@Bozo_Casanova, you are 100% wrong about the GQP supporting ANY of those things.  You could agree to take AR-15 bans/regulation off the table, put an AR-15 in the middle of the American flag, require every school child to recite the 2nd Amendment every morning at school....and they STILL wouldn't agree to any of the meaningful regulations you suggest.

Just stop.

Stop thinking we live in a world where political compromise is still a thing.  You are living in a world that is a blend of memories of the past and a fantasy of a world that never was.

The future of gun regulations in this country is the following:

1) for a long time to come, we will be REMOVING regulations and restrictions on firearms (see the Bruen decision, see shitloads of recent legislation).  I am not exaggerating when I tell you that we are more likely to see a law REQUIRING gun ownership/possession in certain places than we are to see more restrictions.  This will go on, and get horrifically worse.

2) until there is some tipping point in the future.  Much longer from now than we'd like...but not nearly as long as some might think.  And when that tipping point is hit....it's over.  All of it.  Private gun ownership in the US will be more regulated than it is in places like Australia.  People who hold on to their ARs will end up in prison.

We live in an all-or-nothing world now.  When it comes to guns and regulations or legislation that could help with gun violence.....you'll get the NOTHING.  Until it breaks, and you get the ALL.  Neither of which is a good outcome.  But "shitty outcomes only" is our brand.  You know that.  Stop being naive and thinking you live in a different world.

Not sure if we've talked about the suicide component of guns on this thread or if it was another one.  But you raised a legit point.  We lose a lot of people, a disproportionate amount to suicide-by-gun in this country.  So much so it begs the question, why?  We have just many unhappy people as anywhere else.  We have way more drugs and tall buildings.  There are vast studies done that suggest that there'd be far less suicide if a quick and painless way, like a bullet through the brain, wasn't so readily available.  That long walk to the bridge gives one significant time to ponder and reflect.  Even swallowing a bottle of pills can give one time to vomit and call for help.  So while we want to wish away that 2% that die from mass shootings, we should also reflect upon the fact that we take our own lives with guns far, far more than any other country does too.  Because we don't treat addiction, don't treat mental health, and don't treat suicidal/homicidal red flags except that we offer them as much firepower as possible, with no money down.

And then your "safe storage" mention.  Why is it the country that prides itself on a well regulated militia.  That exercises its constitutional right.  That apparently has no issues with mass shootings or firearm suicide.  That prides itself, even sucks its own dick, over "Responsible Gun Ownership" and "Gun Safety" and "Trigger Discipline" keeps fucking shooting itself?  We have the means, the money, and the resources to properly secure our weapons.  And yet, one nation stands boldly apart from "shithole countries" and is singularly best at accidental shootings, child deaths by gun, un-secured weapons, stolen weapons, and mistaken discharges...the United States.  The one country charged with being well-armed and well-secured...we can't help but mistakenly have thousands upon thousands of accidental deaths because "responsible gun owners" do such a bang-up job of storing their guns.

We're fucking idiots.  Toddlers, even.  With stupidly easy access to stupid amounts of stupidly powerful weapons.

I forgot to mention the suicide angle in my previous post. I feel extremely bad for people who get to the point where suicide is the final decision that they make. My best friend in the world killed himself 4-5 years ago and I also had another close HS friend do the same not long after. It fucking sucks. But most suicide victims do not also take innocent victims with them. That's a HUGE component to this.

Every Tom Dick and Harry American can own an actual machine gun my man. They just have to pay for it (expensive) and go through the NFA process to do it, which takes 6-9 months, which is exactly the same as the process to get a can to make your .22lr plinker 24dbs less noisy.

one of those things is not on the list and should be. One of them is and shouldn’t. Tradeoffs could and should be made.

Let's not worry about taking the guns at all at this point. Let's start with just making it harder for people under the age of 25 to purchase high-powered killing machines. Increase the min age, institute mandatory waiting periods, do a deep dive on these people trying to purchase these weapons. Red flag laws. Track the weapons after they're purchased. When you give the gun to someone, or sell it, it needs to be documented. Get caught with an undocumented weapon, you receive a citation.

I knew a guy, through another guy, who would roll back analog odometers and fix the dash on the South Side of Chicago.  He got caught, along with his ring of accomplices, and was sentenced to 24 months in prison.  And because some of the cars ended up in Indiana and Wisconsin, it was a serious prison.  And he did every single day of that 24 months, and hard.  The week he got out, before anybody from parole or the courts even noticed his paperwork, he legally purchased multiple guns in Wisconsin.  A few days later, the crew he suspected of ratting him out were dead by his hand.  You can't touch a mailbox, an odometer, or an interstate highway sign without raising a dozen federal red flags.  But you sure as shit blow those flags away with an AR-15.

