2022 Transfer Thread - It's the End of the World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)

This is, btw, the best argument for grabbing short term portal rentals for 2022. If they're the difference between getting Arch, Owens, Cook, et al., then obviously do it.

2023 is a pie-in-the-sky, everything has to be completely perfect for us to compete for a title - Ewers 3rd year, Xavier 3rd year, Brooks/Blue at RB, and some combination of Connor, Karic, the 7 OL from the 2022 class, and a portal or two might give us a solid enough line to put up a ton of points. Then you have to hope that you can get production from Finkley, Murphy, K Ross, Jordon Thomas, Tapp, Bledsoe, Burke - along with some spin downs at LB or a portal or two there, and hope that this year's young secondary pieces put it together.

More realistically, though, you're probably building for 2025 - and hoping that some of the 7 OL we just signed stick around to be 5th year seniors, and you somehow sign Arch Manning who's in his second year starting, along with guys like Rueben Owens, and Johntay Cook, etc. and hope some others from 2022 can contribute meaningfully.

As you get closer to those windows, you can make a better estimation on your ability to compete, and that's when you start filling in the missing pieces with portal. Otherwise, since the hit-rate on high school 4 stars is probably something like 30%, you need to sign as many high school kids as you can, so

Planning for 2025 is insane. There's plenty of cases that show elite coaches can rebuild programs in 2 years. Talent cycles change so fast in CFB. There's no reason to already have resigned yourself to four years of mediocrity under Sark before maybe competing. Get it together man.

Well the potential negative for playing the wrong OL is your QB getting FUBAR'd so I have to disagree. And FWIW I generally agree with how the staff handled the portal/high school numbers back in December when the portal options were much less appealing

I feel like you spend enough time on the recruiting board for me to say your takes on this page are baaad. You think Arch is going to come play for a team that misses a second straight bowl under Sark? Johntay Cook? Rueben Owens?

Literally everybody wants Sark to build our program with high school recruits. The point is that he's not going to be able to do that unless he can show progress in the win column this year. If he goes in-home in late December while other schools are prepping for their bowl games, no recruit is going to listen to him say, "Well the reason we only won 5 games this year is because I'm developing our OL for 2023 and 2024, trust me bro"

Whats the record with a transfer vs without? If you are saying that Texas wins 5 this year without transfers coming in, that is your opinion. I happen to think your low, perhaps you are setting the bar low to frame your argument. I have never said Texas should not go into the portal. Actually said Texas needed a QB, LT, and Edge player from the portal. I just pointed out the guys like Dunn, Davis, and Thornton were negatives and the portal is not the panacea that people in here are pretending it is. There is risk and reward.  I am not sure Texas has gotten a single transfer that has made an All-conference team.

Because you're taking developmental time away from the freshmen OL. The potential positives for playing freshmen exceed the potential negatives.

A true freshman offensive lineman’s development is not in any way hampered by not being able to immediately start. That’s TexAgs mixed with meth level retardation.

yeah, the idea of taking away development is absurd. Most OL benefit from not having to play right away, and there’s no evidence to show development is hindered by not starting immediately, especially for guys who aren’t even EEs.  If anything, history shows that a lot of true freshman form bad habits and hurt development by playing before they’re ready.

Also shoutout to @Codaxx for showing how truly absurd his reasoning is when it comes to transfers. Claiming it wasn’t worth it to take Calvin Anderson and win 10 games when we otherwise would’ve been starting Nickelson at Tackle all year and getting our QB murdered.

Campbell, Banks, Umeozulu, and Williams aren't coming to Texas to RS. They are likely on the 2 deep the minute they step foot on campus. It's hilarious that you guys continue to bitch about Texas not bringing in a portal guy to take away from those dudes PT.

And there it is. For anyone questioning this debate, it’s now been settled. Taking a transfer OL is undoubtedly the right way to go.

1st- I thought Anderson was 2019 and Texas won 8. I admitted that mistake.

2nd- I have wanted a LT. I just don’t think RT is a huge need.

if you want to call me out , please do it correctly and directly

This Hornlover guy is next level. He thinks we should be roster managing our 5-7 team for a longer term play at a national championship. We should skip the step where we try to beat Kansas and play for the 2025 national championship. Never mind that nothing we are advocating actually does anything to slow that process down

Jesus Christ, who let all these smooth-brained idiots in from the football board?

