Lil’Jordan Humphrey

We have plenty of WR talent and don’t need him. In fact, his presence would exacerbate an already significant depth chart problem.

Also if rumors are true, he also possibly wasn’t going to play much anyway because of violations of team rules (weed?). Loved and appreciated his contributions, but he probably needed to move on to try to be successful at the next level.

Now perhaps some other draft-eligible juniors with late-round to UDFA projections won't be so quick to dismiss all the advice to stay for their senior years to build their resumes. LJH should have listened last year; maybe others in his situation will listen in the future.

If anyone is interested, LJH has struggled pretty badly so far in Saints camp, per the reports. Some bad drops, and a few other things. Uphill battle for sure.

Link? Or is this just what Boudreaux told you on the Buddy D show?

Man it all just makes me sad that he's not back. We damn sure could have used him, and even if he never bled burnt orange his attitude clearly didn't stop him from showing out last year. IDGAF if he viewed his time at Texas as a springboard to the career he was hoping to have, that's what college is for. But now it doesn't look like he's got the career he was wanting and we don't have our top receiver and it seems like a big lose-lose.

First of all it was totally his decision.   Second, if he didn't want to play for the longhorns this year, we will be better off without him this year.  That is all the team needs is a senior cancer.  I don't know that he could have topped last years production.  If he can't prepare for the NFL career who is to say how he would have prepared this year.  I wish him the best but once he made his decision it is not worth looking back to "what if" or "what could have been."  Next man up and be excited for the opportunity.

I wish him the best and thought when he went to the Saints he had a very good shot but the fact that this hasn't work out makes me think we may not miss him that much had he returned.

Loser: Lil’Jordan Humphrey, wide receiver

Humphrey hasn’t made much noise in a crowded room of wide receivers. It’s unfortunate, because he has one of the clearest projections of any of the new additions as a specialist who can line up in the slot and make tough catches in traffic, much like Marques Colston once made a living doing.

It’s frustrating to see because other young wideouts like Emmanuel Butler and Cyril Grayson have shown up right away. The silver lining here is that Humphrey isn’t really doing anything wrong. He’s not dropping passes, and he’s not running the wrong routes. He’s simply not making “wow” plays and doing anything memorable. He kind of looks like just another training camp body.

There’s still plenty of time for him to start making a difference, though. We’re only a week into practices and Humphrey should get plenty of looks in the preseason games. All he needs is to start stringing together good performances and showing off skills that nobody else has, which he did last year for the Texas Longhorns. It feels like he could flip a switch at any time and show the Saints plenty to like.

BAD DROPS

Perhaps it was the very humid conditions or maybe a lack of focus, but rookie wide receiver Lil’Jordan Humphrey had two noticeable drops of catchable passes during practice. Both appeared to hit him right in the hands, but Humphrey couldn’t haul either of them in.

While it is still early in training camp, dropped passes won’t help the rookie’s cause as he battles for a roster spot, especially if he continues to put catchable balls on the ground.

Just looked back at LJH's recruiting profile and combine results.

In high school, he ran a 4.16 20-yard shuttle. Not the best, but not the worst by a long shot.

At the NFL Combine (You know, the event you spend your whole life preparing for), he ran a 4.29.

How does a player go through 3 years of Division I S&C programs and get slower? He wasn't injured. Didn't bulk up substantially. It doesn't really add up. He also rarely dropped any passes while playing in big games. Has anyone suggested that perhaps he deals with anxiety under heavy pressure?

he would have been the best WR on the team

“We won’t miss our most productive receiver with a habit of making clutch plays that were basically the difference between a win and a loss in several close games” is a homer-ass take. We do have good WR depth on paper but come on, if he was coming back nobody would be saying “ho hum, who needs him.”

Not saying we won’t be ok or even quite good at WR but we’d be in a better position with him, pretty much by definition. Especially with Sam who, for all his strengths, doesn’t tend to hit receivers in stride downfield. Having another tall physical guy (along with CJ) who could stop and beat the DBs for those jumpballs complemented Sam much better than a track star type WR. Same deal with him producing YAC a lot of times even when he caught the ball with a defender already attached to him.

I find it highly unlikely that LJH would have been a better candidate to make the NFL after another year of college ball.  What he needs is for some team to recognize his production in college and take a leap of faith that he could replicate it in the pros.  That's pretty hard to do when everything you see after college (combine, preseason) screams "not very athletic, not very motivated".

truth.  He was Sam's #1 all game; the YAC was phenomenal, great hands, clutch. A SR LJH would have been touching All America status.

Unless a high school player has their shuttle/40 yd dash/ any other metric recorded at some Nike or Under Armour combine there’s roughly a 100% chance that it’s made up.

That doesn't sound too bad.  Maybe when the pads come one during a real (preseason) game his physicality shows.

damn it's hard to make an NFL roster these days. I really hope the roster expands to 60, and increment of 7, meaning 224 (7x32) players make it.   The practice squad somewhat fulfills that role, but pay is relatively low and they don't hit the field (do they?).

it pays more than any other job he’s gonna get at age 21 without a college degree.

Looks like the 2018 practice squad minimum was $7,600 a week, or $129K if you stick the entire season.  Pales in comparison to NFL starter money, but is more than most 22 year olds with a degree from Texas are gonna get. I don't imagine most practice squad guys stick around for more than a couple of seasons, so you better start calling the CFL.

Can only be on a practice squad twice. If you play in a regular season game you get three games worth of paychecks at the league minimum.

Friends “little” brother made his way to NFL retirement through the practice squad and the looks it got him.

LJ showed up and showed out. The LSU kid is faster, and looked pretty good, but LJ did that LJ thing, made a good catch got some YAC and a 1st, then a nice open catch and defeated two tacklers to put on another prolly 15 YAC and 6 points. Makes it tough to cut him. He does this through the next three exhibition games, and he's gonna get paid.
