After the market meltdown yesterday, Fox and the Republicans magically came around.

Post hoc ergo propter hoc?

I don’t know. I saw a stat on a news ticker yesterday or today that the market dropped 1,000 points 6 times last year. Someone upthread pointed out that it was also coincidental with the news coming out that all Fox News employees had to show proof of vaccination in order to come to work, a “vaccine passport” situation. Maybe that’s not the cause either but it seems more likely since they’ve been on the side that has consistently railed against the notion of anyone requiring you to show proof of vaccination for any reason.

Someone needs to see if some of these turds sold or bought a bunch of stocks again.

McConnell had polio as a kid.

He is speaking from experience.  A vaccine exists - fucking take it.

COVID deaths will not get into electorally significant numbers, so I don't think that is the reasons.  2MM deaths nationwide is less than 5,000 per congressional district.  Half don't vote. Then even if it is 2-1 Rs dying, that's like an 800 vote net gain.   You'd have to really nail the distribution exactly on a close race to matter in even a single congressional election.

I think they are out of an election year and don't feel like they are risking anything by supporting it now.  The delta variant makes for convenient excuse to switch because they can claim it is something different and not a change of position.

I have been meaning to say this forever, but you have one of my favorite usernames, and the accompanying avatar is the chef's kiss.  It would only be better if you had a sock named Golden God.

Agreed. The 1 percent made money during the pandemic. And to the extent the other 99% are screwed by this they can blame Biden, AOC, and socialism. Something else is going on.

The only person that could make some of these mouth breathers change their mind about the vaccine, is Trump. But even then, I don't think it would change many of their minds.

Many of them would just assume he was being forced to encourage vaccinations, like those few times when he allowed himself to be seen wearing a mask.

Dammit.  Not great news for me, but still going to wait for my doctor to give me the go ahead.

The new study has not yet been peer reviewed nor published in a scientific journal. But it is consistent with observations that a single dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine — which has a similar architecture to the J.&J. vaccine — shows only about 33 percent efficacy against symptomatic disease caused by the Delta variant.

Quote

“The message that we wanted to give was not that people shouldn’t get the J.&J. vaccine, but we hope that in the future, it will be boosted with either another dose of J.&J. or a boost with Pfizer or Moderna,” said Nathaniel Landau, a virologist at N.Y.U.’s Grossman School of Medicine, who led the study.

Other experts said the results are what they would have expected, because all of the vaccines seem to work better when given in two doses. “I have always thought, and often said, that the J.&J. vaccine is a two-dose vaccine,” said John Moore, a virologist at Weill Cornell Medicine in New York.

Dr. Moore pointed to several studies in monkeys and people that have shown greater efficacy with two doses of the J.&J. vaccine, compared with one dose. He said the new study was particularly credible because it was published by a team with no ties to any of the vaccine manufacturers.

boss just spent a week with people who tested positive over the weekend.  he can't get tested until tomorrow (too soon, i guess), and won't have results until thursday.  still coming into the office to send off a handful of emails that he could do perfectly well from his phone or home. 😡

While this information bolsters my statement earlier that if I had received JNJ I'd be looking for an mRNA boost, the below part of that article needs to be pointed out...this does not reflect VE in terms of clinical endpoints, and it does not evaluate a variety of different immunological components. So not definitive, but another data point adding on. Related question, where the fuck is the 2 dose arm of the JNJ study results...assuming the plummeting case numbers extended their timeline?

Although troubling, the findings result from experiments conducted with blood samples in a laboratory, and may not reflect the vaccine’s performance in the real world. But the conclusions add to evidence that the 13 million people inoculated with the J.&J. vaccine may need to receive a second dose — ideally of one of the mRNA vaccines made by Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna, the authors said.

The conclusions are at odds with those from smaller studies published by Johnson & Johnson earlier this month suggesting that a single dose of the vaccine is effective against the variant even eight months after inoculation.

If Trump would have come out of the gate with mandatory lockdowns, masking, vaccines, etc., do you think he would have received backlash from his opposition?

