Except that this isn't a Trump thread, it's a Joe Manchin thread.

This particular exchange was about about Sack accusing Penelope of being a "leftist" or some such and then talking about how left the Democratic party has shifted.

Really, it all comes down to Trump, though.

Johnny Sack wants you to believe that a party made up largely of college educated professionals in the upper 10% are closet socialists looking to confiscate private property.

OK.

Immortal, I like you but disappearing during the Trump debacle completely then showing up and taking pot shots during the next administration seems wrong.  I left the R’s and D policies cost me a pretty penny, but I sleep fine at night.  I’m not saying the D’s have shit figured out but not admitting the other side is a hot mess seems disingenuous.

OK.

Donald Trump quite easily won the higher income brackets against Biden.  Trump losing support from low income types is how he lost.

Quote

3. Trump lost support among low-income voters, but gained with the rich Voters from wealthy households swung further towards Mr Trump in 2020. Just over half of those whose family income was more than $100,000 a year supported the president, compared with 45 per cent in 2016. By contrast, those making family incomes of less than $50,000 voted Democratic by an 11.5-point margin (55 to 43), compared to an 8.2-point Democratic margin in 2016 (50 to 42).

“In recent months, Manchin has told several of his fellow Democrats that he thought parents would waste monthly child tax credit payments on drugs instead of providing for their children, according to two sources familiar with the senator’s comments.

Continuing the child tax credit for another year is a core part of the Build Back Better legislation that Democrats had hoped to pass by the end of the year. The policy has already cut child poverty by nearly 30%.

Manchin’s private comments shocked several senators, who saw it as an unfair assault on his own constituents and those struggling to raise children in poverty.

Manchin has also told colleagues he believes that Americans would fraudulently use the proposed paid sick leave policy, specifically saying people would feign being sick and go on hunting trips, a source familiar with his comments told HuffPost.”

Well he’s something. He is not representing his constituents well at the moment though. They need all the monetary help they can get in that state. I don’t hate the man, but he’s not doing things that help the people who need it most.

For people like me, it's not about right or left, it's about Republicans debasing themselves to Trump, to the detriment of the nation.

It is also about taking their policies from "disparate impact" discrimination to "intentional, invidious discrimination."  The GQP is about one election away from just running around screaming about n*ggers and sp*cs taking your shit, they've already come mighty close and forget about the ragheads.

Because I can't go along with either of those, and the GQP isn't going to get serious about spending or taxes, or reining in the market, I might as well get on board with some progressive shit.

The future of the GOP is as a socially conservative, anti-immigration working class party more in common with Fidesz, Law and Justice and Vox parties in Europe than Canadian or British Tories. I was a Pat Buchanan primary voter and campus campaign volunteer in 1996 and we were considered fringe. Now the party belongs to us and the Bush/Cheney/Neocon/McCain/RINO wing are either dead or nearly extinct. Trump upended the party and toppled the GOP ancien regime. DeSantis/Hawley leading the party with Catholic integralist inspired policy goals. Dollops of Vermeule, Drehrer, Ahmari. Unleash state power for the good of society. An illiberal future.

When that child tax money stops hitting accounts in a few weeks, that should get democrats energized. A family with two kids gets $500 - $600 a month. That’s serious money to a whole lot of Americans that is now gone.

This.  In spite of how it works and the backside of it, it was a good thing.  And now it's potentially scrubbed.  And it affects poor on both sides.    It's just going to muddy the water even more, but in the end it will be Manchin's head on a platter.

If they don't vote, then why are we seeing so many voter suppression laws and gerrymandering?  Maybe in spite of decades of poll taxes and literacy tests, American minorities still believe their vote can matter, and want to cast them.  Scares the hell out of white supremacists like you, doesn't it?

I guess government subsidies isn't considered interference.  Only regulations fall under that heading.

And it seems Manchin might have got his feelings hurt.  There's an audio clip of this out there, and it sure comes across as someone more interested in looking tough than actually doing his job:

Manchin confidant says Biden put his FAMILY at risk with 'personalized' attacks as it's revealed White House ignored his request to be left out of statement where it named him three times

  • Joe Manchin tore into White House staff and his fellow Democrats, blaming them for his decision to vote 'no' on Biden's signature Build Back Better bill
  • He accused Democrats of badgering him and beating 'the living crap' out of him as they tried to get his vote
  • He also said White House staff know the 'real reason' he's a no on the legislation
  • 'It's not the president,' Manchin said. 'It's the staff. And they drove some things and they put some things out that were absolutely inexcusable. They know'
  • 'They can't just beat the living crap out of people and think they'll be submissive,' he said of Democratic leadership

Article gets into some good depth about the back and forth during negotiations and afterwards.

Yeah, well: When Democrats lose, however, it is the same stereotype – black people didn’t come out to vote. But in the last three presidential elections, black voter turnout was 59.6% in 2016, 66.6% in 2012, and 65.2% in 2008. The voter turnout for black people in each of these elections was higher than Latinos and Asians and higher than whites in 2012.
