I'm taking off work Thursday and Friday next week.  Over about the last 6 or 7 years, TX HS football Championship Week has passed the opening two rounds of NCAA basketball tournament as my favorite extended weekend in TV sports watching every year.  Absolutely love it, no matter who wins.

It’s the most under rated sports weekend in the US

What’s the scouting report on College Station?

The tea I have from friend in the area is that they're alright. Had a really good RB go down before the season but had a kid transfer in during the summer that has filled his shoes and is young so provided he doesn't get injured will likely be their go to guy for awhile. QB has improved quite a bit. Defense is solid enough. Coach was moved up when the OG coach left to coach at Decatur and didn't take all the staff so not a big change for the team. Some butthurt in the community as CS is the 'new' school and the older hs just had their coach (Fedora?) resign. Don't know the story on that. Keep in mind it's a band parent so have no clue if anything I said is just the usual bland sports fodder but I suspect it is.

As a resident of the Corpus Christi area, I am quite familiar with Mr. Davis, Esq.  He has an office in Corpus and is all over the airwaves here.  So I think I see where y'all were going with this.

Maybe for Westlake “cakewalk” was a stretch. No one in their right mind would’ve picked Desoto or Vandy today.

I have a friend that would’ve picked DeSoto had I talked to him before the game. We just got done talking about his alma mater going for a possible back-to-back a few minutes ago. He said of the three losses SOC had to begin the year that the one that was completely lopsided was playing DeSoto.

There's also a Louisiana version who is the official injury lawyer of LSU.  Not sure who had call the 4s first.  I first became aware of him when I overheard two gentlemen discussing a car accident on a New Orleans streetcar and one of them said "I would have called fo fo fo fo if that happened to me."

I have the sneaking suspicion that in every area code there is a lawyer who has a phone number of all the same digit for every digit 2 through 9.

TreatyOak here. Sorry about my little breakdown/misunderstanding on Saturday. I'm doing much better now and everything is really positive. I'm very sorry about my very minor dustup w the First Responders, and I hope they are feeling better cause I really support them 100%.

I can't disclose my current location and I have to keep this short so my IP address can't be traced. I am heading to AT&T Stadium to cheer for the Chaps in the State Championship this weekend. We're going for 4 in a row, baby! Feeling much better and everything is good.

DMN has a long article about future realignment, and pretty much every coach they interviewed has stated that they think the UIL will add a 7A soon, which won't actually fix the "Allen Problem."  Aledo's coach suggested adding an 8A, which is basically what Oklahoma and Arkansas do, where only the largest 16 schools are in the top class, and 12 make the playoffs.

Here's DMN's 8A with the largest 32 programs:

All the Plano schools have 5000+ kids and are terrible at football. Allen isnt some unbeatable juggernaut either anymore, they had a good run. Their 2013 team had 6 NFL players that they recruited to Allen. The Odessa schools have 4500- mediocre. Conroe has 5000 kids. After about 3000 it doesnt matter

One thing I think is cool about the North Texas area is people have the choice to live in Allen and send their kids to a giant school with first class amenities or in Frisco and send their kids to one of about a dozen still pretty big less first class schools. And people that dont live in Allen dont get to tell Allen parents what kinda school to send their kids to.

My heart really isn't in this one -- I like the regional finals and state semis better than championship week.  I'm going up for Friday's games, but am going to McKinney Saturday for the NCAA D2 championship game.  I will say that if you've never gone to Jerryworld for the whole weekend, you are missing out, because it's an incredible scene.  Pro tip: But the refillable popcorn bucket; it's something like $15, but they refill it for free, and you can bring it back in every day.  It's about the only way to eat affordably for 3 days in that place.    I'm also posting this incredible preview from the DMN because if I wrote a preview it would heavily plagiarize this:

Quote

Here are 20 players to watch in this week’s UIL state championship football games at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.