All the NICS checks that I have had recently conducted, as well as a form 4, have been through eForms transactions that are all digital. You're talking about going back and scanning all the old paper 4473s and that seems like a waste of time and money to me. The NICS system has numerous flaws that can and should be fixed, wasting energy scanning decades old pieces of paper seems like a distraction from more useful reforms.

I didn't hear about it until mid-2000's so I'm guessing late 90's/early 2000s.  It was through a guy I went to high school with who ran in some shady circles.  He and his dad ended up doing an unrelated stretch in federal prison for drug trafficking around the same time.  Google "most polish sounding name ever" and you'll see quite quickly who it was.

After your records hit a certain age, they are printed out and deleted off the database. It's designed to be extremely difficult and onerous to search. I agree there's not much progress to be made with fighting about paper records, but it's a strong point of evidence towards the depth and breadth of gun safety obstruction.

Hell, it even fails "unsafe" with allowing a purchase if the check takes too long to come back

90% of NICS queries clear within minutes. The majority of the remaining clear within the delay period, a small percentage fail to clear during the delay period.

NICS is not intended to be a registry, it is intended to facilitate a background check in a timely manner. To the extent that the right data are loaded into the system, it does that job reasonably well. Where there are gaps in data feeds, for example from mental health authorities, those gaps are particularly problematic. Lots of examples of data connection deficiencies. Those need to get fixed. Retention time for the records is a different matter. Seems that the retention time should be sufficient to facilitate prosecution of offenses related to lying on the form. Denied transactions are retained by ATF for 10 years, and then transferred to FBI for longer-term retention. The statute of limitation is 5 years for lying on a federal form.

If you want a registry, that is a different discussion, but that is not necessarily an indictment of the NICS functionality.

FWIW, i kind of agree.  A federal registry is not much more than a retroactive list of personal networks through which to send thoughts and prayers.  Just one notch about meaninglessness.  We have long, long lists of people who rape kids but only after their parish or relatives or parole officers finally coughed up the information.   I'd rather have their throats slit ahead of time.  We are an awfully reactive country for one that hurts itself patting itself on the back over greatness.

I think it's entirely reasonable to put the Clinton era bans back in place.  That helps solve one tragic aspect of gun ownership.  I also think it's entirely reasonable to enact better red flag laws and close private sale loopholes, which would also lead to incremental improvements.

We have four crises that firearms exponentially make worse…

Accidents/Suicides
Domestic Violence
Gang Violence
Terrorism (mass shootings due to political, quasi-political reasons)

These are all uniquely American problems and the reason why we (by far) lead developed nations in violence.

Again....you posting both of these statements is just baffling to me.

NOTHING IS POSSIBLE.  NOTHING.  ZERO.  ZILCH.  NOTHING WILL EVER HAPPEN AS LONG AS THE GQP HAS ANY POWER, INCLUDING THE SCOTUS.  How do you not fucking get that?  How do you not fucking realize that we live in world -- this world, the real one we live in, not the unicorns and fairies world of "compromise" you think might exist -- where there the chance of any compromise gun safety legislation is pegged at zero fucking degrees kelvin?

They.  Will.  Not.  Ever.  Allow. Any. Of. It.

Stop.  Stop thinking of the opposition as reasonable actors in any way, shape, or form.  They are a deranged cult, they allow for only deranged cultish behavior, and unless you trick them into something by making them think "yeah, that's the cultish thing to do," they will never do anything you like.

It's over.  The world we grew up in, where you could take rational positions and find bi-partisan agreement, is gone.  Blown away, burned to ashes, and the ashes have washed into the sea.  You know I'm right.  So, just focus on the only thing left: fight with everything you've got until your side wins.  That's the game that they decided must be played.  There's no opting out.  Play to win, or lose.  Those are your choices.

Shooting at New Hampshire Psychiatric Hospital Leaves ‘Multiple Victims’
State officials said that the assailant was dead and that the situation at the hospital had been “contained.”

A shooting at a state psychiatric hospital in Concord, N.H., on Friday afternoon left “multiple victims,” the New Hampshire State Police said.

The situation at the hospital had been “contained” as of Friday evening, and the assailant was dead, the New Hampshire Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management said on social media.

The department, which did not immediately respond to calls seeking comment, did not offer more details about the shooting. It was unclear how many victims there were or what their conditions were.

Col. Mark B. Hall, the director of the New Hampshire Department of Safety, said at a short news briefing that the shooter had been “contained to the front lobby” of the hospital and that “all patients are safe.”

He added that officials were investigating a “suspicious vehicle” that had been found, though he did not elaborate. Colonel Hall said that a more extensive news conference would be held later Friday evening.

New Hampshire Hospital says on its website that it treats people with mental illness.

The shooting came about three weeks after a gunman in Lewiston, Maine, fatally shot 18 people and injured 13 more in the country’s deadliest mass shooting of the year.

