Yep, this is what I've been saying.  Millions of people don't believe in reality.  They literally do not believe the world they see around them, just what they consume online.  They cannot tell the difference between the online world and the real world.  Seems problematic.

... and now that I think about it, what's the bleach hoax supposed to be? Not only did we all watch him suggest that in a PC, but he supposedly had been going around asking about that in private as well.

When someone takes the stance that news is fake, it's not worth even attempting to talk to them. It's impossible to reason with them, and the only option remaining is to make fun of them.

I don't think we're far from GOP leaders talking about flat earth and fake moon landings. Perhaps not that they fully agree with that opinion but they have to accept it's their constituency.

I'd say it's no different than religion, which is to say we've always had a vast majority of people detached from reality, which also seems problematic.  Not to say this isn't bad, but it's not new either.

When I saw the list of users in the Twitter screenshot, I assumed they were russian bot accounts whose intention is to make a tsunami of disinformation that establishes a false narrative. Scott Adams was the only name I recognized.

I checked the first handful, and they’re valid accounts. The tsunami has rolled in for the 8+ years.

We’re at the point in the process that false narratives are baked in. The believers’ default position is that the opposite of whatever the media reports is the truth. A complete rejection of occam’s razor. There is no reasoning with these people. It’s a fool’s errand to try.

There’s only one satisfying outcome from this ocean of believers. Make money off of them. I suspect that’s what these twitter accounts are trying to do.

Fascism always falls.  But to those who say "so?  Then why are you so worried about it?"....it's because that the damage it does along the way to its inevitable failure is staggering, horrific, and a complete fucking waste to top it all off.

But it sounds – it sounds interesting to me.”

i don't think religious people are dumb.  they've been told something since birth so of course they believe it.  usually without ever questioning it.  if people were never told about religion until they were 18 then nobody would be religious.

My super religious former mother-in-law once told me to my face that children need to be indoctrinated into religion early so that they believe it. Because if they learn about it later in life, it won't be believable. Like Santa Claus.

The parallels are obvious.  What's more interesting to me are the differences.  Hitler seized power during an economic spiral downwards.  And it was real.  Trump is trying to falsify one because he wants to harness the fear that brings.  And it's kinda working, but not really.  But kind of.  The evacuation (be it deportation or camps) of undesired demographic groups is real, but Hitler wants to expand it beyond the Fatherland's borders.  Trump wants to do it from within.
And therein lies the rub.  Trump's base craves insulation and nationalism, doesn't want any more foreign conquests.  Hitler's base knew he had a broader vision for Europe, and they loved it.  Take back all the previous German empires sphere of influence and eradicate anyone inside of the new lands that was not fit for the Reich.  Plus, as evil as he was, Hitler was a cunning and intelligent.  Trump couldn't cognitively test himself out of a wet, paper bag.

Both were stubborn enough so as not to admit defeat.  But in the end, Hitler finally got wise, passed on a directive to Donitz and then took his own life.  Trump won't do that.  He'll die lying until the end, because to pass along his legacy to Eric Trump is to pass it along to a toddler.  Hitler was driven by frustration and low self-esteem and hatred his whole adult life.  And finally seized power and only then, in the waining years of WW2 was he so self-absorbed and insulated, that he truly became dangerous.  Trump has been led his whole life, since birth, with the notion that he was special and anointed.  He never had to scrape for anything.  That is what makes him even more dangerous.  Hitler knew what it was like to be a cornered rat and acted as expected.  Trump won't know the corner when he sees it, and will act even more irrationally than the last 9 years put together.

As a demonstration of loyalty, prominent Nazis turned in Jewish family members (usually by marriage), gays, intellectuals, et. al. to the Reich early on.  It set a precedent that, "If these loyal National Socialists of great import will serve the Reich by ridding our undesired citizenry just within our borders, then the rest of Germany and it's protectorates must do the same as a demonstration of dedication."  If you are a Muslim, LGBTQ, Chinese immigrant, Latin American immigrant, Black, or a woman.  And you vote for Trump or even don't vote at all, don't come crying when you're turned in for re-education, prosecution, hate crimes, lack of health care, or fighting against discrimination.  I won't shed a single tear for you.  In fact, I'll root for your demise.  Hitler wanted to liquidate the minorities of Europe.  I don't mind if we liquidate the stupids of America.  I'd prefer to do this peacefully and re-elect Joe Biden, but if you're in a group that isn't a white male Christian going for Trump, I'll be happy to wave to you from the ramp.

