The cotton bowl is a shit hole

What a weird opinion to have. My parents raised me on Texas football and took me to the TX-OU game in the Cotton Bowl many times.
Now I am raising my kids on Texas football and I'm taking them to the TX-OU game in the Cotton Bowl almost every year.
They love it and wouldn't have it any other way.

What a weird family tradition to have.

See how that sounds?

Yes, it's a shit hole.  Completely agree.  That and the state fair is what makes it great.  Like others said, try some actual life planning and not try to eat lunch there on $12 beer and nachos.  (I ate a big breakfast and drank a ton of water before because I knew it was going to be hot.)

My only complaint is that they should have had more water than beer considering it was hot as balls.  The mobile vendors only had beer and from what we were told, everyone was out of water by the 3rd.  (That could be wrong or just in the concession stand closest to us.)

From what I saw, with the electronic tickets being used yet nobody actually scanning them after halftime (just had to flash the pic of them from your phone), you could text a pic of your ticket to however many friends you wanted to and they could walk right in

This definitely happened. Walked outside the stadium to get 6 bottles of water from the the 2 coupon stand and brought them back into the stadium and they never gave me a white ticket to get back and never asked to see my game ticket screen. And I walked back in through gate B even though left from gate C.

Security was crazy lax and we were just hoping nothing crazy happened. Even when walking through the metal detectors I set them off with my keys in my pocket and they just waved me through.

Yeah that was unexpected. I was able to text photos to my parents/family on my 5g phone with very little delay. It was crazy good.

The best thing about the heat is I was able to drink like 5 bottles of water before and during the game and didn't have to piss once

OU and Texas are currently in the process of leaving the conference that they have co-run for a few decades so they can both throw a few more million bucks on the pile by joining the SEC. If you think that they won't entertain moving it to Arlington when Jerrah backs up the Brinks truck for them, I've got news for you...

Texas don’t need the money.

They didn't move to the SEC for money.  They moved because a system has been set up in which anyone outside the SEC has a vastly more difficult path to a championship.

ETA: If the game can't be held at the Cotton Bowl, then it should go home/home.  Fuck any plan that puts another dollar in that scumbag piece of shit waste of skin cocksucker jerry jones' pocket.

Yes I know.

They also didn't "need the money" that they are getting to jump to the SEC, but here we are.

We're moving to the SEC because our best (and only remotely decent) home game of the year is against OSU at fucking 11AM.  No offense but if your marquee home game is OSU your home schedule sucks ass.

There won't be any news as it won't happen. Castiglione and Del Conte could do (and already do) a lot in the name of the dollar but they'd never risk the massive backlash and alienation that would ensue. The two teams meet each year in a game with a unique and unmatched environment that is the envy of not only the college football world but the world of sports, period.  You do not mess with perfection. The unfiltered shit storm that would ensue would be unparalleled and both ADs would be tarred and feathered.

Unless you’ve been associated with the game as a player, alum or someone directly affiliated with either university, you probably don’t understand the level of affinity and passion that people have for Texas / OU in the Cotton Bowl.  Moving it isn’t going to happen. Doesn't matter who, what or how much tries to convince them to do otherwise.

If they invested that much, it shouldn’t be a shithole.  Of course it might have need up in politicians and their contractor supporters pockets.    Happens with school districts in South Texas a whole bunch.

Thats exactly what happened. Contractors did bare minimum, paid off key council members and pocketed the rest. The Afgan "government" aint got nuthin on Dallas county..

There's plenty of attempted corruption in Dallas.  A lot of it gets exposed, too.

I haven't heard anything about outright corruption regarding Cotton Bowl upgrades.  From what I know, they were structural, the addition of seats, "club seating," and press box and locker room upgrades.  Other than the seating, not a lot of fan-visible things.  I think they re-paved the concourses.

Nah.  It was more about not being left out.  When fox and ESPN passed on renegotiating the contract early we had to act

You had to act for what reason? Left out of what?

Texas and OU would never be "left out" of anything.  The Big 12 could have added the four teams they are planning to add, kept OU and Texas and it would easily be the 2nd best football conference, top-to-bottom and both schools would be just fine.

Texas and OU left because joining the SEC guaranteed them more money. It's OK. There's nothing wrong with it. Just own it.

There's no guarantee those other four teams would've been added if Texas/OU hadn't already said they were jumping ship. Bowlsby and everybody else were being reactionary again. They went through this song-and-dance 4-5 years ago, looked at the same batch of teams and said, "nah, we're good. We like our yearly cut and don't want to split it up 2 or 4 more ways." Then word came out that the conference was rebuffed when we reached out to proactively renegotiate the current TV deal. Any new deal was going to be for considerably less money. So Texas/OU bolted.

