daughter is a damn good dancer at her high school, didn't make officer though this week.  Fuck the bullshit they make these girls go through.  She feels like her world has ended and wants to set the world on fire.  I gave her half a shot of whiskey and said "welcome to the club"

My "baby boy" just graduated high school. So weird. I swear he is still a little boy but instead of playing trucks and legos, he drives a truck and has a job. Life definitely comes at you fast. For now, his plan is to stay home one more year and go to juco and really find out what he wants to do. Most likely study to be a sports statistician/analytics work.

Hulked out on my 12 yo son Saturday.

While we were getting ready for his sister’s birthday party he was messing with her as big brothers often do.
Little sis gets fed up and pushed him. I turned the corner just as he slapped her. I lost my shit. Lion roar loud lost my shit.

After the dust settled I tried my best to explain that’s never okay and that’s my daughter to protect just like I’d do the same for him. It’s also his sister and his duty to be an example and protect her too.

I hope I never again see that look of fear in his eyes.

Just turned 10 months!

Since my grandparents were adults in the late 19th Century, I marvel at the fact he’ll live well into the 22nd Century.
A four century look at live generations by my own eyes is pretty mind-boggling to me.
From my own family - Grandparents to grand nieces (1874 - 2100+):

My soon to be 14 year old is finishing up 8th grade today. 4 more years left of being his learning coach. Even on the hard days, I wouldn’t change it.

Volunteered to coach my almost 4 year old’s T-ball team without really realizing what I was getting myself into. The difference in the whole team (and my coaching) from week 1 til today was night and day - very cool to see. 3-4 is definitely young for t ball but I could tell the kids had fun. Anyway, champs motha fuckas!

Eating pizza right before the flight and giving him the crust is such a great move. He takes forever with the crust.

My wife was a Strutter for 5 years @ SouthWest Texas State & says she was denied a Lieutenant position. "You perform well, make it on time to all the practices, don't wear dungarees on campus & I don’t EVER want any of my 'Babies' to get seen coming or going in the bedrooms @ any Frat house parties... but your hair is too short" - supposedly Mrs. Tidwell circa 1984.

Crazy that this will be my 4th father's day, with a freshly turned 3 year-old and 8 month-old.

My life has largely been stay-at-home dad since the first one came, and that period is likely coming to an end before long. Taking care of 2 little boys is not complicated, but it has been varying degrees of exhausting, rewarding, aggravating, joyous, boring, nostalgic, terrifying and ever-changing.

I never missed babyhood with the oldest, since we always expected a 2nd and the he was never easy. But now that the 2nd is running out of days in the baby carrier attached to my chest, it's crazy to think that this period of our lives is almost over.

So…my first Father’s Day without someone to call, give a card to, take out for Korean BBQ. Passages. Generations fall away. On one of our living room shelves is my favorite photo of my dad for as long as I can remember - a picture of him in a plaid shirt, carrying me on his shoulders. I was maybe a year old. But it’s my favorite. Probably for different reasons at different times in my life, yet always with the same underlying reason: a son on his father’s shoulders. Our fathers are men; they are not perfect. But we all are lifted upon their shoulders. We don’t “stand on the shoulders of giants.” Rather, we are borne on the shoulders of genuniely human men who loved, failed, tried, succeeded, and maybe failed some more. He is not here anymore. He never will be again. But I am in a space that he helped lift me into. And from there, I am to lift my daughter and son. As fathers, our shoulders are not just our own; they carry the weight of all the generations to come. What a privilege, and a gift.

Happy Father’s Day, gents.

I’m enjoying my 42nd father’s day, much the same as my first.  My daughter left out a basket of nice goodies and dark roast coffee for me, and my sweet and beautiful bride just wished me a good day. This has been a difficult year but we are rallying. I’m so thankful to have my girls living under the same roof again just as we were in 1984.  I can honestly say I am married to the most beautiful female I have ever seen and she is more beautiful inside than out. I am one lucky dog. I hope all Surly fathers have a very pleasant day.