Isn’t that in line with what the CDC recommends as long as you are vaccinated and show no symptoms?

https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/vaccines/fully-vaccinated-guidance.html

Fully vaccinated people can:

  • Resume activities without wearing masks or physically distancing, except where required by federal, state, local, tribal, or territorial laws, rules and regulations, including local business and workplace guidance
  • Resume domestic travel and refrain from testing before or after travel and from self-quarantine after travel
  • Refrain from testing before leaving the United States for international travel (unless required by the destination) and refrain from self-quarantine after arriving back in the United States
  • Refrain from testing following a known exposure, if asymptomatic, with some exceptions for specific settings
  • Refrain from quarantine following a known exposure if asymptomatic

The rural counties of Texas between Abilene and Austin are on a not ideal upward trajectory. While not densely populated, they have some of the worst vaccination rates.

This map shows vaccination maps for 12+ yrs. Red (Seminole/Gaines Co.) has by far the lowest at 19%. There's a large Mennonite population there. Highlighted (Big Spring/Howard Co.) is where I'm heading tomorrow for my dad's memorial service. They're at 30% for 12+.

Here's the map for 65+ vaccination rates. Lightest shade means less than 60% of seniors are vaxxed. This one is obviously the bigger concern.

Is this modeling the hospitalization rates as we take on all the dumbfucks from around the state or just ATX residents. Cause I call bullshit on that status quo estimate if the latter is the case. Links would help.

Folks may be able to get one dose in, and they definitely should if they have not already, but they have missed peak immunization before delta ass fucks to them.

East and West Texas seniors, I fear, are gonna get steamrolled. Like I said last night, my 80-year-old mom told me she thinks only about half of her social group (all old) refuse to get vaccinated, which aligns with the 52% figure given on the map up above. It's shear madness. I'm honestly hoping no one shows up for the damn memorial service, because I don't want to somehow be culpable if anyone gets sick and dies from attending. I'm still waiting to hear back on the funeral home and church at least having a box of masks outside the doors or maybe a sign saying the family kindly asks you to mask up before entering.

I am sorry about your dad.

There aren’t a lot of medical facilities throughout the middle and west and southwest of Temple/Abilene/Waco.

For a county led by conservative MAGA assholes, Collin has come through on the vaccination front.

I've been on this position for a while now, but I think that Delta is going to rip through the unvaccinated.  If you are at high risk (age, morbid obesity, whatever) and unvaccinated, I think you are rolling the dice at odds I would not be comfortable with. Sorry about your dad man.  It's just shit piled on shit that your ability to memorialize him is undermined by all this.

I'm in a similar situation. My dad passed suddenly last Wednesday morning and we're having his memorial this weekend. So far 30 have RSVP'd and it's probably going to be closer to 45 in total attending I'd guess. My 86yo grandma can't get vaccinated because of her infusion schedule, but she'll be goddamned if she doesn't go to her son in laws funeral.

It's just another layer to the anxiety and tension of just trying to get through it all.

I'm sorry for your loss

Thank you. I appreciate that.

Once in the hospital, he actually got pretty good care. He just was too stubborn to go in and waited a little too late, I think. Plus, his primary care physician was a quack and had prescribed him HCQ. He was in for about a month from Thanksgiving until just after December. My sister, who's a pediatric PA up in Denver, dropped everything and checked in frequently with his doctors and nurses. She felt pretty confident that they were doing a good job based on what she'd been seeing up in Denver and frequently consulting with her doctor friends up there.

Btw, Lubbock is pretty much the medical center for most of West Texas. They've got a couple of big hospitals plus the Texas Tech Health Science Center.

Yeah, it sucks. My sister, niece who worked on a Denver Covid hospital wing throughout her first year working in healthcare, and I are going to be pretty distracted looking around at a bunch of unvaxxed, unmasked olds throughout the whole damn thing. We waited for months as a precaution. My dad was a deacon at their church, really active in the Masons, and a former teacher in the only high school in town, so pretty much everyone over a certain age knows him there.

Fuck. I'm really sorry to hear that. You've got my deepest condolences about your dad. There's been so much loss over the last year.

As we start to more broadly consider that boosters may be necessary, and the global vax situation is entirely different than in the first world, we need to consider how to optimize strategy in context of supply constraints again. I know that certain posters will not be able to get past regulatory dogmatism, but I hope that at this point we can just shelf some of that narrow minded bullshit:

Quarter-dose of Moderna COVID vaccine still rouses a big immune response

Results hint that dose stretching could help to address the world’s acute vaccine shortage.
