Urban Meyer or bust

Campbell is a seriously loyal guy. It’s not surprising at all to me that he’d want to wait until after the bowl. A NY6 bowl for ISU is a big fucking deal.

I also don’t think Campbell is nearly as worried about short-term recruiting as some guys. He’s much more focused on development and culture, and his success at ISU probably reinforces that belief for him, right or wrong.

Agreed, what does an extra week recrutiing in 2020 really get you? Especially with an additional month till NSD2 anyway

Nor would Jerry have him.  Jerry seems to like the yes man types who won't steal credit.

The Jags are very attractive. They are currently sitting with the #1 overall pick (Trevor Lawrence), and 10 additional picks. They will also have $100 million is cap space. That money goes a long way with a QB on a rookie deal. IMHO, they are the #1 threat to Texas for UM right now.

Yes

For fuck's sake, Mike McCarthy has 4 more years left on his contract. He has essentially a clean slate starting next season thanks to Dak's injury. It's more than likely he's going to coach through the end of his contract. Urban Meyer isn't waiting that long to re-enter coaching and it's been made abundantly clear that he's not coaching in the NFL.

This too.  McCarthy isn't going anywhere

counterpoint, have you ever been to Jacksonville?

The Meyer's seem to love Florida. If you're making the kind of money Urban will be making, you're gonna live somewhere nice.  They seem to be conservative and Shelley seems to love warm weather and beaches.

COACHING HOT BOARD

*This is not the official trilateral commission hot board — that is unknown. It is our stab at what their big board looks like.

We’re omitting the unicorns like Nick Saban, Dabo Swinney, and Kyle Shanahan. We’re also excluding Urban Meyer because we’ve been down that road and he’s a no. We do think they’ll make one last call to him, probably after getting down the road a ways with one of these candidates, though we don’t think it will change anything.

We‘ve also heard Kyle Shanahan has been made aware of UT’s interest, but we don’t feel that will materialize into anything worth covering. He just prefers the NFL.

Recency bias is unkind to the first three. Like love, anger, and tribalism, recency bias is also unkind to the human IQ.

1. Brian Kelly, Notre Dame: Best resume in the country for a coach who hasn’t won a national championship.

2. Matt Campbell, Iowa State: Has done more with less in the same conference UT has done less with more in.

3. Dan Mullen, Florida: “Creative” Urban Meyer. Also, “Angry” Brian Kelly. Probably fishing for a bag of money.

4. Gary Kubiak, Minnesota Vikings (OC): Great offense that fits the personnel; a 180 degree shift in personality at the top.

5. Gary Patterson, TCU: Mainly due to familiarity with Del Conte and the thought he’d be able win with UT level athletes.

6. Bryan Harsin, Boise State: Like Will Muschamp, Harsin left a good impression on Texas people while he was in Austin. He’s remembered for making chicken salad out of chicken ****. He’s done well at Boise State. They like his familiarity with the school. Does Harsin like his familiarity with the school? Chris Petersen’s name still carries some weight and Harsin is the closest thing to him.

TEAM

Similar to Texas under Mack Brown in 2012 and 2013, Texas will head to the Alamo Bowl for the second year in a row as they take on the Colorado Buffaloes on December 29th. This won’t be the typical bowl experience due to Covid. Rather than stay in San Antonio for 3-4 days before the game, the team will likely head down the morning of the game.

This will be a good chance to see some of the younger players, especially since Texas is a -13 favorite. Unless you’re in the playoffs, bowl games are as much about next year as the current one. Texas will look much different in 2021, but some familiar names may return.

Potential offensive returns: Derek Kerstetter, Denzel Okafor, and Tope Imade are all considering returning next season. Kerstetter, of course, is the prize of that group as he’d presumably be able to move back to right tackle with the emergence of Jake Majors at center. Okafor would battle for a starting spot at guard, but he wouldn’t be guaranteed to be a starter with the return of Isaiah Hookfin and Tyler Johnson having another year in the program.