It's not that hard of a concept. You have to look at the state of the current roster, and try to determine when your window is to compete for a championship. It's clearly not 2022. Too many holes on the OL, the DL, the LBs, and inexperience in the secondary. And we've already used 30-something counters in this cycle.

Sure, we can add one or two players from the portal. But, while adding grad transfers (like Mathis) or Juniors/Seniors (like Caleb Johnson) might help out in the short term, it's likely only going to help turn a 7-5 team into an 8-6 team. Hell, maybe even 9-5. But, then you start next year with holes in your roster again, and you've got limited experience for the (hopefully) talented young players on your roster. So now you have inexperienced players in 2023 , and the cycle continues.

Or, you can set your attention on recruiting high school kids, and load up on 4stars and 5stars that can play significant minutes as freshmen/sophomores and be ready to contribute in a couple years.

Now, if a 5-star redshirt freshman OL hits the portal market then you go after him. He can help your program out immediately, and also for the next 2-3 years.

I’m constantly amazed how stupid people can be while proclaiming others are being being idiots. I don’t know why I’m amazed after all these years, but I am.

I figured there's no way in hell somebody can be as obtuse as you, unless it's futureman-level trolling.

Our 2018 and 2019 classes are garbage, and nothing can be done to fix that. Which means 2022 is not realistic for trying to win a title.

2023 there's an outside chance, as I mentioned, but shit will all have to go right.

If Ewers leaves, 2024 is unlikely to happen. Maybe he stays? Most likely, he's gone and we're breaking in a new QB.

Which makes 2025 the best shot for us to have a window.

None of that skips the "beat Kansas" phase. If you continue to build your roster correctly every year, you'll continue to get better and do something like: 2021  5-7, 2022 8-4, 2023 10-1 , 2024 9-2, 2025 12-0

But if you skip the step of loading up on high school players and having a plan with roster management, you end up like aggy and go 8-4 every year (or worse if your starting qb sucks), while constantly plugging holes via the portal.

There’s more ways than the two paths you described. With the OL and DL haul from 2022, QE, and the other portal pickups so far , I’d say Sark is building for this year AND the magical 2025 of your dreams.

There is nothing we can do to fix the current offensive line. The sins of 2018 and 2019 cannot be addressed until 2025. This whole transfer portal fad that the likes of Alabama, USC, Oklahoma and Ohio State are using to upgrade positions will pass.

This has to be the result of huffing paint just before trying to absorb the meaning of more than 3 words in a sentence.

If you're still trying to figure out why we aren't selling out to win in 2022, then bless your heart. There is no amount of portal help that's going to turn 2022 Texas into a title contender. Period.

First of all, just wow. Whoosh.

Second of all, contender? You mean like national title? Most of us just want to not fucking suck and lose to Kansas next year. If we can upgrade any position, we should do it.

Lol it’s not like there’s a salary cap or anything. Teams are always trying to improve. It’s CFB dude, everyone is doing everything they can to win— tanking does absolutely nothing for you.

I was just hoping for a couple of OL transfers that could help get to 9 wins and maybe play above expectations for one year and get to 10.

I think we can get to 8 wins with a legit LT transfer, Mathis, and a decent ILB. Even then, I think 7-5 is just as likely and 6-6 is on the table with some bad luck. This isnt the year, too much to fix in my opinion.

If we get Hall we’d have as much offensive firepower as anyone. I’ve seen more done with less. BlowU won this conference every year with shit on a stick defensively.

Alabama, Oklahoma, Oklahoma St, Texas Tech, and Kansas St. are all losses in 2022

ULM, UTSA, West Virginia, Iowa St, TCU, and Kansas are wins

6-5 when Baylor comes to Austin the Saturday after Thanksgiving

Beat Baylor and Sark goes to the AutoZone Liberty Bowl in Memphis to play an SEC "also-ran" like Ole Miss, Arkansas, Missouri, etc.