Now is not the time to debate mental health and firearms, America!

I mean, I went to church yesterday to pray and give thanks, as is the season.  But sorry folks, we live in a digital simulation.  That's the good news.  The bad news is there are no updates left and it's running out of fresh ideas.

After this week's attempted cage match duel on the Senate Floor and a mental health mass shooting at a mental health facility, I think all we need in 2024 is a mass shooting at a firearm's or ammo factory and we can pretty much assume the simulation is winding down and can wrap this whole thing up.  Of course, in the meantime, a bunch more kids and innocent people of color have to die first just to keep the gears rotating.  But that's a price we're willing to pay.  Maybe in the end, none of us are real and that's why this is so easy to digest.

Dayton suburb of Beavercreek last night. The report says the shooter had a rifle but all 4 victims are reported to be in the hospital, no deaths so far, so maybe he didn’t have an assault rifle. Shooter shot himself before police arrived.

Beavercreek Walmart mass shooting: 4 injured, gunman kills self, police say

A gunman around 8:35 p.m. entered the store at 3360 Pentagon Blvd. and began firing shots, he said.

“He injured four victims, who were all transported to area hospitals for treatment. The conditions of the victims is unknown,” he said.

The shooter died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, the captain said.

A CareFlight medical helicopter left around 9:50 p.m. for Miami Valley Hospital, and three other victims were taken to Soin Medical Center - Kettering Health in Beavercreek. The Greene County Coroner’s Office responded just before 10:30 p.m. to the scene.

An employee reported hearing at least two shots but did not see anyone hit.

“I thought it was glass at first. I heard a couple people running and screaming so I darted out and we got to the Burger King parking lot,” the worker said.

One witness described the shooter as a tall young white guy carrying a rifle who reportedly walked by her before he opened fire, she said in a video posted on X, formerly Twitter, that was recorded outside the store.

Wright State University students Anna Cowley and Kailie Conley said they watched and counted as between 30 and 40 cruisers with lights and sirens pulled up outside Walmart.

“We were grabbing a bite nearby,” Conley said. “We were like ‘What’s going on?’

“The parking lot was flooded (with police cars),” she said. “There was police dogs that were running in, a bunch of cops running in … It was a lot, especially with how many how cops did show up.”

Walmart is a place where Wright State students, including the two young women, shop frequently. Cowley had been at Walmart earlier in the day.

“This is crazy thinking that literally less than five minutes away is where we live and where we stay every day, and that could happen at any time to us. Like they could have went to campus and not a Walmart,” Cowley said.

They have no idea where he is now.

CUSTER COUNTY, Colo. (KKTV) - The search for a homicide suspect in southern Colorado is still underway Tuesday morning.

Around 1 p.m. Monday, the Custer County Sheriff’s Office received a call of a shooting at 173 Rocky Ridge Road, in a remote area eight miles northeast of Westcliffe, close to the Fremont County line. The first deputy arrived on the scene about 25 minutes later.

“The shooting happened in a wooded area. We entered kind of at a high risk and checked to see if there’s any survivors,” said Custer County Sheriff Rich Smith.

Before 9 pm. Monday, the Custer County Sheriff confirmed to 11 News three people were dead, including two men and a woman. A fourth person, a woman, was seriously injured and was airlifted to a Colorado Springs hospital. At the last update, that victim is expected to survive.

Spoiler

“It’s not something we normally see. The first thing I want to say... my thoughts are with the families of the victims,” said Smith.

This shooting was a suspected property dispute. Officials said the suspect and one of the victims were known to be involved in a previous civil dispute over property lines.

Deputies sent out a shelter-in-place alert for the Westcliffe area on social media Monday afternoon, describing the situation as “high-risk.” The alert has been cleared as of late Monday night.

A neighbor told 11 News he did not receive an alert on his phone. “They’re just telling me, hey, wait on. They won’t tell me what’s going on exactly. I’m just waiting to hear what happened and hope I can get home and see my family,” said resident Tate Parsons.

According to Custer County deputies, the suspect is 45-year-old Hanme Clark. The Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office gave a shelter in place order near the Salida-area in connection to this incident. That included the area south of Highway 50 from the Fremont County line to Poncha Springs. That order was lifted just before 10 a.m.

“After a vigilant search, by air and ground, the Sheriff’s Office feels that the homicide suspect has likely left the area,” a post by Chaffee County Communications reads. “Please remain alert, if you do see the vehicle please call 9-1-1 right away.”

“We have a very good idea on where the suspect and vehicle is. We are working with another law-enforcement agency to take them to custody,” said Smith.

The suspect, pictured below from the Custer County Sheriff’s Office, is described as 6′3″, 200 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes, possibly accompanied by a female with dark hair. Deputies say he is driving a white Ram 1500 pickup with a topper, Colorado license plate: BHLK27.
