<conspiracy theory brain on> I honest to goodness think this was all staged

Maduro offers to resign in return for immunity, junta remains in place, Trump says no

Maduro is kidnapped, junta remains in place, Trump says he will work with the junta, and the opposition woman (who stole his Nobel Peace Price) is useless to him and out of the picture.

If the court finds him not guilty, or he is pardoned we are back where we were months ago without Trump getting his little special operation, it all smells. And sadly this stands more chance of success than a W style invasion. Only it changes absolutely nothing, all they have to be is a client state for as long as Trump lives.

The apparent “plan” that we’re going to send a bunch of Chevron engineers into the most lawless and dangerous country on Earth without any immediate security measures is honestly pretty funny in its complete stupidity.

Should be Exxon too, they were the other big player in Venezuela before they nationalized all their assets back in 2007. I would imagine Exxon is heavily involved in the planning for this takeover given their involvement in the first Trump administration.

Chevron bought Hess in July, which was the other US player in the Guyana offshore development with Exxon and the national company. It's a huge area of new oil, and the primary reason Chevron bought Hess. They are now operating right next door to the Venezuelan offshore oil deposits (who disputed the ownership of Guyana oil deposits) and should have no problem setting up deep water rigs to start extracting oil in the next few years. Should go even faster with the US "running" Venezuela and having little to no regulations enforced.

i know one top 5 that has a full plan ready to go, with a management team in place. they've been focused on this for over a year

my friend just got a huge promotion within the team recently, out of nowhere and outside the normal 'promotions' time line

Lulz....dude, just name the company. I doubt their corporate security is monitoring Surly.

It's all like a Tom Clancy novel gone terrribly wrong.

How the fuck was Andor so on the money? Man they got bigmad in the show thread whenever it was pointed how how parallel the show was to current events. And then quiet when Tony Gilroy said in interviews that was a real intent of the show

Anyone who enjoys drama TV shows should watch Andor, even if they hate Star Wars. It's one of the best shows in the past decade and completely outside the norms of the movies. The fascists running The Empire mimic the current US so well it's saddening.

tinidad and guyana will be a huge part of all this

I’m literally just hearing about all this right now. What in the actual fuck?

If Massie and MTG and some of the others bitching really cared, they could either switch parties or go independent and announce they will caucus with the Dems on military/national security matters.

Massie is definitely setting himself up as the Republican who wants to pick up the GOP after this administration is over, but he sure as hell could hasten things along right fucking now if only he had the courage to do what was necessary.

OK, so I get that following the law is not the administration’s jam. But how is ANY of this even remotely legal? We are just blowing through stop signs and red lights, and flipping the bird to the world in the process. It is not a “flex” to topple a regime. It is criminal.

But there is precedent.

Lots and lots of precedent.

I like how the dotard sends in operatives to invade a foreign country and kidnap its president and his wife. Yet when the dotard had the biggest war criminal since Pol Pot on American soil he literally rolled out the red carpet for the fucker.

Maybe the UK should send in a covert SAS group to remedy this little problem of ours.

The daily Texan legal brain trust has all of the pertinent case law curated for you if you want to head over there.

I'm no law-talkin'-guy but I'm pretty sure it's illegal to topple a government and take over their country without congressional approval.

Of course it's illegal to do that here too and it didn't matter.

I thought Venezuelan oil was the thick tarry stuff that’s energy intensive to refine. Not calling it swill, but swill compared to what’s coming from west Texas or Middle East.

Also, Marco Rubio is a POS. I understand doing it for the paycheck, but at one point he was somewhat respected. Now he belongs in front of the ICC along with everyone in this administration.

We turned on ABC news just because it was the first channel after FOX. Ana Navarro saved that broadcast from the usual stupid template. She spelled out the big picture. One point she made was that there was a winner of the last election who was blocked from taking office. A legitimate government was right there for the installing.

The US had an actual chance to invade another country for good purpose and be cheered by the citizens. Pluck Maduro. See the crowds cheering. Place a Venezuelan leader who has been voted in. Exit.

For the first time since WW2, we actually champion freedom and do the right thing! Sadly, it doesn't fit our brand.

As I watched the replay of the press conference, I was recalling when that would be run on all three networks with virtually no other options for viewing. Everyone would have seen the babbling, lying, POS embarrassing himself and his country. There'd have been an outrage, I think. I wonder if that were the case today, how much would be different in politics with everyone more tuned in.

We talk like it's already privatized. They stole our private propert and we demand compensation! This the very essence of what was so wicked about our Latin American policies. Take the national wealth at gunpoint.

If American corporations lost shit in Venezuela, they made bad business decisions and are the only ones responsible for the loss. We shouldn't use the Army to protect the money of our oligarchs.

As Colin Powell said, you broke it, you bought it. We’re in this for billions.

Trump may have to resign over this.

Hopefully only billions

Of course he was lying. We all knew he was lying. It was never a question.

But seeing this infuriates me, because it reminds me how fucking stupid so many Americans are. Who falls for this idiotic shit? Apparently, tens of millions of our fellow countrymen, including most of my extended family. I can’t even be in the same room with those fucking morons anymore.

Maybe the fact that a convicted habitual criminal is running the show has something to do with it? The mind boggles...

As someone who married into a Venezuelan family, I’m not opposed to this if done right, they need to make sure not to pull an Iraq and instead somehow keep the bureaucrats in place. The lack of mass casualties so far is heartening.

I'm more worried about what happens to cuba. that island has much less infrastructure and is about to collapse. we need to be ready for a massive humanitarian mission. The world would be a much better place if both countries take the German/Japanese path over the next decade.

Amen!!

So, Europe can kidnap Trump and put him on trial in The Hague? The precedent has been set.

Don’t worry guys, this time we’re going to do the Bay of Pigs again but correctly by much more competent people in charge.