We’re not entirely ruling out a return of quarterback Sam Ehlinger. We think it’s unlikely but not entirely out of the question depending on how things shake out in the next few weeks. He has accepted and invitation to the Senior Bowl but it’s not binding.

Potential defensive returns: On defense, end Marqez Bimage is expected to return after opting out in 2020. Edge is a big question mark heading into next year with Joseph Ossai entering the NFL draft early. In a bit of a surprise, Bimage may be the favorite to replace Ossai at JACK at this point. Bimage is down over 20 pounds since we saw him last. He’s right around 255 pounds currently. Recall, Bimage had to work to gain weight to play 4i but is now back to a more natural weight.

At this point, defensive end Jacoby Jones is also expected to return. If Bimage moves to JACK, then you’d have Jones, Vernon Broughton, and Ja’Tavion Sanders at defensive end.

With the graduation of Ta’Quon Graham, we’ve heard Moro Ojomo will move to 3-technique where he’ll share snaps with Alfred Collins. Ojomo came on strong this year at defensive end but defensive tackle is his more natural position.

True freshman Xavion Alford is mulling over the portal after Texas chased a safety in the transfer market. Another young defensive back may be looking to exit as well after the addition of cornerback Darion Dunn.

RECRUITING MATTERS

When looking to fill needs, the Texas staff is weighing the transfer market vs. the high school market post-NSD1.

Three players Texas definitely wants to sign:

L.J. Johnson, RB, Cy-Fair

Texas remains in a fight with Texas A&M, and is in constant contact with Johnson and his circle. Texas has felt confident for a while that they would win out at the end of the day, but Texas A&M is trending if one speaks with those around the Cy-Fair football team on a daily basis.

Keithron Lee, WR, Bryan Rudder

This one was/is trending to Texas big in recent weeks with a silent verbal almost assuredly having occurred. Lee could be on the verge of making a public commitment in the next 4-6 days. The Longhorns' chief competition is TCU, Texas Tech, Ole Miss and Tennessee. The Longhorns are also still evaluating what is left at WR at the high school ranks outside the state of Texas in case Lee goes in another direction.

Austin Uke, OT/G, Dallas Parish Episcopal

Texas OL coach Herb Hand offered Uke after the likes of USC, Vanderbilt, Stanford, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Penn State, SMU, Northwestern, TCU, Missouri, Maryland and Virginia Tech. It remains to be seen if the Longhorns can make up enough ground on Uke, but the academic/athletic combination is important to Uke’s mom. Uke is one prospect likely to make a student visit or two before committing to a school in January. This should help UT’s chances further.

On the radar:

Texas may feel like the odds are better to try and grab an edge transfer player than sign another high school prospect to develop.

Should Texas go the high school route, David Abiara (Mansfield Legacy) and Garfield Lawrence (Tyler Legacy) seem to be most likely. Keith Cooper (Dickinson) is a third prospect Texas kept tabs on all season due to his length and high ceiling. Abiara told IT he plans to sign in February, and the Longhorns were in contact in the days leading up to NSD1. Lawrence, a Kansas verbal, will see his offer list go up quickly in January with the senior video now out. Texas has kept tabs on Lawrence through Tyler Legacy head coach Joe Willis since he was hired to replace Kurt Traylor.

I have no idea why people are under the impression that Iowa State has been better than Texas over the past 4 seasons. I mean, other than the fact that people are just lazy and ignorant. It seems like someone spouts this every other day.

Campbell has had similar success as Herman with much less talent.

There. It's still an endorsement of Campbell. Why is it so hard to type?

Yeah, he deserves a bunch of credit for not being as much of a raging idiot as Herman. At no point during either of the past 2 ISU games did I think: "Wow. We're just outmatched here. ISU showed up to play and had a great game plan. They deserve a ton of credit."

