For three, even if a kid doesn’t know they are gay by 3rd grade, when they do know, the environment will be much healthier for them if “gay people exist” is as normal as “redheads exist”, “black people exist”, “vegetarians exist” instead of something so apparently shameful that laws must be passed to avoid discussing it.

I'm gonna have to push back a little bit. Maybe we should pass a "Don't say vegetarian" law. Look, what those people do in the privacy of their own kitchen is their business, but I don't need them flaunting it at dinner when I order a steak.

Yeah if someone said I had to live the rest of my life gay or vegetarian, I would have to go into the tank for quite a while.

Choosing between taking human meat vs every other kind of meat isn't as difficult for me, even if the method of entry is different. My biggest quandary in this regard has been if I had to forsake beer or coffee. That brings the cold sweats to my body.

Nope. I’d be fine with just firing them. But I don’t think it’s a big ask for teachers to place those talks back on the parents for 4-7 yos.

When was this imaginary time when teachers weren’t doing this?

For example, if a 4-7yo child asks a question about their sex. In lieu of the teacher trying to explain this all, it should be sufficient for the teacher to send home a note with the child, letting the parents know they need to breach the subject, such as difference between natal sex and gender, with their child.

So you understand?  Nothing to do about checking a child’s parts.  Suggestion for education of sexual matters from the parents, at their discretion

So you are suggesting that for the first time ever teachers not talk to kids about sexuality and gender. Do I have that right?

I have a 5 year-old daughter. She refers to people as he/she/they if she doesn't know their preferred pronoun. She knows what it means to be trans. She understands that boys can marry boys, and girls can marry girls. We talk about these topics as well as race and privilege because I want her to be a good, caring and decent human later in life. I would want her teachers to be able to discuss these topics as well in a respectful manner, because I want her to have confidence that her teachers are a trusted source and are free to explain concepts she inquires about.

There's zero discussion of sexuality ever, because when we talk about her friend's parents that are gay, we talk about the content of their character and not their lifestyle. For the life of me, I can't understand how the right is hell bent on sexualizing this topic. It's a perverse fascination that occupies an unhealthy amount of their headspace.

You lost me until your last sentence.  Did you ever grow up around people on the religious right?  They are the biggest fucking hypocrites ever.  But I really don't blame them - it's like when a pederast begets another pederast.  It's a difficult cycle to break.  And save the rage - they're not pederasts themselves but when they're brought up a certain way that cycle is very difficult to break.  But in this case I think these discussions may help fattyflattie.  These need to be reasoned with - many will never get it, but it's still worth putting in the effort.

I guess, although that's not the context I meant.  I just meant "openly gay", or out of the closet, or some other term I may not be familiar with that will hurt @scottsins pussy some more.   I appreciate that, don't need any gotcha, nothing was meant in malice.

So do you consider you are “advertising it” when you talk about your wife at work?

Put another way, would you be concerned if your youngest kid’s teacher was getting married and told her class she was changing her name to match her husband’s midway through the year?

What about if that same teacher instead said she’s getting married and is changing her name to match her wife’s?

if you think there is a material difference between those scenarios, why?

Fucking over good teachers is more than a happy byproduct of the Republican anti-gay agenda. Their ultimate goal of course, as stated by the Texas Public Policy Foundation, is to defund/deligitimize public schools. There are still quite a lot of conservatives who don't directly agree because they have no recourse to educating their young'uns apart from public schools, but they are happily being used as pawns toward this end in the whole "parental rights" movement.

Sexuality from 4-7 yo?  I would think that is uncommon.

I think you are completely hanging up on a single word, from an anecdotal story of the 1 gay kid who wasn't "out" when I knew him, but learned later he had "come out".  I don't know what's right or wrong verb to use, but apparently announced is not it.

My youngest kid, probably.  I think it would cause her some confusion, and her current teacher is barely able to handle simple shit like sight words.  For something this nuanced, I wouldn't have any issue with a counselor or someone that knew specifically how to approach young kids about sex/gender/etc.  I'd much rather they mention it to my wife and I, and let us broach it with them.  If we had some same sex friends or couples we regularly had them introduced to, I would think they would have already noticed and it would be normal. I think the difference in scenarios only stems from the fact that it would literally be the first time for them to comprehend that scenario (same sex relationship). It wasn't that long ago they even learned about divorce, or single parents, and there were all kinds of questions about that.  It's just not common in our circle.

Because it's forbidden and naughty for them to think about such things, and just like a child that's been denied a toy or a treat or whatever, they will obsess over it.

It's unhealthy as hell the way many on the right fixate on peoples' sex lives.

It's not even close to being a reason why I bailed on the GOP in the early/mid-2000s, but if the fixation the GOP has on peoples' sex lives these days was on the same level back then that it is now, it could have easily been a top three.  I know the party hated the gays/etc. back then (boy did I know), but from my perspective, there were a lot of other things that were taking up a lot of the air in the room back then.

It’s the same reason porn sales are highest in the Bible Belt. Sexual repression drives interest. When I was in school I worked in telemarketing for the local cable company and we had a rep from HBO/Cinemax who told us that viewership of the late night skin flicks on Cinemax (aka “Skinemax”) was highest in the Bible Belt. I’ve heard numerous soldiers who fought in Iraq and Afghanistan report that the first thing their local fixers and interpreters asked them when they saw their laptops was if they could show them porn.

What’s nuanced about a female teacher getting married and changing her last name?

In what fantasy world are you living? When I was 5 years old and in kindergarten I used to play doctor with one of my classmates and her little sister who was 4 years old. We’d go up to their bedroom, get under the covers, take off our clothes and explore. That’s totally healthy and normal.

Vegetarians are as bad as Mormons - always wanting you to know the choice they made and trying to convert you.

That would be extremely naive. Kids that age have no filter and talk about whatever pops into their heads, including each other’s bodies and behaviors, and they bring it up with their teachers, so from time immemorial teachers have been pulled into these discussions as they begin to get a picture of the world.

This doesn’t return power to parents. It’s a non-solution in response to an imaginary problem for the benefit of political grifters. The only impact will be to erode the quality of public education, drive teachers out of the field, and make a small minority of kids and parents feel bad about themselves again.

So the book isn’t banned. One can get it. But the community through its leaders decided to remove it from school libraries.  Other communities probably have zero issue with the book.

It is banned in that school district. At least on the campuses most likely to house it.  It’s not like the high school library needs it.

The school district banned the book. Some children don’t have access to books outside of their school libraries. So there really should be significant reason for removing a book from them. Apparently, this picture book has one picture of a male couple with a child which is the reason it was removed.

Well aside from this zoomed in and grainy screenshot of a screenshot, if looks like they're talking about the statistical modeling of the data, not doing any analysis of it or commentary.

Did your chainmailer happen to have any more context or do y'all just stop once you get the talking point?

And to the point of banning and availability, it sets what's known as a "chilling effect", which is recognized by the supreme court as an attack on free speech and expression, and likely 1A violation.

After seeing all the crap going on in School Board meetings I’m thinking maybe parenting is too important to be left to parents.

It’s from CNN you dipshit

And chilling effect?  School employees have no first amendment protections in the schoolhouse.

What does this have to do with a school district banning a picture book?

We are talking about the Florida laws Desantis has signed.  This thread is about Desantis and Florida.  It’s 1250 plus posts.  6 or so concern the picture book one ISD removed from its libraries.   The rest don’t.  Mine is one of the rest.
