1883

Isabel May is good actress. Run Hide Fight was not a bad movie. Die Hard meets a school shooting. She looks like a young Faith Hill.

Tim McGraw can handle himself in the action sequences. We’ll see on Faith Hill.

Sam Elliott’s excellence continues. I wouldn’t try to make a Western without him.

Watching Ep. 2 (my first) w/ the wife, who loves it.  15 mins. in it's a little slow like 90% of TV series, but the acting is good, cinematography is nice, and we'll see, fully expect it to be good.

Might be the first series in awhile I get beyond 2 episodes before giving up (then I suppose I'll have to catch up on Yellowstone, as this is apparently a prequel).

The current season of Yellowstone is a steaming pile of shit. The first three are pretty entertaining, though.

Not to Yellowstone the 1883 thread, but there's actually a valid explanation for this. I can't go into details on here, but let's just say this is a transition/rebuilding season. Expect it to get better next season.

Appreciated. I saw about 2 episodes from about season 2 and it was pretty good; acting and plot.

In both of these series, I'm meh on Old West type of shit (nothing will ever, ever replace the Leone triptik in my opinion) and it's hard to avoid tired stereotypes (even in these) but the acting, props and cinematography can go a long way (I mean if you can't film beautiful landscapes out west, you suck as a camera specialist).

I did catch Ep. 1 of 1883 last night after the missus went to bed, and it was pretty engaging. BBT was about as good as he's ever been in a western.  His "revenge shooting" (nospoiler) scene and especially his last line after it was giggly epically good.

I'll stick with 1883 for now, it's about a B+ to me, plenty good enough to keep going.

Taylor Sheridan is a pretty legit horseman in real life, so he actually does a pretty good job at avoiding a lot of the tired stereotypes. But yeah, even he has to include some to appeal to the masses.

My favorite thing in the series so far besides what I listed above is Tim McGraw.  I said to wife, "you know what I like about Tim McGraw in this series?" and she shot right back - "he doesn't overact?"  Exactly what I had in mind.  He does a brilliant job of "man of few words" without being the moody, aloof quasi-hero stereotype (thanks a lot, Clint!).  He seems human and even a bit unsure of his plans but presses on - very realistic Old West (I studied it), and his role is played magnificently.  If he doesn't scoop up some brass for this role, it'd be a shame.  He's unbelievably good.  Elliott is always great but I wish his role wasn't so manic depressive, however it's not unrealistic because obviously he's had tragedy (like oh, about 96% of people in the "real" Old West).  But I'll allow it.  Isabel May is up and down (although some of the plot events written for her are kinda cheesy), and of course everyone you've ever seen in Old West photos are ugly and dirty, so unfortunately she and Faith Hill can't help but being hotties, but wife and I both said that through no fault of their own, they seem hard to grasp... but yeah, Hollywood and appeal and all...

Anyway, it's pretty good.  Hope it doesn't Fonzie the Shark out of appeal, but seems like they have a lot of big guns working on it, so there's hope!

only watched one ep tonight...but already better than Yellowstone. wagon train setup is a good storyline. also, Sam Elliott.

Not a popular comment but Sam Elliot got the look and voice for sure but he’s just being same character as everything else he’s ever done before.

I enjoyed the first episode, and like Yellowstone, I am thru to the end now even if the writing goes awry.

One immediate question though.  Why are two "Pinkerton" men leading a wagon train?  That is not part of their charter.

good question...

as an aside, i literally cannot see anything with or any reference to Pinkertons without automatically hearing a voice in my head every time...

"...besides, Jesse pays more money than you do, Mr. Pinkerton man."

from my favorite western, pos rep to who can name that movie 😊

I agree.

I agree it's an unpopular comment.  Sam Elliot is a goddamn national treasure, you Communist.

one nitpick from the show is the preference for horses over oxen to pull the wagons.

in real life on the Oregon Trail oxen were greatly preferred. not sure why they changed it here unless nobody in Hollywood knows how to wrangle oxen?

There was a scene in Ep. 1 where Sam Elliott was chastising the Germans for wanting oxen instead of horses and that "oxes [sic] will never make it."
In reality, horses almost never pulled wagons as you said.  Oxen were more durable, grazed easier on the natural grasses of the plains (horses required grains as well, heavy and relatively expensive), you could use oxen to pull plows once you got there, and Indians were more likely to steal horses and leave the oxen alone.  Plus oxen were a lot cheaper, stronger, and you could eat 'em at their end.

Not sure if there is some unique reason for that screenwriting, but normally that would be bogus.  But Brennan's reasons in that little scene were completely wrong per the usual requirements, especially where he said that oxen couldn't make it (but horses could?).  Oxen were much stronger and tougher.  Only reason I could think was that horses were faster and could get there sooner - if it was a shorter distance.  But they don't really know when they're going to stop, so that's out.

Recently rewatched the miniseries Centennial and they had the same scene regarding Oxen and going over the mountains to Oregon.  Looks like Sheridan just likes to steal shit from old movies and shows.

Yep

Oxen > Mules > Horses

There is nothing "mini" about Centennial - it was damn near 24 hours long.

Centennial was an amazing production for its era.  That cast alone...

Isabel May reminds me of Jennifer Lawrence, maybe a little Rosamund Pike. Her southern accent is trash though, awful choice for narrator.
Tim McGraw is surprisingly good so far.  Liking this better than the shit Yellowstone is boring me with.

Isabel is quite attractive. Got a little Florence Pugh thing going too.

Faith Hill looks weird.
