No we wouldn't.  Not in this day in age.  Shit has changed since Strong got fired.

It doesn't count when they have to tell you.

I split hairs with you on Notre Dame, but you need a guy at Freeman’s level to recruit nationally.

Michigan’s best players usually come from Detroit or Ohio. They have to knock heads with fOSU in both areas. Penn State pretty much has all of Pennsylvania to themselves plus easy proximity to the DMV and Jersey.

I wonder if they want that one back? They ran the Northeast and DMV in recruiting for decades.

I think Penn State is the second best recruiting job in the north.

The story was the same as the Texas A&M to SEC story.  When PSU joined the BUG they 'opened' PA to recruiting from the conference.  That was not reciprocated by players from Ohio preferring to go far away to Happy Valley.  At least that was PSU's explanation of why they went bad a few years after joining.

James Franklin had been the Nittany Lions’ head coach since 2014.

Accomplishments:
• 104-45 record
• Five AP Top 10 finishes
• Seven AP Top 20 finishes
• Six 10-win seasons
• 2016 Big Ten Champions
• 2024 CFP Appearance
• 2017 Fiesta Bowl Champions Washington
• 2019 Cotton Bowl Champions Memphis
• 2022 Rose Bowl Champions Utah
• 2024 Fiesta Bowl Champions Boise State,

Franklin had Penn State ranked in the AP Top 10 at some point in ten consecutive seasons dating back to 2016.

Those bowl wins.  Franklin drew a lot of smaller programs.  Not so well when the opponent was better known.

3 putt over here stanning for James Franklin well…to be honest it probably should have been on all of our bingo cards. A Mack Brown apologist to his core, even if it’s a less successful, more rapey Mack Brown.

The Catholic church gives Notre Dame a built-in national recruiting base.  Lou Holtz was a shitty recruiter and got dudes.

Pennsylvania puts out players, but not at the same level as Ohio. Ok, Pedo State has the third best recruiting setup in the North.

PSU is basically the football school for the Acela Corridor when they are good, and Franklin had gotten the pipeline in order.  Northern Virginia to New York. That’s a lot of dudes.

It might get chippy with Maryland when they are good or VaTech back in the day at the South end but PSU is not far and is the big choice for DC, Maryland, Penn, NJ, New York.

It was the level of failure, combined with all the money that got pumped into this season to give him his shot for a national championship. All the NIL money to bring everyone back and fill in the holes. The 3 million for Knowles.

Franklin himself said that this is the best personnel and staff he’s ever had.

And then he managed to accomplish back to back failures that hadn’t happened in decades. First he showed that he still can’t put together an offense that can deliver in big games in the loss to Oregon, but the goal was still technically on the table. Then he becomes the first coach in 40 years to lose as a top 10 team to an 0-4 team. The closest thing I can remember to that was USC losing to 1-3 Stanford in 2007 as a 40 point favorite, but they rallied and won the pac 12 for the 5th consecutive time and Carrol won 2 national championships. Then, still not mathematically eliminated from the playoffs, he had to right the ship at home against northwestern as a 20 point favorite again at homecoming. Instead he became the first coach in over 30 years to lose back to back games as a 20 point favorite.

And more than anything, he’s clearly unable to develop a quarterback, doesn’t know how to hire someone who can, can’t recruit quarterbacks, and doesn’t know how to identify if he has a quarterback who can win him a championship. Convinced that Drew Allar was that guy, he got the money and convinced Allar to stay for this year. Then he let Allar announce that he was coming back before the playoffs started so Pribula immediately entered the transfer portal before the playoffs started. This team would have been closer to a national championship with Pribula this season. A lot of people thought that late last year, but the guy whose job it is to know that couldn’t see it.

Contrast that with Ohio state and Kyle McCord. They identified that he wasn’t going to win them a national championship so they brought in someone who could do it and they won it.

Why would you replace Franklin with an equal or worse big game coach?

The reason this is funny is that they are very likely to end up with a worse coach unless it’s Cignetti.

If you are firing a coach mid season your program is already on tilt decision making wise.  In that state it's easy to double down on stupid.

It’s a lot easier to turn an 11 win program into a 7 or 8 win program as opposed to a 14 win program. PSU likely to find that out.