Lose to Baylor and its the Guaranteed Rate Bowl in Phoenix to play a B1G "wanna-be" like Nebraska, Maryland, Northwestern, etc.

either way Texas won't see eight wins in 2022

There is a cap on scholarships. If you use them for portal rentals, then you can't use them on highschoolers.

It's not tanking to choose resources that will help you long term (like young offensive line talent) over short term rentals.

OK fine, Texas Tech is a win, then Iowa St is a loss.  Still 6-5 going into the Baylor game.

Sark will end up 7-6 after the bowl mark my words

This Mims guy. It was mentioned up thread that he came from a small school, one that ran it a lot.

Read an article or two from the Georgia perspective. He only played 8 games last year. In January there was some question about whether he might move inside for playing time. Ironically another 5 star olineman from Georgia hit the portal per one of these articles highlighting the point that not all 5 stars hit sooner rather than later.

How much further along is he than Kelvin Banks at this point? And more specifically in the pass game.

Look, smartest guy in the room, we’re trying to beat Kansas IN THEIR HOUSE. We’re not looking for titles in 2022. We don’t make a bowl game again and I’m not sure Sark survives. This team needs help now, and every HS OL recruit is a project until proven otherwise.

Maybe you should check the bust rate of OL before you start passing on seasoned players. Are they better than what we have? If so, take them.

If any of the incoming freshmen can immediately grasp the game at this level, and match up with the strength and conditioning of opposing players, they will play at some point this season, no matter what. This pussyfooting around worrying about hurting the feelings of signed recruits is a great way to build a weak ass program. *Or in our case, maintain.

With a left tackle, our offense will be a lot better this year - QB, WR, and TE are already better. On defense, DB is better than last year. Our weaknesses are at DE and LB. Mathis plus a LB can fix those problems. I think 7-5 is our record with what we will bring with today's roster. With an OT, LB, and DE I think we can get 3 more wins. I also think that is what Sark needs to guarantee job stability. At 7-5 there may be too much talk for Sark to continue to build a strong roster through 2024 recruiting and it may even hurt 2023 recruiting.

I’m more in the @Rockethorn1978 camp. Maybe it’s the offseason Kool-Aid, but I think with those 3 additions 9-3 is a real possibility, though not a probability. Mostly because of how bad this conference looks to be this year. I think it is as down as I can ever remember a Big 12 field. If we can go 7-2 in conference that should put us in Arlington, playing for “a” championship, even if it is to be King of the Dipshits.

FWIW, Gerry says we are going to be pursuing Mims and Hall.  I’ll be surprised if we can get Mims on campus. He seems like a small town South Georgia kid who won’t go very far from home, but if he is considering Miami and he’d have to sit a year to stay in the SEC then who knows?

I'm more optimistic about our chances against KU this year with the squad we currently have. Perhaps that optimism isn't fully warranted. Maybe it's just the kool aid talking.

This entire thread has devolved into absurdity. Does the guy improve the talent level of the roster? That’s the only question. If yes, you take him. If not, you pass. All of the other histrionics mean fuck all. Nobody is stunting the development of a summer enrollee freshman offensive lineman. I’d recommend taking this entire line of discussion to the Shit My Wife Says thread.

Fwiw, my understanding, which is based more on informed speculation than direct information, is that the concern isn't the stunting of the development of the class of 2022 offensive linemen, but that one or more of them will potentially transfer away or ask out of their NLI if we add transfer OL, because they were told they'll have a chance to come in and compete right away. If true, the staff is weighing the value of specific OL transfers vs potential 2022 OL attrition, which is likely a primary reason for why Mims is the first OL transfer we've heard of Texas even having interest in since Texas decided to take seven (!) high school OL recruits

If we're telling O'line recruits we won't take portal guys or any more recruits at their position,  we are doing it wrong.

Are we getting a commitment from a recruit in return that he won't portal out.  I doubt it,  and even if we do it wouldn't be worth much.

I can see maybe telling a generational QB that he will be the only recruit at his position in that year,  and even so how much value does that kind of deal have.

CTJ is too happy today. If we are worried about freshmen wanting out of their LOIs, maybe we just need to portal Max Merrill to appease them and take CTJ over the top in glee. But just to bring things back to reality, I dare CTJ to name our second 5 offensive linemen.
