daughter is a damn good dancer at her high school, didn't make officer though this week.  Fuck the bullshit they make these girls go through.  She feels like her world has ended and wants to set the world on fire.  I gave her half a shot of whiskey and said "welcome to the club"

My "baby boy" just graduated high school. So weird. I swear he is still a little boy but instead of playing trucks and legos, he drives a truck and has a job. Life definitely comes at you fast. For now, his plan is to stay home one more year and go to juco and really find out what he wants to do. Most likely study to be a sports statistician/analytics work.

Hulked out on my 12 yo son Saturday.

While we were getting ready for his sister’s birthday party he was messing with her as big brothers often do.
Little sis gets fed up and pushed him. I turned the corner just as he slapped her. I lost my shit. Lion roar loud lost my shit.

After the dust settled I tried my best to explain that’s never okay and that’s my daughter to protect just like I’d do the same for him. It’s also his sister and his duty to be an example and protect her too.

I hope I never again see that look of fear in his eyes.

Since my grandparents were adults in the late 19th Century, I marvel at the fact he’ll live well into the 22nd Century.
A four century look at live generations by my own eyes is pretty mind-boggling to me.
From my own family - Grandparents to grand nieces (1874 - 2100+):

My soon to be 14 year old is finishing up 8th grade today. 4 more years left of being his learning coach. Even on the hard days, I wouldn’t change it.

Volunteered to coach my almost 4 year old’s T-ball team without really realizing what I was getting myself into. The difference in the whole team (and my coaching) from week 1 til today was night and day - very cool to see. 3-4 is definitely young for t ball but I could tell the kids had fun. Anyway, champs motha fuckas!

Eating pizza right before the flight and giving him the crust is such a great move. He takes forever with the crust.

My wife was a Strutter for 5 years @ SouthWest Texas State & says she was denied a Lieutenant position. "You perform well, make it on time to all the practices, don't wear dungarees on campus & I don’t EVER want any of my 'Babies' to get seen coming or going in the bedrooms @ any Frat house parties... but your hair is too short" - supposedly Mrs. Tidwell circa 1984.

Crazy that this will be my 4th father's day, with a freshly turned 3 year-old and 8 month-old.

My life has largely been stay-at-home dad since the first one came, and that period is likely coming to an end before long. Taking care of 2 little boys is not complicated, but it has been varying degrees of exhausting, rewarding, aggravating, joyous, boring, nostalgic, terrifying and ever-changing.

I never missed babyhood with the oldest, since we always expected a 2nd and the he was never easy. But now that the 2nd is running out of days in the baby carrier attached to my chest, it's crazy to think that this period of our lives is almost over.

I’m enjoying my 42nd father’s day, much the same as my first.  My daughter left out a basket of nice goodies and dark roast coffee for me, and my sweet and beautiful bride just wished me a good day. This has been a difficult year but we are rallying. I’m so thankful to have my girls living under the same roof again just as we were in 1984.  I can honestly say I am married to the most beautiful female I have ever seen and she is more beautiful inside than out. I am one lucky dog. I hope all Surly fathers have a very pleasant day.

Realized yesterday that I took essentially the same picture two years in a row on Father’s Day, and I think this is going to be the tradition. Enchiladas for lunch and then ice cream on the little turf lawn. This is one of my favorite pictures of the daughter (last year, right after I had been laid off and really needed a good day). She pulled the stanchion down on her head while waiting in line at REI before we went to the restaurant.

Taking my boys around campus today, is it possible to get inside DKR and look at the trophies etc?

I dont know about all of DKR, but the trophy room is on the north side of the endzone and is pretty much open all the time, is my understanding.

The ice-maker in our freezer is on the blink (shocking).  So we've had to start ice-picking it on the regular.  I walked through the kitchen a minute ago, and my sixteen-year-old is making a hell of a mess of the job.

Me:

"You've got to chip at it.  You wouldn't last five minutes in Minnesota, Wisconsin, or just north of town for the matter."