"More money" is a benefit to the move but it wasn't the prime mover.  They left because the Worldwide Leader has spent the last decade or so planting it into everyone's brain that the only real college football being played in this country is in the SEC.  Every fucking game in that league is like an SEC infomercial.  It's constantly being driven home.  "SEC size."  "SEC speed."  That grueling "SEC schedule."  The message was received by both the players choosing where they want to play and the media who select the top teams in the country via the polls.  We didn't have any choice but to make the move.

That's laughable.  They're moving for the money.

You think OU is going to have an easier path to the playoff?  They've been almost as automatic as Bama, Clemson, and tOSU without being nearly as good.  If we ever got our shit together, they'd have to worry about us, but in the BigXII the Texas/OU winner would continue to be a lock most years.

It was a reason.  It was not THE reason.

Any thoughts on WHY they weren't nearly as good?  Ponder on that question and you'll realize why the move happened.

Well, I’m not trying to drop some advanced meteorological analysis. I’m just saying, in general, I feel like an extra week could help. Late October is generally cooler than early October.

The game was played on the first Saturday of October in 2010. Why not the third Saturday?

it wouldn’t matter if they played in the middle of January; game day would be 93 and not a cloud in the sky, the weekend before or after would be 72, nice breeze and partly cloudy

Metal detectors are worthless. You need a brisk line, video surveillance of line, uniformed police at entrance, notice of random checks, and K-9 units.

Any security station with Walmart greeters with FUPAs is not a security station. Its not even for show.

Yeah, all this talk about metal detectors and schools is pretty retarded (no homo). Every entrance, one at a time, secondary wanding and physical searches - all because I forgot a Dude Wipe in my back pocket.

I'm pretty sure the technology is there for long corridors with better floor that show real time anomalies on a viewing station. If 6 Flags can have it, I'm sure airports, casinos, and government buildings do as well.

No they don't which is why the outside looks it's age, and inside not much better. If that thing is gonna last another decade, us and blowU are gonna have to divert some of our own facility improvement money to the Cotton Bowl. That may sound unrealistic, but no matter how much both fanbases want to keep the game on the fairgrounds..if that thing is condemned for safety reasons we wont have much choice...Jerrah is waiting in the wings licking his chops.

When Dallas let the Cowboys move from their own suburb to one of Fort Worth's (Arlington isnt in Dallas county) without putting up much of a fight, that signaled the city gives zero fucks about football. Dallas is now a Basketball town, and thats more Cuban than the city..wouldnt be surprised to see both the Mavs and Stars in Frisco/Plano at some point in the future. Dallas city hall has been disfunctional and corrupt for decades, don't see that changing any time soon.

Fuck are you talking about.  Jerry was secretly negotiating with Arlington and set a deadline then acted like Arlington swooped in at the last minute.  Dallas County was negotiating with Jerry, not the city.  They had a site, a transport plan and a funding mechanism.  Don't get on here and spread false shit.

Sorry, didn't realize we had someone from the early 2k's Dallas city council on the surl. You seem to be taking it personally..

Like the people who complained about nachos and $12 beer for lunch, I'd say plan your life better.

Actually, plan worked out pretty great. Fletcher's 830 am breakfast, followed by fresh cut Jack's French fries.

Then grabbed a drink, checked out some of the fair stuff, grabbed another snack. Headed into the stadium an hour before kickoff, hung out in the shade under and took care of business in the upstairs bathroom.

Yes, if you dont get there early enough to tank up beforehand, thats on you, not shitty Cotton Bowl concessions. Pro-tip..smuggle in at least one flask, buy a soda before the game starts so you'll have something to partially hydrate before emptying contents of said flask into the cup. Wear depends if piss troughs offend you..problem solved, no plays missed.

There's two issues here.  One was trying to keep the Cowboys in Dallas, which was the County and didn't involve the Cotton Bowl.

The other was trying to keep the Cotton Bowl Classic at the Cotton Bowl, and that was the City.

I don't want it moved either but believe it will be stuff like this that eventually gets it moved.  I don't even ever walk in there for a game with any illusions of buying any concessions.

Also another funny thing, at least at the gate down by Dos Equis that I went in you could have just claimed you were going to the game and walked right in the Fair.  They had a separate gate they were sending all "football game attendees" to where all you did was lift your hands and walk through the metal detector.  Nobody looked at shit.

Getting into the Cotton Bowl did take a bit longer than usual, but not an hour where I was.

Yeah I ain't going for the fucking concessions. I can and do eat & drink before and after. Fuck moving the game.

There has to be at least one Surly who had to take a Cotton Bowl shit. That would be the ultimate nightmare.

I've been probably to 95% of the games between ~1965 and 2006. I've dropped trow twice during that time:

once late 60s/very early 70s as a youngster.

once during my undergrad years. Don't recall exactly which year (early 80s).

When you gotta go, you gotta go. No fucks given.