Class 6A Division I
Caden Durham, Duncanville RB: The four-star junior has run for 1,858 yards and is the only player in the Dallas area to rush for more than 1,800 yards on fewer than 190 carries. Durham averages 10.0 yards per carry and has 33 rushing touchdowns, including three in a 41-0 rout of Prosper in the state semifinals. He averages a touchdown once every 5.6 carries. Durham is ranked as the 18th-best running back in the nation in the Class of 2024. He lists 18 college offers, and half of those have come since late July, as schools such as Alabama, TCU and LSU have joined the recruiting frenzy. He is looking to add a football state championship to the state title he won as part of Duncanville’s 4x100-meter relay team last track season.

Colin Simmons, Duncanville DL: The five-star junior is ranked by 247Sports as the No. 1 edge rusher in the nation and the No. 1 overall recruit in Texas in the Class of 2024. He lists 43 college offers, including Michigan, TCU, Ohio State, Alabama, Tennessee, USC, LSU, Kansas State, Texas and Texas A&M. With Simmons leading the way, Duncanville ranks No. 1 in the area in total defense (168.7 yards per game), run defense (66.3 yards per game) and scoring defense (9.6 points per game) among 6A teams. Duncanville shut out Prosper 41-0 in the state semifinals, allowing 132 total yards and just 14 rushing yards.

David Amador, Galena Park North Shore QB: The UT-San Antonio pledge caught the game-winning 39-yard touchdown pass from Kaleb Bailey with 2:53 left in last year’s 17-10 win over Duncanville in the Class 6A Division I state championship game. But Amador, a three-star wide receiver, is now playing quarterback because Bailey went down with a leg injury in the fifth game of the season. Amador ran for 120 yards and a touchdown in Saturday’s 49-34 win over Austin Westlake, the nation’s ninth-ranked team that had won three straight state titles (two in Division II) and 54 consecutive games. The week before that, in his first start at quarterback since Week 9, Amador ran for 159 yards and a touchdown in a 38-7 win over state-ranked Humble Atascocita.

Jayven Anderson, Galena Park North Shore DB/LB: The three-star recruit had the game-clinching interception in last year’s state championship game as North Shore won its fifth state championship — and fourth in the last seven years. Anderson lists offers from the likes of Texas, SMU, Arkansas, Ole Miss, Indiana and Purdue.

Class 6A Division II

Johntay Cook II, DeSoto WR: The four-star Texas pledge has had the best season of his brilliant high school career, catching 80 passes for 1,368 yards and 21 touchdowns. That includes 22 catches for 457 yards and five touchdowns in five playoff games. After Saturday’s 47-28 win over Denton Guyer — the nation’s 10th-ranked team — DeSoto has a chance to win its first state title since 2016.

DJ Bailey, DeSoto QB: In his first year as DeSoto’s starter, the junior has thrown for 3,536 yards and 42 touchdowns, with only two interceptions. Bailey might become an even bigger factor if 1,100-yard running back Deondrae Riden isn’t at full strength in the state championship game. Riden ran for 224 yards and two touchdowns against Guyer before getting injured, and coach Claude Mathis wouldn’t comment Sunday on Riden’s status for the state final. Riden said Monday, “I will be playing.” DeSoto has two other capable options at running back in Jaden Trawick (721 yards, 11 touchdowns) and Texas pledge Tre Wisner (720 yards, seven touchdowns).

Brayden Buchanan, Austin Vandegrift QB: The Baylor baseball signee threw for 453 yards and two touchdowns in Saturday’s 38-35 win over nine-time state champion Katy as Vandegrift advanced to a state championship game for the first time. He has thrown for 3,292 yards and 29 touchdowns and has also run for eight scores. He is protected by an offensive line that is anchored by four-star Clemson pledge Ian Reed. Buchanan’s favorite target has been Miles Coleman, who has 95 receptions for 1,678 yards and 13 touchdowns.

 Class 5A Division I

Jaden Allen, Aledo DB: The four-star Texas pledge is rated the 17th-best cornerback in the nation in the Class of 2024. He has three interceptions and nine pass breakups for an Aledo team that is trying to win its 11th state title. Allen held Alabama pledge Jalen Hale, an Under Armour All-American, to two receptions in the second half in Aledo’s 17-14 state semifinal win over Longview, the No. 1 5A Division I team in the state.