The differences are more important.  The 1920s and 1930s saw a lot of Germans down on their luck and with no outlet for them to speak their minds outside of demonstrations, no steady food source, and few distractions to keep their minds occupied after the WWI losses, and the Treaty of Versailles hurting them economically. In other words, some serious hardships arose for a lot of Germans,

2020s MAGA doesn’t have the kinds of actual feel it in your starving stomach or empty bank account grievances the Germans had, has food security, has an outlet (social media) to blow off steam to keep them from rioting through the streets (not that they have reasons to riot other than losing) , and has distractions (internet, social media, Fox News).

That’s why even if 75 million people voted for Trump, only a few thousand were there on January 6th. That’s why Trump’s rallies have been going down hill and attendances is in the hundreds or thousands. MAGA talks a lot of shit, but at the end of the day, most are too comfortable in their double-wides, with their big-screen TVs and duallies they are forever making payments on to do anything that risks their wellbeing,  in the 1920s you had a lot of Germans who had nothing to lose at all.

Part of the allure for conspiracy nuts is that they think they have inside knowledge the rest of the world doesn’t.  They feel like they are in a movie, in on the big secret.

Laughing at them, well a lot of them will still feel like we don’t actually know because we are blue or red pilled or whatever the fuck it is.  BUT! There will be plenty who dont like to be mocked because it makes them wonder if they are the ones who aren’t in on the secret.

Well put, and as usual, put more succinctly than Lobo.  I've dealt with a lot of powerful people in my lifetime, but the guy I fear the most is the guy with nothing to lose.

-Trump has no expressed plan to move beyond our borders.  Hitler literally wrote a book about it since the first two Reichs had been compressed beyond all recognition.

-Complacency is almost as powerful a drug as being validated politically, in the case of the bottom tier of MAGA nation.

-Then there is the obfuscation of Civil War.  Germans had some internal populations they didn't want there anymore.  But more than that, they wanted back everything from the Rhine to Prussia, North Africa to Moscow.  Trump doesn't even know what he wants, he just wants more adulation.  MAGA nation keeps claiming there'll be violence, but they've yet to clarify who and where?  Do you attack police, brown people who may have voted for Trump, women who may have voted for Trump, the military, civil servants, left-handed people, who?  And where does this all play out?  Which battlefields?  Which lines of demarcation?  What is the theater of this Civil War?  What borders are you wanting to conquer?  You want to 'conquer' a swing state like Pennsylvania that broke for Biden?  Good luck taking Philly or Pittsburgh.  There's no plan, just angry rhetoric.  Say what you want about Lee, he had a geographic theater of war plan that actually worked for a short while.  Say what you want about Hitler, he had a multi-continental plan that actually worked for awhile.  MAGA is just "we gotta buncha guns and we ain't gonna take no more shit.  This is our country."  And then they nod off to reality TV after a bucket of chicken.

The 3rd Reich actually worked from 1933-1943 in terms of its implementation of evil, because smart people got organized and decided they had nothing to lose and everything to gain.  A second MAGA reich won't work because it's even more corrupt than the Nazis, it's less organized, and they suffer from complacency.

And we are so fucking lucky that Hitler was just 44 when he gained complete control and in good shape.  Trump is 78 and getting worse by the day.  Bad news-when Hitler died and shortly thereafter Donitz gave unconditional surrender, the Germans stood down almost immediately.  Turned in their weapons and armories, ships to port, fixed wing groups grounded forever.  They learned of their atrocities and set to rectify their sins and rebuild their country and much of Europe.  There were no statues erected, no flags of Hitler hoisted in protest to Allied occupation, the Marshall plan was carried out to the letter by those people, they accepted their inner ugliness and the punishment that came along with their complicity.  To this day, there are no statues, no monuments to their insane leaders.  Every German student, from a young age, is taught about WW2 and the Holocaust.  and nobody complains, "I don't want those books in my child's class...he might feel bad about his heritage."  They don't shy away from it like we do.

When Trump goes, and he will soon.  It won't be like May 1945 Germany.  they won't take it well at all.  They'll act out insanely.  But they won't know who to take it out on.  that's the real danger.  25mm stupid people, armed to the teeth, with nothing to lose, and no Marshall to guide them.

The scenario is pretty clear.   Follow A Handmaid's tale.  The plan actually gets out in front of the leaders, and becomes bigger than even their vision, and then they can't stop it.

What does it look like?  Imagine Texas run by Ken Paxton with unlimited and unchecked authority (by the way, you don't need to merely "imagine" that for much longer.  The Gov and Lt. Gov bend the knee to him, and all of our courts are afraid of him and will do whatever he demands, lest he loose his MAGA minions on them and primary them out of office).  Your blue city/neighborhood feels otherwise?  Tough fucking shit.  The AG's shock troops (have you, ummm, noticed the massive militarization of the DPS?) will show up, occupy the fuck out of you, and impose what looks exactly like martial law.  Spot checks of your daughter leaving the neighborhood, to make sure she's not pregnant and maybe going to get an abortion somewhere?  Yep.  All of the shit.