Ridiculous thing for me to say, but I hope he remembers it somehow and mentions it at my wake.

Been there multiple times myself as a dad and as a young player. Once my step-dad insisted on us driving to an American Legion tournament despite the storm and I thought we were going to die. Then I relived the experience with my sons.

The 3 year-old has suddenly started with the incessant "why" questions. He was also climbing all over me while I gave the baby a bottle this morning and when I told him he was being a distraction he said "I'm not being distraction, I'm being perfect."

I need some additional life insurance for me and the wife. We’ve got term policies that expire in the next couple of years and want to increase our coverage and extend the term. Current policies are with State Farm. Does anybody have any advice on companies that offer term life insurance?

I think @C-Man is the potential surly expert here. He helped me a few years back.

I’m slightly curious if I could get a better rate now. I’m older so my assumption is no (40 vs 36 or whenever it was) but my bloodwork/weight/etc is better. Either way, good to be covered with the kids.

i feel like I’ve been oversharing, but I’m so proud of my daughter. She had a dance recital, which was great, but she loves her little brother so much and is such a good big sister. Has been forever. She came out and immediately gave her brother a big hug and then, unprompted, walked him over to a big tree to pose for pictures. So he’s covered for his next resume.

I was prepared for a problem with jealousy or whatever and instead it has been one of the more joyful aspects of parenthood. And he idolizes her, copies everything she does.

Just got back from doing the same with my younger son.  He loves it up there, I'm pretty sure we've lost him to the mountains just like his older brother..

Weird times, despite my parenting they have grown into the most amazing people.

The 3 year-old was watching a show about some Australian zoo. They showed a bilby (see below if you're marsupial-illiterate), which he referred to as a "bunny pig". Pretty spot-on observation, honestly.

Well, some later-stage parenting-dadding going on here.

Daughter graduated college a couple of years ago, and realized that the "plan" she thought she had for after graduation wasn't a plan at all (parents did a shit job of pushing her on that and asking questions -- we just assumed she had it figured out, because she always had everything else figured out).  Out of desperation, she applied to a shitty grad school (and got in)....and we told her that we weren't going to cover grad school just because she didn't know what to do and was afraid of growing up.  Led to a tense several months at our casa, as she came home and was adrift and lost.  She started digging herself out, working with a research project and leader in her field here in Austin for several months.  Then, she started looking for her first "big girl" job in earnest.  For what she was looking for (something to use her language skills), those jobs were almost all in NYC or DC, but there weren't many.  She realized there were a lot more in London.

So, she up and moved to London, activated her UK visa (she was eligible for one because of where she went to uni), and busted her ass to find an entry-level job.  She found one, and it's actually called on her to use her three languages other than english.  Pay was shit, job was meh...but hey, "first job."  Took her some time to adjust to and learn to like London (she's not living in central London, that's too expensive -- she's up in Hackney).  But she's come around on it.

And now, after working for a couple of years (in total), it's time for her to take a next step to move up in employability, and get a usable master's degree.  With her fluency in Germany, she applied mostly to programs in Germany, and just today she was accepted into her first choice, the University of Bonn.  So, starting this fall, she'll be living and studying in Bonn for two years.

It's good, and I'm excited for her.  But I'm also worried about her selling herself short, and settling for a career path that doesn't feed her.  She still has some significant maturing to do (fucking hell, your 20s are hard).  But she's moving the ball.  She got into her top choice.  And I'm happy for her.  While I worry like hell about her at the same time.  This parenting shit doesn't stop.

The boy is through his freshman year.  Biz school.  ROTC.  Fraternity.  Lot to pack into a 1st year.  Lost weight, got sick a lot, but he's back and working over the summer and finalizing his Guard contract.

Daughter headed to San Diego for the ECNL soccer playoffs.  She has offers in hand, but we'll see if anyone reaches out.  Then we're done.  I might have to get a puppy....