Hawk Patrick-Daniels, Aledo RB: He moved from defensive back to running back early in the season and has rushed for 1,344 yards and 21 touchdowns. Patrick-Daniels ran for 111 yards and a touchdown in Saturday’s win over Longview, and he ran for 129 yards against nationally ranked Denton Guyer in Week 2. Aledo has won nine of its 10 state titles in the past 13 years.

Aydan Martinez-Brown, College Station RB: The sophomore has rushed for 2,060 yards and 22 touchdowns and also has four receiving scores. He ran for 151 yards and scored three touchdowns in a 33-7 win over Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial in the state semifinals. College Station will be playing in a state championship game for the second straight year after losing 27-24 in overtime to Katy Paetow last year. College Station will be trying to win its first state title since 2017, when it beat Aledo 20-19 in the championship game.

Class 5A Division II

Malik Muhammad, South Oak Cliff CB: The four-star Texas pledge is an Under Armour All-American who is trying to help South Oak Cliff win its second straight Class 5A Division II state championship. South Oak Cliff has allowed fewer than 100 yards passing in nine of its 15 games, including holding a high-powered Melissa offense to 3 of 15 passing for 28 yards in the regional final.

Jayvon Thomas, South Oak Cliff RB: The four-star Texas A&M pledge is ranked as the 11th-best cornerback in the nation in the Class of 2023 but has been playing running back in the playoffs. He ran for 217 yards and two touchdowns on just 11 carries against Midlothian Heritage in the regional semifinals, and he ran for 57 yards and a touchdown on seven carries in a 14-6 win over state No. 1-ranked Argyle in the state semifinals. South Oak Cliff has two 1,000-yard rushers — Danny Green and Tedrick Williams — but Thomas has been the big-play threat and is averaging 12.5 yards per carry.

Isaiah Nguyen, Port Neches-Groves RB: The junior ran for 411 yards the last two weeks as Port Neches-Groves beat Fort Bend Marshall and Liberty Hill, which finished the regular season ranked No. 2 and No. 3 in the state. That included a 264-yard effort in a 42-14 state semifinal win over Liberty Hill, the team that South Oak Cliff beat in last year’s state final. Port Neches-Groves will be playing in its first state championship game since 1999 and will be trying to win its first state title since 1975.

Class 4A Division I
Cash McCollum, China Spring QB: He has thrown for 2,845 yards and 33 touchdowns after transferring to China Spring from Wimberley. McCollum is a finalist for the Mr. Texas Football Player of the Year, an award that China Spring quarterback Major Bowden won last year while leading his team to the 4A Division II state title.

Class 4A Division II
Connor Cuff, Carthage QB: The Louisiana-Lafayette baseball pledge is trying to lead Carthage to its ninth state title and its fifth state title in seven years. He threw for 297 yards and three touchdowns in a 42-35 win over Glen Rose in the state semifinals.

Class 3A Division I
Bryson Washington, Franklin RB/DB: The Baylor pledge has led Franklin to its third consecutive state championship game and will be trying to help his team win its second straight state title. He kept Franklin’s season alive by scoring the winning touchdown on a 7-yard run on fourth down with 27 seconds left in a 24-21 win over Columbus in the regional final, then ran for 179 yards in a 41-13 win over Edna in the Class 3A Division I state semifinals. He surpassed 2,000 yards for the season as Franklin (15-0) extended its winning streak to 31 games. Washington ran for 165 yards and three touchdowns in a 49-35 win over Gunter in last year’s 3A Division II state final.

Class 3A Division II
Walker Overman, Gunter QB: He was the backup at Melissa last year before transferring to a Gunter program that won state titles in 2016 and 2019 and was the Class 3A Division II state runner-up last season. He was one of the heroes of a 21-20 win over Canadian in the state semifinals, throwing a game-winning 10-yard touchdown pass to Ivy Hellman with 17 seconds left to cap an 81-yard drive.

