Finally realized what this reminded me of.

It looks like one of those shirts you’d find at American Eagle or Aeropostal in the mid 2000s

As it does every year, SEC Media Days yielded a predicted order of finish for the conference as voted on by those credentialed reporters who are assembled in Atlanta for the event. While these are never polls that end up batting 1.000, sometimes they're pretty accurate— and sometimes, they're not.

Famously, the predicted order of finish in the conference had a decent streak of whiffing on the champion for several years in a row. While the predictability of Georgia's run helped remedy that somewhat, it was still a little shocking that, even during the Saban years, the media had such a tough time picking who would win the conference each season.

The Aggies come in at 8th on this poll, the final team in the top half of the conference. While it's obviously better to finish in the top half than the bottom half, I don't think this is a result that would cause A&M fans to be particularly pleased if it came to pass. Luckily, they'll have plenty of chances to prove the media wrong.

Texas A&M will have to outstrip media expectations to have successful year in SEC
You can view the entire poll below:

Something that's not displayed on this graphic, but something that is really head-scratching, is the number of first-place votes that each team received. Every team above the Aggies received a first-place vote, as did Tennessee, OU, Auburn, and Vanderbilt— but the Ags received zero.

For a team that controlled their own destiny in the middle of last year, and one that— by all accounts— should be markedly better in 2025, this doesn't make much sense. It testifies to just how slept-on the Aggies are in the conference this year, which is something that they'll have to undo by simply notching wins.

Looking at this poll, for this to be the correct order of finish, A&M would most likely have to lose to both South Carolina and Florida as well as Texas and LSU. While those two latter games will be tough road contests, it would be disappointing to finish a relatively light home slate with two losses in Kyle.

I can't help but feel that this would mean a five-loss regular season, which would in all likelihood mean a regression from last year's team. Given the amount of experience returning, I don't find that to be a scenario that is very plausible outside of major injury.

We'll have to see— and the real test will be week three against Notre Dame— but I'm bullish on a prospective year-two jump under Mike Elko. If that happens, there will be a lot of media eating crow about this poll in particular.

I think he intentionally refuses to look at their roster of bread because he knows how below average that team is.

UTSA - W (not a blowout)

Utah State - W (pathetic)

ND- L

Auburn - L (Barn has better WR's)

Miss St - W

UF - L (If Lagway is good to go, aggies are fucked)

Arky - W

LSU - L

Mizzou - toss-up

USCe- L

Stamford - W (lol, Jesus Christ)

Texas - L

If they beat Mizzou they'll go 7-6, which is who they are. Reed is meh. Their WR's are meh. We'll see how Moss' knee is, and Owens sucks. Their O-line should be pretty good. Their defense is lead by probably the most overrated LB in a short, fat Taurean York.

No updates on how A&M is lapping Texas on the recruiting trail?  That's weird.

Aggy is lapping us the same way a handful of our gap vag fans said Tech and Baylor were doing better recruiting-wise than we were due to a couple H2H wins via some outrageous bags.

Well, he was crowing about the recruiting rankings a week or so ago, but those rankings have now flipped because of our last 3 commitments.  I was sure Graham would provide an update.  I sure hope he's doing OK.

I would not be so sure that they lose to Auburn. At SEC media days, Freeze talked about making the defense lighten up in spring practices so that Jackson Arnold could keep his confidence up. As an Auburn fan I would lose my shit. That is Florida State level implosion if true.

This was discussed on the SEC channel of SXM.  They too were perplexed about that statement.  Im sure his DC is fiiiiine with it.

there are several games they have already LOCKED as wins such as pig @ pig

they haven't been there in 12 years and have won the last 2 in arkansas

however......

in little rock they are 3-9

in fayettenam they are 7-12-2

all-time in the state of pig they are 10-21-2

for comparison their record in red stick is 10-27-1

if pig are at all improved

and if this is a night game

Wow. That's pathetic. Coddling a QB that you shelled out who knows what for just to keep his spirits up. Good god.

see below

UTSA - W (not a blowout) - agree W

Utah State - W (pathetic) - agree W

ND- L - agree L

Auburn - L (Barn has better WR's) - disagree - W

Miss St - W - agree W

so they are 4-1 on morning of oct 11

UF - L (If Lagway is good to go, aggies are fucked) - agree - and this game is at home - it's the must-win to right the ship after the domer loss - and if they can't get it done they are losing the next 2 on the road - agree L

AT Arky - W - disagree - see my post above - disagree - L

AT LSU - L - agree L

i've got them at 4-4 at the end of october

Mizzou - toss-up - agree until we see what mizzou is this year - ?

USCe- L - disagree - this is a homegame and aggy may need it for bowl eligibility if they are on a 4-game losing streak - W

Stamford - W (lol, Jesus Christ) - pathetic - W

Texas - L

If they beat Mizzou they'll go 7-6, - agree - at the end of the day we both have the same 7-6 finish with a win in columbia, if not 6-7, either way texas bowl eligible

+++

how can elk turn the corner and change their stars?

he's going to have to beat domer or florida

AND

lsu or pig

and

hold serve on the rest (including mizzou)

that's 9-4 and they can actually get out of firefighting mode and give elk time to build

8-5 with going 1-3 in the key games won't cut it and the elk cycle will already have crested

elk has to get a signature win and improve by 1 win to feed the hive mind requirement that progress is underway

sark:

5-7

8-5

12-2

13-3

Is he, though? He has Marcel Reed throwing to him, which is why I factored that in. I guess he could break out, but until Reed shows he can throw a forward pass, I'm skeptical.

You guys are over thinking it.   They lose to ND, lose to either Florida or LSU (probably LSU because away), and lose one of Mizz or south carolina, then to Texas.    8-4 with one of the wins being Div 2.

They will be about 5 plays away from the playoffs and along with a top 10 recruiting class, they will be ready to make their run in 2026 when Texas is in Kyle.

This isn't hard.

Meh.  If you omit the game against FCS competition (WCU - 9 rec, 121 yds, 3 TDs), his stats last year were average as fuck (44 rec, 339 yds, 3 TDS).

I just...I mean they lost to Auburn with Peyton Thorne, who, if you can actually believe it, is worse than Jackson Arnold.

Plus I forgot to mention I was also factoring the W for Auburn with their defense, which is superior to aggies.

But Hugh Freeze, when he can't drop bags is Napier at a poor program. I think the aggie o-line will be good, but it's also overrated. If Moss is good to go he's a solid back, but he's all they have in the back field. Owens is pure trash.

If Lagway is starting,he's going to cook their defense. If he's out, aggies have a good shot at winning. Lagway is the factor here. He'll either drag his nuts over their chin or he'll be nursing his shoulder, which I hope he's healthy (not just to beat the morons on the brazos, but to see him live up to the hype).

Reed's not as much of a problem as their mysterious o-line which should be good but is continuously shitty.

I love how A&M is so excited about this line of all the same players when we caved them in all game. They point to a lack of passing game, but we just mangled them in the run game.

Is UTSA projected to be substantially better than last year?   I can see them giving aggy fits if they get back to form like they were in 2022 and 23.

I hope so since they have more upperclassmen, I believe. Plus first game of the season, and they aren't playing Texas. Aggies have some talent, but not enough to put a beating on UTSA, imo. Taylor is a damn good coach. It may be a slog of a game, tho.
