Honest question: what in our long history of foreign adventurism gives you any reason to think it’s even conceivable that we will do this right and not “pull an Iraq?”

hopefully Panama.

The thing about Panama is that Reagan and then Bush were working with Congress and getting Congress involved. The US military spent years gaming out scenarios and the politicians developed plans for once Noriega was captured or killed. That didn't happen here.

Plus, in the run-up to the invasion, Panama declared war on the US, and Panamanian forces killed a US Marine Corps officer and captured a US Navy officer and wife.

Panama had its issues, but it was a lot more clear-cut than this operation, where we have no plans for what to do now that we captured Maduro.

They’ll probably have Maduro fight Jake Paul on the White House lawn.

This is the politics page, after all, and the politics are bad for this Administration.

It did nothing to build any public support for this. And there is none. So Democrats will be in attack mode. And generally their attacks are going to be consistent with the misgivings of a majority of Americans, who are a people since Vietnam who are typically pretty skeptical of foreign adventurism (though they typically come around to it after the government makes a case).

Republicans have none of their personal credibility wrapped up in this. No Republican in Congress voted for this. They’re free to point that out. And they will. If this goes south, Ted Cruz will absolutely use this to attack JD Vance. MTG will attack Marco Rubio.

Contrast that with the Iraq invasion. John Kerry and Hillary Clinton voted for that shit. So in 2004, they couldn’t credibly attack Bush in the issue. In the meantime, the Republicans stayed unified on it until well after it became a serious political problem.

Look—I’m not give you any nonsense about the Constitution. Save that for the DT. There’s a real political reason you inform Congress and get just a little buy-in. But these people are too stupid to understand that.

I don't think they feel the need to build any public support for anything, anymore. They know, and it's a fact, that at least 40- 45% of the people who actually participate in our political system will support absolutely any outrageous bullshit Trumpco dishes out because there is always a justification that's both simple-minded and irrationally aggressive that's enough for the mindless to parrot. The few resisters on the right will get run over with the usual "do you support America or are you a traitor" type bullying. It's over. We all said that Nov. '24 was the test of democracy. It was. "We" lost. Short of means that few of us want to realistically contemplate, the sane among us, including the minority party, are in a position of learned helplessness now despite being technically in the majority numbers-wise. Wish I weren't so pessimistic.

One other thing - we dissolved the Panamanian military. We do that in Venezuela, we are creating a fuckton of guerillas who are going to be looking to get paid.

And, we already had a lot of presence in Panama, militarily, and soft power. Hell, we practically installed Noriega.

so what is actually going on there today? is there a war being fought? no boots on the ground? my impression is "people are talking" and I am sure, the people on their side understand they must concede everything to stop this war?

This is a good post.

But regarding your last paragraph, I don't think the Trump administrations is too stupid to understand the politics. I think they simply don't give a shit.

They have absolute power and are wielding it. Every single they do is for themselves and their wealthy friends. Regular people - including diehard MAGA - mean absolutely nothing to them. We are navel lint.

I don't think we're gonna have to wait until 2028 to see if this country is still effectively under Trump's rule moving forward. The mid-term election in November will tell us everything. And IMO nothing is off the table. They might rig it, they might cancel it, maybe we get a free and fair election. We'll see. But our future will be decided in about 10 months.

And Congress is too fucking feckless to establish their own rights to rein in the executive. This administration simply just does what it wants. I don’t think they even ask internally about the legality of what they’re doing. Because why ask, when they’re just going to do it anyway. And we’re letting them.

Yep. The Trump Administration doesn't give a flying fuck about Congress. Even Mike Johnson and every other elected Trump bootlicker is on the outside looking in. They're not in the club. The only members are people that Trump personally appointed and his wealthy friends/donors.

This. There are two reasons for the regime not to pay attention to politics:

1) They are stupid.

2) Politics doesn’t matter, because the support of the people/voters is simply irrelevant. The regime has power, and will never be giving it up.

In this case, it’s option 2, although option 1 is also true. Imagine how a right wing authoritarian regime intent on having power for all time would act, and it’s how this regime acts. Believe what you are seeing.

I would be terrified shitless if they where half as competent and/or Donshit was immortal.

Instead it is dog and pony show. But the experiment did fail regardless. There needs to be a second republic one dedicate to eternally vigilant against fascism.

Lol @ thinking they will be getting anything cheap after the first wave of corporate looters gets their hands on the wealth of the country. The Venezuelans celebrating "libertad" in the streets are going to get a cold hard lesson in capitalism soon too.