Class 2A Division I
Austin Cumpton, Hawley RB/LB: The senior has run for 2,016 yards and 40 touchdowns, and he has 100 or more yards in 13 of Hawley’s 15 games. He missed Hawley’s 47-12 loss to Shiner in last year’s 2A Division I state championship game because he had two fractured vertebrae in his back. The Abilene Reporter News reported that he suffered that injury on Hawley’s first drive in the regional semifinals and then played the rest of that game and ran for 109 yards and two touchdowns. Cumpton entered the state semifinals with 100 tackles, 16 tackles for loss and four interceptions.

Ernest Campbell, Refugio WR: The three-star junior has offers from TCU, Penn State, Oregon and Baylor, among others. He ran for 128 yards and a touchdown and had three catches for 53 yards and a touchdown in a 24-21 win over Timpson in the 2A Division I state semifinals, giving Refugio a chance to win its sixth state championship. Campbell was the 2A state champion in the 100 meters in track, running a wind-aided 10.32, and he helped Refugio win state titles in the 4x100 and 4x200 relays.

Class 2A Division II
Jonah Ross, Mart QB/S: After playing mostly wide receiver on offense last year, Ross took over as the starting quarterback as a junior and has thrown for 2,423 yards and 36 touchdowns and run for 1,009 yards and 21 touchdowns. He also has 86 tackles, 11 tackles for loss and five interceptions for a 15-0 Class 2A Division II team that is trying to win its ninth state title — and fourth in the last six years.

Here are my picks for the games, ordered from most confident (#1) to least confident (#10):

1.  Aledo over College Station  The real 5AD1 championship was last weekend, when Aledo beat Longview.  I hate to do this to CS, because they have been so unbelievably resilient all season but expecting them to beat Aledo in Jerryworld is a bit much.

2.  SOC over PNG   This will at least be fun because of the crowd.  PNG will bring 20K+, and there will be a huge SOC home crowd.  SOC has been very up and down in these playoffs (I think I've picked them to lose twice), but they have just done what it takes to win.  Their offense flat-out sucks, but their defense is other-worldly with talent.  It will probably be a really ugly game, but that's exactly how SOC likes it.

3.  Gunter over Poth   Another one where the two best teams in the bracket played last week.  The numbers say that these are two of the best teams in the state on defense, with 137 points allowed by Poth and only 104 by Gunter.   Poth is 63-10 the last 6 years, so they're not chumps in this matchup, but Gunter is 83-6 over the past 7 years.

4.  Albany-Mart  As usual, Mart shows up to Jerryworld having put up video game numbers: 855-96 PF-PA.  Their closest playoff game was 41-14 last week.  The only reason this game is not at the very top of this list is Albany coach Denney Faith, who has won 334 games in 37 (!) years in Albany.  But Albany does not have the athletes to hang with Mart.

5.  Desoto over Vandegrift  Desoto looked like the best team in the state last week, manhandling Guyer 42-28.  Vandy shocked Katy, so they won't be awed by the Eagles, but Desoto just simply had lines on both sides of the ball that were big, mean, athletic and dominant.  As good as Vandy's QB is, they won't be able to handle that.

6.  Carthage over Wimberley   This would have been higher on the list before Glen Rose exposed Carthage's mortality last week.  Carthage got out to a 28-14 lead before they got fumble-itis and let GR back in the game, and actually needed a late GR unforced fumble to set up a win.  Wimbo is about as overlooked an undefeated team as there is in the state -- having your starting QB transfer in July and be replaced by a soph who was scheduled to play WR isn't usually a recipe for success, but the Texan coaching staff turned Cade Stoever into a dual-threat star, and they pulled an upset over huge rival Cuero last week.   This actually reminds me a lot of Wimberley's last Jerryworld appearance in 2019, when they faced an unbeatable Pleasant Grove team and had it a 1-score game in the 4th quarter before losing 35-21.

