NCAA football rule changes

On targeting:

Quote

Beginning in the fall in games using video review, instant replay officials will be directed to examine all aspects of the play and confirm the targeting foul when all elements of targeting are present. If any element of targeting cannot be confirmed, the replay official will overturn the targeting foul. There will not be an option for letting the call on the field “stand” during a targeting review — it must either be confirmed or overturned. Games using the halftime video review procedure will continue to use the current process.

On overtime:

Quote

Panel members approved a tweak to the overtime rules. If a game reaches a fifth overtime, teams will run alternating two-point plays, instead of starting another drive at the opponent’s 25-yard line. This rules change was made to limit the number of plays from scrimmage and to bring the game to a conclusion.

On kickoffs:

Quote

The panel approved a rules change to eliminate the two-man wedge formation on all kickoffs.

On blindside blocks:

Quote

The panel approved a new rule relevant to blind-side blocking techniques. Players will not be allowed to deliver a blind-side block by attacking an opponent with forcible contact. It will be a personal foul with a 15-yard penalty. If the block also includes the elements of targeting, it will be a blind-side block with targeting.

Dumb.  Just move it back to the 35, and the number of overtimes would go way down.

Good on the targeting rule.

But does a new can worms get opened on the blindside blocking penalty?

of course.   its almost guaranteed to happen- and since its almost always done on offense, you may end up losing your most important linemen/ WR/ TE to the process.

and of course, they didnt fucking say it was reviewable (unless targeting), so we are right back to the first games of the targeting rule where everyone lost their shit when a ref called targeting and it was clearly not targeting, yet the penalty stood along with the suspension.

Make overtime resemble real football, you know like the NFL does. Starting at the 25 is just fucking silly. I was hoping to see a real change take place before opening this thread but nope. Most games don't even reach that many OTs so that change is pointless. If you are going to go to the NFL's model, then have them start at the 50yd line minimum. But it would be better served on their own 40. 60 yards in front of you.

Exactly what I was thinking...

Why couldn't they just wrap it all  under the jurisdiction of targeting and treat as such under the new rules?   Most of those blind side blocks I've see over the years are similar to defensive targeting.  Call it offensive targeting subjected to the same review process.

Yep.  Receivers/TE coaches are going to have to coach the guys to set basketball style picks on a blindside block play.   Run up and get in the way, don’t initiate the contact.

Going to be a plethora of horrific calls the first few weeks of the season

On blindside blocks:

that’s fucking unbelievable.  so if the pursuing defender can’t see you coming to block him he has a free path to make the tackle.  unless you block him, for which you will be penalized.

this fucking game...

While it's true the committee were told there would be no maths, a two-man wedge is not possible regardless of one's arithmentical [sic] skills.

Unless one player outweighs the other by 250+ pounds, and even then, it's questionable.

I like the college version of OT better than that of the NFL. Football s the ultimate team sport, butNE never had to face Mahomes in OT because of the NFL’s fucked up rules.

And call a charging foul on the defensive player.

NFL OT is largely over after the coin flip.

1. line up for goalline or other short yardage situation

2. OL except center do a landry flexset then standup and do an about-face and go in to a passprotect stance facing away from opponent

3. snap ball

4. walk backwards

5. ?

6. profit

OT start from the 25, no FG, no 1st downs you have 4 plays to score. After 2 OT possession for each team first team to score wins

That's good except you should be able to get a first down.

The reasons to eliminate 1st downs is because defense is football too. I would be ok starting from the 30 and giving a 1st down after crossing the 15.

So you don't understand what a first down is in American football.

Tell us more...

Uh yes I do understand what a first down is in American football. You don’t seem to understand making changes to the OT rules to shorten the game.

no, i got it bro.

15 yards for a first down is dumb as hell without first incurring a penalty.

Leave it the fuck alone.  Don't overthink it.

It’s a dead heat between which of these I find most impressive: (1) you can do basic math and (2) your hot takes are consistently trash.

These fucking assholes just can’t help but fuck up the rules. What constitutes “forcible contact” on a blind-side block? Fuck, what constitutes a blind-side for that matter? So you can “blind-side” block with contact, as long as it isn’t forcible? This is another shit rule that is rife for abuse from referee interpretation, and of course, it won’t be reviewable. And it means we will never again see a block like the one Cosby laid on that fucking sooner bitch.

Though upon further review, that was not the blind side. Or was it?

I like this idea.  Or eliminate extra points/field goals - go for it on 4th and run 2 point conversions after every td.