More along the lines of: "We are so clearly better on both sides of the ball than this team it's fucking embarassing that we even have a chance to lose at the end of this"

No one's sitting here saying Matt Campbell's the number one coach in the whole worlds and should be first in line to be the next UT coach, but I'll be damned if I'm gunna hear much sass about him hypothetically taking the Texas job in comparison to Tom Herman when he has taken his recruiting classes that were ranked in the 40s and 50s and beaten Herman with them the past two years. Also, he's 3-1 against TCU the past four goes.

I'm sorry (I'm not), that's a big fucking deal.

Yeah well Tom Herman also beat OU's ass with lesser talented players. Charlie Strong beat people's ass with lesser talented players. Anybody we get coming up the ranks from G5 or lower level P5 will have beat somebody's ass with lesser talented players. For some reason that never seems to mean much.

You know what the fuck I mean. "Lesser talented" when discussing Texas/OU is not near the gap I'm talking with Tomert and Mattheus. You're talking Top 5/10 classes vs. 50s. FIFTIES!

If that Bobby timeline is accurate and its expected to all happen very quickly then we already have an agreement in principle with said party. I have serious doubts a current head coach would make that agreement if his team is in the playoffs. So its either a coordinator or another coach that is not currently employed but has reason to wait.

I know what the fuck you mean. I agree that Campbell does do that, as did K-State under Snyder, just saying that that gets brought up whenever a successful coach goes to a big job from Utah or Houston of Boise State or whatever and it never seems to translate...well except for the dude who has been mentioned a few times in this thread.

Right. He's taken them and beaten the guy that we want gone because he routinely lets shitty teams hang around or straight up loses games we should have no business losing (see 2019 and 2020 ISU games). ISU winning those games is less of a testament to Campbell's coaching ability and more of an indictment of how pathetic we still are under Herman. Giving him a bunch of credit for beating Herman two years in a row is almost a weird way of talking up Herman and Texas.

Yeah that is the other thing. Herman usually lets his opponents hang around with him. Tulsa, Texas Tech, Kansas, and so forth have almost beat us. Yet I don't think Matt Wells would be considered this genius coach if he hadn't let that 15 point lead disappear.

He's also beaten Patterson 3 out of 4, whose classes have finished ranked 20-30 spots higher than his.

So what you're telling me is, that Campbell(and co.) actually coaches up the talent he has, unlike our coach, but that it wouldn't be an improvement at Texas over Herman if he were getting a chance to coach top 5-10 classes, because the only reason he's able to beat Herman with Top 50 classes is because Herman sucks?

Again, I'm not saying Campbell is The One, but compared to Herman, I'd take him in a snap. Fortunately for us, I'm not sure we're down to Campbell vs. Herman as THE option, yet.

Of course he coaches up talent. He's done a great job of that at ISU. That doesn't mean he would coach up 4 and 5 stars the same way. Herman coached up talent at UH and then when you put the light on him all of his shtick and gimmicks wore out and his "talent" started going in the wrong direction.

There is a huge difference between winning 8 or 9 games at ISU and winning 12 or 13 games at Texas. Also between getting 3 stars to buy in and sign with you and getting 5 stars to buy in and sign with you. Campbell has never spent time at a big time program or anything close - he's also never recruited the state we would need him to lock down or manage a big time staff. Herman's credentials for taking the Texas job were just as good if not better than Campbell's. And we see how that turned out.

Who cares. TCU blows. Do you want to look at who all Patterson has fucked around and lost to in the past 4 seasons?

yeah, he gone.  I stated yesterday as a part of the day crew, its happening (firing Herman), just not on the Surly timeline.  This is why i think Urban Meyer is still in play and I wouldn't be surprised to see Sam return if that happens.

Yeah that's always been the case throughout all of this imho. It was never going to happen nearly as quickly as we wanted it to. And like I and others have said already, I'm perfectly fine with that timeline, esp if it means we get the right guy.

All of this is besides the point. We can do better. If we can't, we are probably fucked for the next 4-5 years or longer. Again.

I think we can do better also. I just can't stick myself in the "if it's down to Campbell just roll with Herman again" camp, at all. I'd rather take a gamble on another guy.