7.  Hawley over Refugio   Hawley made it to this game in 2021, which I think is a huge advantage.  Their best player missed that game with a broken back, but he's here this season.  Refugio has been massively successful under Jason Herring, but when they don't have success, it's usually because a team hits them in the mouth and doesn't back down, which causes Refugio to play undisciplined.  I think Hawley is exactly the type of team to do that.

8.  Franklin over Brock  I seriously don't think it can be mentioned enough that Brock started the season with games against Hirschi, Pleasant Grove, Wimberley, and Gunter.  They of course went 0-4, but got toughened up and haven't lost since.  That toughness showed against Malakoff last week, who shockingly just got physically dominated by Brock on both sides of the ball.  Brock likes to throw, but once they got a lead, they spent the second half just running the ball down the Tigers' throats.  The bad news is that no one is as physical as Franklin, who just Wing-T's opponents into dust.  This is a GREAT matchup and should be really fun.

9.  China Spring over Boerne  I'm leaning towards CS because they're the defending champs, they played an incredibly tough schedule, they have no weaknesses, and they've played with bullseyes on their backs all season.  But Boerne the last two weeks might be the most impressive team in the state -- a 30-point win over Calallen and a 35-0 pasting of Chapel Hill?  Yowza.  Boerne's lines are really big and that should give the Cougars lots of trouble.  This should be an incredible game.

10.   Duncanville over NS  Part of me thinks that if any coach can lose 4 state championship games to one team, it's Reggie Samples, but part of me thinks the 4th time is the charm.  I also think the DFW area is way better than the rest of the state this year for whatever reason.  But this one will be a literal slugfest as both teams are loaded with big fast strong athletes.  I think it sets a new attendance record, too.

Agree with all except

PNG over SOC….That lack of offense finally catches them

Boerne over China Springs.   Very impressed how they took it to my Cats a couple of weeks ago and dismantled what was supposedly to be a more athletic (but very underwhelming IMO)  Chap Hill team last week.  Boerne High has one shot to get it because next year they lose most of the big boys on both sides of the line.   And I think the Champion parents,  alums  and the Fair Oaks crowd are going  to demand the attendance zones be enforced and Boerne actually count the students who are taking AP classes at Champion , but are registered at Boerne High as part of Boerne High’s UIL snapshot  instead of Champions which would easily put them in 5A in 2024.  This is what I’ve been told has helped the rise at Boerne High across their programs while Champion’s have taken a step back.

Helo Redemption week:

6AD1: NS beats Duncanville. Fully believe in Amador the Matador

6AD2: Desoto beats Vandy. Too explosive on offense.

5AD1: Aledo beats CS, cause they’re Aledo.

5AD2: PNG beats SOC like 14-7. SOC turnovers doom them. Also seems unwise to pick against a team with a Vietnamese running back.

4AD1: Boerne beats China spring. Greyhound destiny

4AD2: Carthage beats Wimberley, because they’re Carthage

3AD1: Brock beats Franklin in an upset.

3AD2: Poth beats Gunter, region 4 rise up

2AD1: Refugio beats Hawthorne, south Texas power baby

2AD2: Mart beats Albany. I’ve heard of Mart before

1AD1: Abbott beats Westbrook. I have never heard of these towns/schools in my life

1AD2: Loraine beats Benjamin. I have never heard of these towns/schools in my life.

Anyone know where I can bet on TXHSFB? Fading every one of these picks

Willie Fucking Nelson is from Abbott, dimwit.

I thought he was from Austin. Is this a safe space for me to say that I’m not a fan of his music and never cared enough to learn anything about him?

Quick wikipedia shows he even played football for Abbott high back in the day. Neato.

Confession: I think this 6-man football is shite.  But I still subscribed to ballysports streaming this morning and am watching.

Benjamin 24 Loraine 14, 2Q

These two teams already played this season -- Benjamin won 61-30, their only win on the season that wasn't a mercy rule.

Benjamin is SW of Wichita Falls.  Loraine is on I-20 west of Sweetwater.

BTW, DCTF put together these cool little info-filled graphics:
