteness has been largely financed by Jewish donors in the country".

Pandemic-related misinformation

Promotion of COVID-19 conspiracy theories: During the pandemic, Kirk used his platform to spread false and misleading information, including claiming the drug hydroxychloroquine was "100 percent effective" against the virus and promoting baseless conspiracy theories about Chinese authorities.

Opposition to mask mandates and lockdowns: He vocally opposed public health measures like mask mandates and school lockdowns.

Vaccine comparisons: In 2021, Kirk reportedly compared vaccine requirements to apartheid.

Other controversial statements

Promotion of Christian nationalism: Kirk embraced Christian nationalism, warning of a "spiritual battle" against "wokeism, Marxism and Islam." He also referenced the "Seven Mountains Mandate," a political-religious philosophy calling for Christians to control key areas of society.

Comments on gun deaths: After a 2023 mass shooting in Nashville, Kirk claimed that a certain number of gun deaths was a worthwhile "cost" for preserving the Second Amendment.

Support for January 6 rioters: In a January 2021 post on X, Kirk promoted busing "patriots" to Washington, D.C., to "fight for the president" ahead of the January 6th attack on the Capitol. Following the riot, he claimed the rioters did not represent the mainstream of Trump's support.

Ah, thank you for the context. His 2nd amendment quote seemed grotesquely insensitive but at least debatable. But these other quotes make it clear that he’s a modern shock-jock which unfortunately makes him a thought-leader similar to Rush Limbaugh.

It would be great if this moment led to a true change in our country where we actually talk about the inherent rot in our country related to gun violence. But we won't. We'll do the usual finger pointing and trying to score points on the other side. The same thing happened after the Minnesota representative was murdered. Then we'll go about our lives until the next time this happens which should come along shortly.

For the most part, I've stayed away from the two threads pertaining to Kirk. They've gone the way I expected them to go, pretty much as you've succinctly stated above. One of the things noticed, both here and elsewhere in media (social and otherwise) are the number of people who talk about how angry they are, one described it as 'seething.' The term one uses after the loss of someone one cares about is mourning. We mourn the loss of whatever connection we had with them--right down to the most basic: they were a human being akin to us through the birth of one of our own species. The *Sandy Hook parents who lost their children; they mourned all that was and all that would never be. If the feeling one has right after this event is rage and revenge and hate, then perhaps some reflection is in order so that one might examine exactly what this person meant to oneself. If this person was essentially an agent for beliefs in which one shared, then looking around for the opposite in which to unleash those baser instincts will be easy enough, but therein is the paradox. Mourning requires that one treat death with respect. Looking for ways in which to perpetrate more of it is the direct opposite.

*Sandy Hook was obviously one of many such tragedies, but there were so so many deaths...until the next one came along.

So if we have no real physical description at this point, the break is going to have to come from the shooter either being a real loud mouth about intentions online or in person, or have failed in keeping traceable electronics off their person, right?

I did peak at /r/conspiracy (pro tip: most of them are not serious and consider conspiracy theories to be fun things for them to make up and/or amplify) and yeah, Provo's airport was mentioned.  Surprise, surprise, they had already pegged an airplane or two (tail numbers, owners, etc.) that left within an hour of Kirk being shot, that either had their transponders turned off enroute, or flew somewhere where the transponders didn't work, and then returned to the airport after just enough time to fly somebody out of state. Maybe they are college football fans who are experts in FlightTracker.

The current favored theories are A) Mossad/Israel did it or B) It's to deflect from the Epstein business.  As far as helping the shooter escape, A) the old man police arrested was a diversion and B) the shooter flew out of Provo. Mormons also entered the conspiracy conversation.

So, if you heard any of those items I just mentioned coming from family members/co-workers/acquaintances, just remember, they probably got it 3rd-hand from a group of people who make up conspiracy theories for fun, just to see how far they can get them spread.

I have a son who is a freshman in high school. He doesn't yet have social media, but I follow all of his friends so he can peek at their IG accounts from my phone now and again. I think 100% of his friends  whom I follow posted something in their IG stories about Kirk. Some of that is probably copycat, fit in, go with the crowd behavior, but my son said that "everyone at school knows who Charlie Kirk is." /csb

The FBI isn't inspiring a lot of confidence right now. This feels like the perfect storm for someone to get away with it given where it took place, the lack of police presence (6 cops and a small security detail for Kirk), an open campus, and an easy exit surrounded by tons of places to get lost.

At this point it's the reactions to the event that are the story. We ain't gonna know shit about the search until something happens. This fucker might go Eric Rudolph and hide out for years. The only reason the Unabomber got caught was the fact his brother recognized his writing in the manifesto. The one sure thing we know is that there are going to be opinions and they are going to be loud.

You can police the thread and squelch the discussion here, but it's not going to make it go away.