Your choices will either flee, submit, or fight.  That's what your civil war looks like.  Texas, punished and purged.  They're running the play right now.  Not later.  NOW.

With all due respect, you are incorrect. Atom, you’re a good poster. But, you and many other Surly posters — I guess from mostly McCombs and the corporate/capitalist world — need to realize humans are not 100% economic minded. Far from it.

What do Harlan Crow and West Texas billionaires have in common with MAGA fanatics living in trailer parks? It’s not fucking loads of money or fear of hunger.

— It’s a hard-core belief in God and Christianity, racism, and fear of leftist wokeism. That’s their great fear … not finding a loaf of bread in the Great Depression.

— That’s why cultural similarities are far more important, as mentioned in my original post. It does not matter that Germans had economic hardship and MAGA doesn’t much of any.

What does matter are the endless cultural fears and grievances … the heavily Christian followers, the racism, the belief "my country is being taken by immigrants,” the belief "woke is grooming my kids.”….  It’s the idiot world culture (Q, conspiracy, astrology, pseudoscience, etc.), the combo of ignorance and arrogance. … It’s the belief in a Great Leader, the belief that God has their back in a Great Destiny of Christian Cultural Purity.

That’s why, with no economic hardship, MAGA is still fucking seizing power across America. They are establishing a fascist theocracy, gutting schools, banning books, and targeting pregnant women, LGBTQIA, immigrants and promising deportations. … They are celebrating and posing with automatic weapons, attacking all kinds of established sciences, putting 10 Commandments in classes, openly telling everyone they will establish a CHRISTIAN DICTATORSHIP in Project 2025.

None of this has to do with economic hardship. We’re not in a Great Depression and yet fascism is on the march and seizing power, in Texas and across America.

Look beyond economics. It’s the cultural environments all around us, right before our eyes.

Neither Harlan Crow nor the West Texas billionaires would piss on the average MAGAt if they were on fire. The MAGAts are a useful idiot army.

Disagree. Much of the world and the American elite did nothing during his rise to power, despite detailed knowledge of the relatively minor atrocities committed prior to the real ramp up of extermination when the empire was shrinking.

Had Germany committed to a limited war with takeover of Germanic or partially Germanic territory and even a few that were not like France and the Nordic  countries, then I think US involvement would have been limited. I say that with the caveat that Japan also affected the decision.

This list of American titans of business that all but aided the Nazi cause is long, deep, well funded, and very washed over by history.

Germany had a very stout army and could have very well succeeded in a limited takeover of Europe had they not been bat shit crazy.

There are numerous scenarios where an invasion of Europe by the US could have been difficult and unsuccessful. To say nothing of a measured approach by Germany leading to their development of atomic weapons without interference from multifront wars.

The world was truly fortunate. Germany had it there for the taking and just fucked up. History really did stand on the edge of a knife.

Nope. Like all fascists, totalitarians, and Christian warriors, MAGA will totally celebrate a foreign conquest and military victory. After all, the Nazis were “nationalists" …. until they weren’t … and invaded Europe.

For MAGA: Let’s say, for example, taking on the cartels south of the border … and, just to be sure … take all of Mexico to completely stop the flow of drugs and immigrants. What better way to secure our border. Mexico would quickly surrender/collapse in the face of Pentagon power. MAGA and the Christians-Catholics could establish a proxy government in Mexico City, but run from the US.

MAGA would have parades far and wide. Church bells ringing across America. The media would largely celebrate it, too. It would be like when Reagan invaded Grenada (1980s) and the GOP went bananas with love and adoration. Only exponentially more with Trump in the White House.

Fair points.  But another 'difference' that is more disturbing to me than the similarities is, Hitler installed those general and flag officers.  He built that fascist bureaucracy and Wermacht, almost from scratch.  They owed their power, their vocation, even their lives---to Hitler.  Trump has shit on the military at every turn.  Obviously he still has plenty of followers among the NCO's and enlisted, but as Adm. McRaven warns---the officers of the Wermacht owed everything they had to Hitler, Trump merely inherited the Pentagon.  They don't owe him anything.  Even with their fealty to Hitler, some of them tried a number of times to kill him.  Trump turns the military towards the people or a foreign power without provocation, it will make General Beck look like a toddler.

there are plenty of serviceman who are chomping to invade something, anything for Trump.  But unlike Hitler's senior officers, those of the U.S. Armed Forces were here before Trump and they will think of what it should be like after Trump.  We sleep under that safe mindset, not that of a deranged tangerine.