I used to kind of like Penn State; a hard-nosed football crazed place that’s less insufferable than Michigan and trashy than tOSU. That was before the whole thing where they let a DC rape kids in the shower and didn’t tell anyone or stop it.

Cignetti is currently making 300k less than Franklin was making. So, unless you are looking at bumping Cignetti to 10 or 12, Indiana is matching that.

What makes this whole damn coaching carousel so damn interesting is that there is not a ton of "good" options for high-end jobs waiting in the wings. What is the "list" of high end coaches that teams would use at this point for a high profile college job? There is just not a ton of talent that doesn't have a ton of warts at this point.

Cignatti, Elko, Jimbo, Summral, Drink, Mullen, hell even Kingsburry are going to get kicked around as potential names if a big opening comes up right now. The number and quality of names available is just not very stellar right now.

Elko is a New Jersey, Pennsylvania guy. He’ll take the PSU job. Book it.

So the likely sequence of events has to be:

- Franklin gets fired

- Elko's reps get a big raise and extension out of A&M as soon as the slightest hint of interest from Penn State is mentioned

- Several losses in a short timespan, culminating in a 9-4, 8-5 type season

- It is revealed that Penn State never had serious interest in the first place

Right?

It would absolutely be so aggy to extend him with a huge contract in a year they missed Bama, Georgia, Tennessee, right before 2026, when they go to Bama, LSU, Missouri, OU and have Texas and Tennessee

Holy crapola, whoever gets the job is probably going to have a sensational debut

Marshall
at Temple
Buffalo
at Maryland
at Michigan
at Northwestern
Minnesota
Purdue
Rutgers
USC
Wisconsin
at Washington

If the new guy can't win 10 games minimum with that schedule, the hire was Charlie Strong-esque.

He's got aggy back in the top 5. That fat mfer could probably get a 15 year contract at $15M fully guaranteed and 10% ownership of their shithole university. After the Schloss embarrassment those red ass ags are not going to lose another coach. Like Jimbo, he hasnt achieved a goddamn thing yet, but I fully expect aggy to do something really fucking stupid. Its what they do. They cant help it.

And then Sark will drag his nuts all over elko's face again this November.

Matt Campbell is the guy I would be going for if I were Penn State.

Matt Campbell's buyout depends on the scenario: if he leaves to take another "Power 4" coaching job, the buyout is a $2 million penalty to Iowa State. However, if Iowa State were to fire him without cause, the buyout would be approximately $35.4 million as of December 1, 2025.

When Rhule was coaching at Baylor, he talked about Penn State a lot, and I thought his ambitions were (1)NFL and (2)Penn State. He's jumped jobs a lot, and was just getting Baylor together when he jumped to the Carolina Panthers. His biggest strengths are his organization, and he wins the games he should win. I have never been enamored of his handling of the quarterback room. I don't know if his ceiling is like Franklin's, or if he's just left programs about the time they were reaching the point that they could compete against top 25 teams. Both Baylor and Nebraska were basket cases when he got there. Baylor's Sugar Bowl win was mostly with Rhule players, and he is big on recruiting measurables. He moves players between position groups a lot. I know the NFL kicked him out, but NFL coaching and college are different beasts. I know Temple, Baylor and Nebraska were all happy with him. Good hire for Penn State? I don't know. If he'll stay there long enough to finish a program build, we can find out if he can beat top 25 teams.

I can't imagine firing Franklin, paying $50M for the honor, and then hiring Rhule or Campbell. If they are going to do that, they might as well kept Franklin until the end of the year to see what his final record is.

Firing a coach mid season is to get a head start on the coaching search campaign. They fired someone early so that they could hire a dude who would still be available at the end of this year, and the end of next year, and and the end of the year after that...

Several well-respected shaggy posters have consistently said that the talent at A&M, particularly the transfer talent, isn’t as good as their current performance indicates. Nor is their offense as good as it seems. I guess we will see.

However, how awesome would it be to see the rubes increase his salary to some stupid level and extend the contract to some stupid date, only to realize late next year he isn’t the guy. That would be so fun to watch. Thank you James Franklin.

Facts. And it does make me wonder if Florida will make a move on Billy like their fans hope.  They are at least more likely to let him finish the season to see if he can pull out of a flat spin. Because some schools are about to really overpay the coaches they end up hiring.
