Message boards can easily devolve into an echo chamber as they run off people that have minority views. That's occurred here to a certain extent. Very vocal far right conservatives used to be more prominent here, especially on TOS, but they've slowly been ignored here so they left. Or moved to DT. I think many here couldn't stand defending Trump because they're rational enough to understand there is no defense.

I imagine that if you were a rational moderate or liberal on texags, you would get tired quickly of trying to argue against 99% crazy people.

I'd argue this message board has sustained a lot of healthy debate between people all over the political spectrum, with the lack of participation of right wing GOP types being an exception. But to me that's less about this message board having become an echo chamber and more that our current right wing is living in a different universe, and no message board can sustain two versions of reality.

That's what I'm saying. Obviously he's going to try it. But he would literally be making both sides of the exact same argument to the exact same 9 people at the exact same time.

Even a very right-wing court is going to be impossibly hard-pressed to find a way to justify that. Whichever case they argue first would be establishing precedent. They'd also have to know that they'd be sending the country down a spiral of unrest and possibly violence. I know we're about DOOM here, but I just don't think the Supreme Court is quite that cynical.

Yeah- here's the thing- they have no desire to lose their own prestige or legitimacy on the court, which is what a convoluted and tortured ruling like the scenario you are speaking about would entail.  They need some sort of cover and under that scenario there would be no cover. They aren't dying on any kind of hill for Trump.

This.  There's no place where both "veiwpoints" are discussed because they are completely different realities.  It's as if one faction was discussing plans for travel, including all means for transportation, in a world where gravity exists....and the other faction refused to acknowledge gravity at all and would only discuss travel methods that involved floating in Zero-G.  There's no fucking point in talking about car design, aircraft capacity, or any of that.  It's just pointless.

good, less bullshit to wade through. it was really stinky in here for a while

Can we talk about this again for just a sec?

One of the things I see on right leaning message boards is sneering references to the "Hollywood Cabal," the librul elite, the latte drinking, tree hugging Cali weirdos, the East Coast artsy fartsy crowd, well you get the idea. W/O going into the discussion for why that is and why it has been a 'thing' for a very long time, I'd like to say that I am happy to see some of that group stepping up and getting a little more visible. Celebs recording GOTV announcements may have chosen a more generic message, but even that can reach millions.

I'm guessing that halting drive through voting tomorrow hurts the GOP more.

The 20k they estimate might use the drive through voting tomorrow (depending on ruling) .... smdh. Harris County made early voting as accessible as humanly possible including multiple 24hr locations.  There was no reason to be waiting until election day other than you like waiting in lines.  But who likes waiting in lines in a car??? no one

I always laugh because my wife, a proud Evergreen State grad, who works for an enviro organization, can drink most of the Texans on this board under the table. Her weapon of choice: Woodford or Four Rose's.  Come for the East Coast artsy-fartsy crowd, stay for the crippling hangover.

Yes. Every year in St. Louis when I was up there in law school the court cases were to allow the polls to stay open later, in precincts where the dems got 90+ percent of the vote. You could just count on that being a thing. I assume it's probably not as much of a thing anymore now that Missouri went from being a swing state to pretty red.  Disagree fine. Continue to neg me fine- I'm not going to respond anymore b/c this is the horserace thread and I don't need this to go on a 3 page diversion with people arguing with each other on something beyond the scope of the thread. Sorry for the derail.  Feel free to have the last word or bring on the red circle of bukkake- whatever.

Oh you mean the we’re suppressing voters and the Dems tried to prevent that. How fucking stupid is that argument ?

This.  Or to bring it home to an actual thing, consider climate change:  At this point there should be a heated partisan exchange on how best to deal with it, policy options, tax credits, increase taxes, pinpoint study, infrastructure changes....the "how" of policy making, if you will.  We can't even do that due to "alternate reality".

It's also the dogpile, IMO. I've seen Surly members that lean right or libertarian but stay and have a substantial discussion.  As far as I can tell there few "rational moderate or liberals on texags" and regardless of how much they defend or stay on topic to discuss their opinion/perspective it is always a dogpile and usually limited to name calling, etc. Not very constructive for discussion.

Dude- anyone who is right of center is run off of this sub forum.  Look around. Other than a very occasional drive by there's basically nobody here who isn't totally and completely in lockstep with being 100% all dem all the time, and to the extent where that position takes any fire it's from the commie section of the board in bad_teammate.  This board is completely a left wing echo chamber.  100% total and complete. Like- put up a poll on anything you want (should the GOP be locked up, should they be tarred and feathered- or just summarily executed) and you will find the response here about 38 points to the left of America as a whole.  44-47% of the population tomorrow is going to vote for Trump and the left wing has made that so toxic on here that there's literally not a single Trump voter to be found b/c if you vote for Trump you are a terrible human being, beyond any shot of redemption, and you should, as a good American, totally and completely disavow anyone you know who has the audacity to vote for that guy.

I don't mind this board for a bit of time during election season b/c I'm fundamentally a contrarian, I try to live in a world of reality, and I also recognize the fact that you nut jobs are pretty smart on balance, and occasionally funny.  I balance any time spent here with RCP (usually reading both articles on any subject as that's what they do- post a point- counterpoint everywhere on their site) and as much red state as I can take until the stupid starts to really burn and I have to eject when I just want partisan filled fever dreams from the GOP instead of people singing in tune to the International.

In case you didn't get this- I'm saying this, "with all due respect" and b/c other than a couple of yall I like yall and hope for a world where we can be friends again, someday.

Also- when I say I'm fundamentally a contrarian that's not the same as a troll. I've never posted anything that wasn't true (even when it was talking about how I don't like barbecue or guns), I just like to push back where I see a shitty or undeveloped argument- and it's not particularly fun or interesting to me to nod my head.  It also doesn't advance the conversation too much to simply say "agree" but every now and again there's a post good enough where I just want to say- yep- this is right- and move on.

bs. you're still here regularly.

Dude, most of us are right of center.

Fucking this.  The Trumpist GOP has managed to characterize any position left of "shoot brown people on sight" as "socialist libtard hurr durr."  It's fucking insane.  The Overton Window is utterly fucked.

I take positions that drop me squarely in the traditional center right -- at least, in the rest of the world.  I tend to take an approach that matches up with the take of the editorial panel of The Economist most of the time.  If I was in the UK, I would be a "Lib Dem" (which is a center right party).  Here, I'm characterized as an insane member of a fringe leftist cabal.  EXACT same fucking ideas, but we are so goddamned warped in this country.

So when asked to point out Democratic attempts at voter disenfranchisement, WuLaw points to court cases the very purpose of which was to expand voting access.

It would only work if they were trying to move too far instead of equalize voting opportunities.

On this board- certainly.  In the real world?  Tomorrow- 45% +/- of your fellow American's are going to go out and vote for them. There's not a single bit of representation of that on this site.  not a centrist position. I'm willing to hear arguments that it's the correct position, but not that it's the centrist position.

I am right of center but I normally vote Democrat because I prefer to try and pull up others as much as I can regardless of my own personal  views. I would have had no issue voting for Romney or McCain if Obama wasn't such a badass. They ran up against a buzzsaw president. No one was beating Obama and rightfully so.

When 45% of Americans have gone absolutely batshit off the deep end, yes, we remain in the center.   The center remains where it was, in spite of the batshit insane attempt to shift the Overton Window to a position where the only acceptable conversation is how white supremacist you think things should be.

There’s not argument to be made that will make voter suppression, racism, misogyny acceptable. Apparently you’re willing to hear arguments about those things. My morals won’t allow me to do that. Maybe you should re-evaluate yours.
