"could lead to?"

That's the entire point.  Always has been.  The goal is to end public education.  Plenty of them have actually said that quiet part out loud.

The Republican Party wants to abolish public education.  If you vote Republican, you are voting to abolish public education.

My wife works for a public school and they are getting ready to do layoffs due to the underfunding by Abbott.  She is getting informed by her coworkers now on things I have been saying for years.  She went to private school and was predisposed to vouchers before this.

So remove our ability to control our own schools locally?

Let me guess:  the property taxes funding AISD will drop from $1.68B to, oh I don't know, $1.4B but our recaptured funds will hold steady at $0.85B?

They have already done that to HISD.

The assault on small government and local control just never ceased to outrage me. I guess this was one of the few "conservative" values I thought I could count on.

The local people should be told by big brother Abbott what they should do with their own schools that their money built. You want them properly funded? Tough shit.

I went to private school my entire academic career till I went to UT.  Yet...I've always supported public schools.  Because we live in a fucking commonwealth.  We don't just educate Johnny and Jane for their sake....we educate them for SOCIETY'S sake.

But we don't have any commonwealth anymore.  Anything that even hints at the common good is "COMMUNISMSOCIALISMMARXISMDEICRTLMNOP!"  The only things of any value are things that put the self above everything else.  And the only sure test of whether it's actually putting the self first is whether it's at the EXPENSE of the common good.

TLDR: the only way we can tell if something is good for ME is if it hurts YOU.  And that sort of thing is the only thing of value in our society.

When the state starts the voucher system, there will be an influx of new private schools. Charge exactly what they voucher is, offer crappy online education but decent sports and other activities. Toss in mandatory Christian (the real kind, not Catholic or Mormon) classes. The founder will make a fortune. There will be zero education but who cares. Look out OK, TX is coming for your education ranking.

What I’m looking forward to is the kid enrolled at a ~$7500 tuition school currently, said school bumps tuition up to $10k bc why the f not. Said kids family doesn’t get any voucher money and is out an extra 2500 plus having to go to school with the new undesirables

I assume you're online only so you can serve as many children of Texas citizens possible with fewer actual teachers. I mean, that's what all the new for-profit schools will look like, right?

Duh.  Online.  No vaccinations needed.  With the finest in AI instruction.  And we accept payments in crypto.

Negotiate a bulk subscription from Udemy, Coursera and Khan Academy. Then you don’t even need teachers. If everyone graduates with the same gpa, doesn’t that make everyone top 5% for UT or other top schools? Or maybe the top gpa costs a bit extra.

i would also suggest putting Don, Jr. on your board of directors and create a meme coin. Check all of the boxes and you’re be a billionaire by next year.

Sorry to let you guys in on this but Pearson is already set up for this. Connections Academy is already an online charter school. All they have to do is roll out a “private” option with small and interactive classes.

I’m already scouting stop malls in the area to open my own charter schools. If it has a planet fitness and a cbd/vape shop, extracurriculars are already taken care of.

Has Abbott said anything about this or is he gonna let Sec’y Kennedy handle it?

(AP) - The ongoing measles outbreak in West Texas has doubled in size to 48 cases, mostly in children and teens, making it the state’s worst in nearly 30 years.

State health officials said Friday in a news release that those who are infected are either unvaccinated or their vaccination status is unknown. Thirteen people have been hospitalized.

The outbreak has spread from its epicenter in Gaines County, with single-digit cases in nearby Lynn, Terry and Yoakum counties. Officials in the area also expect the outbreak to continue to spread in these communities.

South Plains Public Health District Director Zach Holbrooks said earlier this week that some of the cases appear to be connected to private religious schools

Recapture will increase to cover for the 100+ ISD’s whose home values are under the new $100K exemption and don’t owe any property taxes.

Three strikes and you’re out? Watch Texas spend more on prisons than it does on schools. Thinking of making your tax structure more regressive? Come to the Lone Star State and see how it’s done.
The latest brainstorm to afflict our friendly pols in Austin is school vouchers. Consider the beauty of this nifty scheme as it might eventually be worked out under the guidance of the Texas Lege. To improve the public schools (I swear, that’s how the advocates are advertising this lunacy):
■We give vouchers to all the students who are already in private or religious schools around the state. Right there, before anybody else even gets a voucher, we will have taken, say, $1 billion out of the budget for our public schools. Shrewd move, eh?
■We also give all the kids now in public school a voucher, thus theoretically enabling these children to attend the schools of their parents’ choice: Unfortunately, private schools might find themselves under no obligation to accept any of our kids; they could be rejected because of their religious affiliation, their disabilities, on the grounds that they’re not bright enough, because the school administrators don’t like their looks—any reason not specifically excluded by law.

It’s all the fault of the migrants. That’s why Abbott wants “his” 11 billion dollars back.

Abbott was just happy to be included.

Hilariously he is not evil or insane enough to ever be a national player. But he will try anyway.

Maybe Abbott should commit a crime to raise his profile and get more votes.  Something heinous, like parking in a non-handicapped space.
